I have been seeing this guy at school on-and-off since the beginning of the school year. He’s a freshman, I’m a sophomore. At the beginning, we hit it off great for about three weeks, and then he felt that he needed to keep his options open as a freshman–which I understood and let it go. He came back around Thanksgiving time and told me he wanted to start seeing me again, and I agreed. April kicks off national STD Awareness month. I know it doesn’t sound like much fun, but neither does Syphillis.

In conjunction with the national effort to raise awareness of the spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases across college campuses (1 in 4 young women have them!), CollegeCandy will be having our very own STD awareness day on Thursday, April 2nd.

We have invited experts in the field to share their knowledge and experience with us in hopes that we can prevent the spread of these diseases and protect ourselves.

There is so much that young women don’t know about STDs – how they spread, how they can affect our health, if we have them…. – so we thought we’d bring in a doctor to answer everything.

Is there anything you’d like to know? Really, anything. Let us know in the comments section and we’ll pass it on to our friend, Dr. Lissa Rankin. There is no question too “icky” to ask. If you’re a little shy about your issue, email us and we’ll pass it on anonymously.

The more we know the safer we will be, so ask away and come back April 2nd to get your answers. In the meantime, go get tested! We did.

Q: I want to try having sex on the beach this summer. What should I keep in mind?

A: Sex on the beach. It’s the ultimate cliche of sexual fantasies for hopeless romantics everywhere, usually triggered by a movie scene complete with soft lighting and background music. For me, it was Chris Isaak that did it. Specifically, the sexy black-and-white video for his song, “Wicked Game,” featuring soft sand, crashing waves, and leggy supermodel Helena Christensen.

In reality, beach sex rarely includes a soundtrack, and a leggy supermodel is even harder to find. Instead you’re left with wind carrying sand into your eyes and wet particles creeping into your crevices. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that I’ve never actually had sex on a beach. I’m all for trying new things, but it never seemed to be worth the hassle or the worry that I would spend the next three months washing sand out of my crotch.

An informal survey of my friends only served to confirm what I already thought about beach sex — it’s overrated. Those that have dared to bare all and get busy shoreside agree that the reality doesn’t live up to the fantasy.
