If you missed the following films last year, the good news is that many of them are on DVD already, or will be soon. So check out what you missed at the cinema, add it your Netflix Queue, and have a 2008 movie night before you get backed up with the upcoming flicks of 2009!

1. The Dark Knight.

It’s a sad irony that Heath Ledger steals the show, after the film got so much publicity following the young actor’s death. Heath Ledger’s death made millions of people flock to the movie, but the truth is, it’s actually effing good. Ledger looks like a lock for a posthumous Oscar as well. Only time will tell.

2. Wall-E

Tell me you weren’t rooting for Wall-E and Eve, and I’ll tell you you have no soul. This cute, witty, futuristic animated tale was a favorite among audiences of all ages.

3. Cloverfield

With an innovative marketing strategy – remember those bizarre commercials guised as pleading cable interruptions? Cloverfield kept us on the edge of our seats and brought the “monster movie” genre to another level with its documentary-style cinematic techniques. Think Godzilla meets Blair Witch.

4. Gone Baby Gone

Ben Affleck’s latest screenplay, starring brother Casey Affleck, Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris has all the makings of a blockbuster: A-list author, lustworthy lead, and two powerhouse Hollywood phenoms. Did I mention the suspense and the action?

5. Milk

2008 was truly a time for change. Though we elected our first black president, we also lost a few steps of progress when California retracted the rights of gays to marry. What better time to release a film about Cali’s first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk? This powerful piece, starring Sean Penn, depicts the tragic assassination of San Fran’s first gay mayor by none other than a former city supervisor.

6. Sweeney Todd

Maybe I’m biased, because Johnny Depp could do a film version of Blake Fielder-Civil’s time in jail, and I’d still pay to see it. But the musical Sweeney was a ground-breaking effort by Stephen Sondheim, and a great excuse to put the equally eccentric Depp and Helena Bonham Carter together to recreate the story of “The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

7. High School Musical 3

All good things come in threes. And you know you wanted another chance to see Zach Effron, Vanessa Hudgens, and “The Tiz” on the silver screen one last time. Who cares if we’re in college? High school musical is the stuff that girl’s nights out are made of. Extra butter on the popcorn, please.

8. Quantum of Solace

The highly anticipated, newest installment of the James Bond chronicles features hottie Daniel Craig and takes off only days after the shocking ending of Casino Royale, in which notorious ladies’ man Bond lost his lover. No time for tears, though, as this film immediately thrusts our hero into another jampacked ride to fight consipiracy.

9. Sex and the City

Well it took ten years, but Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha finally made it to the big screen. And it only took 300 pieces of H Stern jewelry for us to find out Big’s full name, and to see Carrie finally get her glass slipper (or, rather, blue Manolo) and live happily ever after.

10. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

A freaky-deaky plot involving a baby who was born as an old man, ages in reverse, and finds love somewhere in the middle is at least a creative diversion from the cliche’d spectacle we usually see in the cinemas. Plus, it’s Brad Pitt. Think of this film as a fantasy version of The Notebook, and go see it. NOW.

James Bond, We Love You

Action movies aren’t notoriously known as “movies for women,” they typically have a special place in a man’s heart. Hence the whole movie genre known as Chick Flicks, which are made just for the ladies. But, there is something about James Bond movies that cross the gender line. I love Bond movies, I have seen them all, and my anticipation for each new movie’s opening is ridiculous.

Today, after all my waiting and agony, the newest installment of James Bond hits the theatres and I’m ready to sit on the edge of my seat and bite my nails. It isn’t just the action and adventure that I love in these movies (usually I’m not one for stupid, over-the-top action movies) but it is everything that accompanies a Bond movie: the oh-so-hot 007 himself, the music, Bond’s gadgets, his cool cars, the Bond girls and their fashion, the mystery, and all the adventure. They are amazing.

To celebrate the opening of Quantum of Solace, College Candy wanted to recap on the hot men who made us lust after Bond, James Bond.

The first Bond (and quite possibly the sexiest) was Sean Connery. Is it his voice? His gorgeous eyes? His classic look? His ability to pack heat? Sean was the first, and for me, the only Bond. None have lived up to him.

The second Bond and the least popular was George Lazenby. He played 007 for one movie and never returned. Thank God. He just doesn’t cut it, definitely when he is suppose to represent the sexiness of Bond, James Bond. He also wore a pirate shirt, maybe it only bothers me, but it is hard to forget.

Roger Moore held the title of James Bond for 12 years, and was pretty great at it. Roger just may be the second best 007, next to of course Sean. Roger gets the credit of turning Bond into more of a playboy and womanizer.

Timothy Dalton took the way Roger played James Bond and made it slightly more darker and gritty. Tim isn’t my pick for Bond and he wasn’t popular among many of the movie critics of the time either. Perhaps, in real life he is more of a “James Bond” because he performed most of his stunts himself.

Pierce Brosnan could possibly be the second best looking James Bond. He is tall, dark, and handsome. He was so good as 007 he became the star of the James Bond video game. Well done Pierce, well done. I was sorry to see you go.

Our newest James Bond is Daniel Craig, whose movie opens today. And already they are talking about him playing 007 in another Bond movie in 2010. Craig’s first movie as Bond, Casino Royale, had the highest gross amount of any previous Bond film. He has even been made into a wax statue at Madame Tussauds, a true honor. However, the CC jury is still out on whether is will beat Sean Connery as the best or not.

Alicia Keys & Jack White Give 007 “Another Way To Die”

The new James Bond flick “Quantum of Solace” (a name we still completely don’t understand) is set to hit theaters in November, but the Alicia Keys / Jack White theme song “Another Way to Die” has just crashed the Internet — and we’ve got it. Take a look, take a listen, and let us know what you think.

Personally, we have a bit of an issue with the way their voices sound together, kind of screechy in parts, but overall, we like the interesting pairing.

…As long as you can ignore the fact that Jack White looks like an 80-year-old man.



Your First Look at ‘Quantum of Solace’ — and Craig Abs

James Bond.  I used to not care.  Then Daniel Craig took over.  And I cared.
Forget that the title of the second installment of the updated Bond franchise makes little to no sense (at least to people like me), and mark your calendars for October 31, 2008 -- the date when Quantum of Solace premieres (seriously..I wikipediaed "quantum" and it has something to do with energy and momentum and photons...so like, the "indivisible entity of a quantity of solace"?).
Anyhoo, the main reason most of us probably want to see this movie is because Craig is guaranteed to be bare-chested a lot and if we pray really hard - naked.  He was naked in the last one.  Who cared that he was being tortured while being naked?  All I saw were Craig abs.
If you can't wait until October to get your Craig fix, here's the new trailer for Quantum. It seems complicated.  I'm not sure what they're talking about. But Judy Dench is there again!  And 007 is shirtless for 2.5 seconds!  Plus, the James Bond music is all badass in the background.
