As inauguration day approaches, President Bush is preparing to leave the White House, his home of <strike>far too long</strike> 8 years.

Earlier this morning, Mr. President held his final press conference as our Commander- In- Chief and I’m sure he has been reminiscing his time of service to our great country.

I wonder, though, what W.’s most memorable, thrilling moment was during his 8-year-reign <strike>of terror .</strike>

Could it be learning that our nation was under attack when the towers were hit on 9\11? No.

Maybe it was the rush of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina? Wrong.

Could it be that journalist chucking a shoe at him during a press conference? Uh uh.

Our President says that during his time in office he has never felt more anxious than he did when he…wait for it…threw the opening pitch at the 2001 World Series. At least this was his response when People Magazine asked him.

Now I know that Mr. President has be scrutinized almost from the moment he stepped into office – and I won’t lie, I’ve been one to cast a stone or two – but I always felt that the President of the mighty United States absolutely deserves some amount of respect. I mean, the man is running a country. He did the best he could in a sh*tty situation…I guess.

But, come on. Of everything our country has been through during the past 8 years – the war, the natural disasters, the economy, etc. – this man’s most memorable part was pitching a freakin ball? I’m not saying the man should have said “Starting the war was my most favorite part of being president!” but I was hoping that maybe, just maybe, his favorite part would something a little more meaningful. Then again, did he do anything meaningful?

Point to ponder.

In one final attempt to piss off Democrats everywhere, the Bush administration “is quietly cutting off birth control supplies” to poor women in Africa. According to an Op Ed piece in the New York Times, Bush and his pals threw a bone to Pro-Lifers under the guise of disapproving China’s family-planning program (a program that enforces a sometimes ruthless one-child-per-household law)

“U.S. Agency for International Development ordered six African countries to ensure that no U.S.-financed condoms, birth control pills, I.U.D.’s or other contraceptives are furnished to Marie Stopes International, a British-based aid group that operates clinics in poor countries.

The Bush administration says it took this action because Marie Stopes International works with the U.N. Population Fund in China. President Bush has cut all financing for the population fund on the — false — basis that it supports China’s family-planning program.”

Because of this birth control supply ban, Marie Stopes International estimates that “the result will be at least 157,000 additional unwanted pregnancies per year [in Africa], leading to 62,000 additional abortions and 660 women dying in childbirth.”

Whether MSI’s estimates are overestimated or not, the real issue is how the Bush administration, and many pro-life activists, believe that taking away a woman’s right to choose birth control and abortion somehow benefits her.

You take away sex education and a woman’s right to choose when and how to have a baby, you take away her basic freedom as a human being. Period.

Tonight is the 2nd Presidential Debate, which is sure to be awesome (even if it’s not nearly as hyped as Palin vs. Biden’s Teeth).

The event is going to be moderated by NBC’s Tom Brokaw, but instead of Tommy asking the questions, the debate will have a town hall format.

Which means the people get to ask the questions.

So, people of Nashville who will be sitting pretty in the town hall-y debate, if you are reading this, we have a few questions we’d like to ask the candidates. Real questions that require real answers instead of that fluff Gwen Ifill came up with (and Sarah Palin dodged) during the VP “debate.”

1. Honestly, do you think President Bush was qualified to run this country? If not, how does that make you feel now? How badly would you hate yourself if you lost?

2. Inquiring minds want to know: Peanut Butter Crunch or Crunch Berries?

3. If you could only change one thing during your term as President (and money was not an issue), what would it be?

4. When SNL makes fun of you, does it hurt?

5. Barack, do you really eat 4-6 eggs a day, or are you a p*ssy who only eats the whites?

6. Tell us, McCain, what have you learned from living through the Civil War, WW1, WW2, Vietnam and the current Iraq sitch?

7. Would you rather have George Bush walk in on you having sex, or walk in on he and Laura doin’ the naughty dance?

8. What would you do to Osama Bin Laden if you had him in your office right now (and no one was watching)?

9. Would you eat PB slices?

10. Do you really like holding babies/shaking people’s hands/hugging creepy strangers, or is it all an act?

11. You both claim to want to fix the current Global Warming problem, yet you both tool around this country on airplanes/in giant buses. How can you justify that?

12. Is there any money left in either of your budgets to help Amy Winehouse?

We’ve been scoping the Internet this morning so we could post a story that isn’t about how Congress is completely divided, or how our economy is set to implode, or how no can find a freaking job…but we just haven’t been able to find anything. At least not at 9:45 AM.

So yeah. At the moment, the world is stuck on “panic”.

But here’s a funny video that involves a baby. Whenever we want to panic, we sit back and think about cute babies and things usually go back to normal. Maybe the government should start watching more YouTube videos that involve cute little chubby baby cheeks?

PS: We're slightly concered about what was done to this kid to make him cry on cue...

In my last post I discussed how, despite President Bush’s claims of success within Iraq, secretarian violence continues to force Iraqis to leave their homes in fear of their lives. At least four million Iraqis have left their home country since the beginning of the war.

Leaving Iraq is only the beginning of their problems. Thanks to this large number, it is increasingly difficult for an Iraqi to gain asylum.

How difficult you may ask? Read on:

→ According to the Independent, Iraqi asylum applicants within the European Union rose by 98% between 2006 and 2007. In 2006 there were 19,375 and in 2007 there were 38,286.

→ Within many countries traditionally known for their openness to refugees such as Sweden, the saturation of the system brought on partly by the deepening Iraqi refugee crisis, is resulting in a backlash.

In 2007, the Migration Board of Sweden approved 72% of all Iraqi asylum requests. Since then, however, they ruled that there is no longer an armed conflict in Iraq. The BBC reveals that during January and February of 2008, the majority of Iraqi requests for asylum were rejected.

→ According to Refugees International, neighboring countries within the Middle East are being similarly impacted. The growing influx caused Syria to end its’ open door policy in October, imposing visa restrictions on Iraqi refugees. There are 130,000 Iraqis living in Egypt and the country will not accept any more.

In Syria, the influx of refugees has driven up housing prices. In 2005 the Washington Post reported that while in 2004, a two-room apartment in Syria cost $110 a month, at the time of the article it had doubled. Who knows what it is now. One Iraqi they interviewed said that he could not find openings within the Public Schools for his children—another sign that the infrastructure has been overwhelmed.

→ The United States, who for better or worse began the destabilization, has been slow to accept Iraqi refugees. According to the Washington Post, between 2003 and January 2007, the US had allowed only 466 Iraqis to immigrate under refugee status.

In the face of such dwindling options, many Iraqis are left with no place to run.

To remain in Iraq means food and water shortages, no electricity, poor medical care, and constant violence. Humanitarian agencies can do little to soften these realities since, as you know, humanitarian aid workers are frequently kidnapped and their distribution points often targets for suicide bombers.

To leave Iraq, however, often is hardly any better. Rather than nearly certain death, they face the plight of an asylum-seeking refugee where a part of their humanity dies daily— refugee children are often unable to attend school, their parents are unable to find work, the family lives in a tiny shanty, and no one seems to care.

The plight of the Iraqi civilians is incredibly complicated. The presence of US troops alternatively exacerbates and ameliorates their security problems. A total troop pull out right now, therefore, would not solve their problem—it actually would make it worse.

There needs to be safe places created either within Iraq or within the neighboring countries where refugees can go and rebuild their lives. This takes money—the neighboring countries to Iraq have huge poverty issues already. It also takes commitment on the part of the International Community to the crisis in Iraq.

Why should you care?

Well, from the perspective of the “War on Terror”, teenagers and young men are more likely (sometimes women) to turn to guerilla tactics and terrorism after experiencing life as a refugee or in a destabilized state such as Iraq. They feel that they have nothing to live for and hate being powerless in the face of conflict—such feelings are the breeding ground for recruitment by militant groups.

Stability for the Iraqi youth, therefore, is essential for the future stabilization of Iraq and the prevention of further outbreaks of terrorist violence.

On a larger level, refugees are victims of violence. They are not the perpetrators or instigators, they simply are looking for some way to return to a semblance of normalcy. They deserve to be heard and helped.

I remember being accompanied on the subways of New York City by armed soldiers, dressed in camo. I remember waking up every day checking the current terror alert color along side the weather. One day would be yellow, the next day orange…as long as it wasn’t red; I really didn’t care.

So what color terror alert are we on today?

Rudy Giuliani recently spoke to his supporters and reminded them all that terrorism is still here and that it is …

Rudy Giuliani recently spoke to his supporters and reminded them all that terrorism is still here and that it is a reality that we cannot wish away. And yet, polls have shown that 8 out of 10 voters in Florida think that the terrorism threat has disappeared.

The inconsistency here is choking.

Yes, I marginally cared about those alerts…about as much as if it were going to be windy or cloudy on any given day, but the emphasis I placed on these in the past is neither here nor there. The fact that we have politicians broadcasting the ongoing threat without the follow up precautionary steps is what really gets to me.

Is the reality of terrorism more staged than we have been imagining? Many of my skeptic friends would say, “Yes, Of course.” So why the continuing of the charade?

Are these declarations of threat being reiterated on the basis of pride or fact? Certainly, if our leaders felt that this country was still in as much danger as they thought it was immediately after 9/11, our terror alerts would still be in tact and, if the threat were so serious (serious enough to still be at war), why wouldn’t the soldiers still be decorating the New York City subways?

Terror alerts are no longer broadcasted, no longer talked about, no longer even second page news. Does that mean we’re any safer than we were when our president brought them up during every address? According to most Americans, the answer feels like a yes, since the primary concern of most citizens these days seems is somewhere between the economy and American Idol.

And somehow, I can’t help but think American Idol may be posing a much larger threat to the well being of this country than terrorists abroad ever were….
