Sure, watching the nighttime line-ups this fall might have me drooling over my favorite TV stars flaunting the hottest trends, but what I’m really searching for is something that gives me a little bit more how-to and a little less what-I-can’t-do as far as style goes. When I see the stars marching around on my television, I’m amazed by how effortlessly their style looks. Yes, I know they have teams of stylists and hair and make-up, but who cares? The bottom line is they look amazing and I can’t figure out how to look.

Sure, watching the nighttime line-ups this fall might have me drooling over my favorite TV stars flaunting the hottest trends, but what I’m really searching for is something that gives me a little bit more how-to and a little less what-I-can’t-do as far as style goes. When I see the stars marching around on my television, I’m amazed by how effortless their style looks. Yes, I know they have teams of stylists and hair and make-up, but who cares? The bottom line is they look amazing and I can’t figure out how to look.

The style gods have answered my unfashionable prayers.

“Style Rules”, a 6-part series featuring Rachel Zoe and her all-star team of stylists, follows the style icon as she flies from city to city all over the U.S. challenging girls and their best friends to fashion showdowns.

So, if you’re a little dazed and confused this season (uh, aren’t we all?), get your fashion advice for free as Rachel Zoe puts women up against their friends to find out who’s wearing what and who’s wearing it better!

Pretty much everyone has an opinion on Rachel Zoe. I found myself wondering where I fall on the "love her or hate her" spectrum and determined I'm awkwardly crawling on the middle ground–attempting to justify her diva qualities for some beyond beautiful outfits.

Pretty much everyone has an opinion on Rachel Zoe. I found myself wondering where I fall on the “love her or hate her” spectrum and determined I’m awkwardly crawling on the middle ground–attempting to justify her diva qualities for some beyond beautiful outfits.

Here’s what I’m thinking:

The girl is way too dramatic. There was really no need to badmouth her former assistant Taylor Jacobson as much as she did, she probably shouldn’t have used her newborn for a little extra publicity and she just really needs to eat a sandwich. But I can’t help but like her. And I’m not totally sure why.

To start, she is undeniably talented. While I’d like to think that anyone with an endless supply of cash and access to Barney’s would always look good, this just simply isn’t the case. Even in couture, celebrities can look downright silly sometimes but Rachel Zoe has a knack for dressing people (and herself). Like anyone, she styles a few misses, but generally her clients are red carpet ready and looking damn fabulous.

The woman teaches fashion like a champion. She did a great job working for Saks and has put together countless beautiful outfits. She also never had any formal fashion training, but this didn’t stop her from launching her own line. Pretty cool, right?

But should a fashion line and an interesting blog make me look past her ridiculous antics and often childish behavior? Probably not… We could all use a little less crazy in our lives and in an ideal world, she’d let the clothes speak for themselves. That way, I could be totally justified when I proclaim that I like her, not embarrassed

“Oh my God, I love her shoes!”

“Check out that bag!”

“That dress is amazing.”

We ladies are constantly on the look out for the hottest fashion (at the lowest prices) and the coolest trends. Even the girl who just wears the same pair of jeans every day is looking for a comfortable pair of denim that make her ass look great. And that’s why we’re constantly providing a running commentary on the fashion we see on a daily basis. While some of it is certainly cringe-worthy, there’s a lot of it that is ooo-ahh-I-want-it worthy. It’s not uncommon to see strangers ask each other where someone bought something.

But what about those things you can’t have and the people you can’t ask? The Manolo Blahnik’s you see Carrie Bradshaw wearing on almost every episode of Sex and the City or the Hermes bracelet on Kim Kardashian? Everyone wants it but few can have it…and that’s why I have a never-ending list of celebrity closets I want to raid.

These women have the clothes that make me wish I could walk into Barney’s, whip out a Fendi wallet, take out my limitless Amex Black card, and buy the entire store. Of course, this is currently impossible for me so instead I have to spend my days ogling the fashion magazines and fantasizing about shopping in my fave celebs walk-in closets.

Step with me into my fantasies, will you?

In honor of Women’s History Month, CollegeCandy has decided to spotlight some of the world’s most influential women.
Here at CollegeCandy we like to consider ourselves quite the fashion go-to girls. I mean, we tell you where to shop, what to buy, and how to wear it. So it’s only right that today, the first day of Mercedes Benz Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week (gah, that’s a mouthful!), we offer you our two cents on what’s to come.

But not so much on the clothes themselves, or even the designers. We’ll leave that to the professionals. Instead we’d rather focus on everything else. So here’s what’s coming your way from the runways of New York over the next 7 days. Well, besides the great clothes, and the good looking guys, and the gorgeous models, that is.

1. The ugliest clothes you’ve ever seen. They’ll be hideous. Unflattering. Out of proportion. They will break every fashion rule that has ever been made. No one will ever wear them. And no one will ever want to. But for the entirety of Fashion Week people will rave about how brilliant the designers are, and how great the clothes look. And sure they will probably inspire some really cute outfits from some less than Fashion Week-worthy designers, but those clothes? The originals? Those won’t be worn again. Not even by Blair Waldorf.

2. “New trends” that were also new when your mom was your age. True story. We don’t realize how quickly trends resurface in fashion but all of these new styles that we’re currently loving were loved a long, long time ago as well. Two weeks ago I was watching Glory Daze and an unsuspecting sorority girl opened the door in an oversized sweater and leggings. If it hadn’t been for the horrible side ponytail I would have thought the show suddenly jumped ahead 20 years. So all these new trends you’ll see this week that look like they could have come straight out of the ’70s? They did come straight out of the ’70s.

3. Rachel Zoe’s collarbone. And plenty of other people’s collarbones, as well. Skinny arms. Toothpick legs. And lots and lots of teeny, tiny waists. Love it or hate it, Fashion Week is about the skinny people. So be prepared to be shocked into a sugar coma. Because, personally, there’s nothing I want to do more after watching super tall, super thin models walk down a runway than eat lots and lots of ice-cream. Or jump on the treadmill. We’ll see how it goes. To each her own, you know?

4. Some really weird makeup. Smoky eyes below the eye. Shaved eyebrows. White liner. Bright lips. If anyone rocked these looks to class, or even on the red carpet, people would look at them like, well, like they shaved their eyebrows. But during Fashion Week it’s fabulous. It’s cutting edge. It’s trying something new. It’s treating the models like a canvas, manipulating them to better present the clothes, which, yes, I totally get. I understand the point of it all, but the makeup is still pretty weird.

5. Anna Wintour’s Bob. The editor-in-chief of Vogue. This woman is synonymous with fashion. And with her page boy bob and oversized sunnies. She’ll be there, loving a select few items while also internally tearing apart all the rest. The woman is like a real life Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep’s evil boss to Anne Hathaway’s scared intern). So watch closely to see if she nods or shakes her head. Or better yet, watch to see if she purses her lips. You remember what that means right? Absolute disaster.

Now that sounds like fun.

I understand that fashion is completely subjective, but these Haute Couture designs seem like something that would worry Tim Gun and have Michael Kors shaking his overly tanned head.
While Rachel Zoe won’t be going bananas at New York Fashion Week until February, our croissant eating friends spent this past week celebrating Haute Couture fashion in Paris. The world’s best designers dressed the world’s skinniest women in their hand-sewn wears as celebrities, stylists and fashion enthusiasts drooled from their seats.

From where I’m sitting though, it all looked like a whole lot of crazy.

I understand that fashion is completely subjective, but these Haute Couture designs seem like something that would worry Tim Gun and have Michael Kors shaking his overly tanned head. Giant ruffles? Boxy shapes? All those nip slips? This is the best these fashion legacies have to offer? And we’re supposed to love it?

I’m sure I’m supposed to be so excited that I just can’t hide it, but if this is the direction fashion is going, I’m so….scared.

Check out the craziest of the crazy of Paris Fashion Week below.

Confession: I miss hot-mess Nicole Richie. You know, 2003, fresh out of rehab, best friends with Paris Hilton, multi-colored, slightly raggedy extensions rocking, flashing boobies at fashion shows Nicole. I mean, sure, the babies are cute, her hair always looks silky and glorious, and the same antics that a 22-year-old engages in are a lot less cute in a 30-year-old. But still. I’m always a little bummed when not-Lindsay-tragic hot messes start domesticating themselves, because their uninhibited messiness is kind of admirable.

But it’s no big, because now I can admire Nicole for her banging sense of style. She’s the reason we all know who Rachel Zoe is, because Ms. Zoe is the one who gave Nicole a makeover even Cher Horowitz would be impressed by. And after Nicole became a style icon, suddenly every Hollywood starlet under the age of 30 was in Rachel’s care, but while they all looked like clones, Nicole always stood out. She has a strong sense of self that comes through in the outfits she wears, so while she may be uber trendy, she never looks dull or uninspired.

Shopping Info: Shorts, Shirt, Vest, Tights, Pumps.

Okay, upon first glance, you might look at this outfit and then give me major side-eye through your computer. It is one of those outfits that only someone who walks a red carpet regularly should be wearing, but I mean, college is basically Hollywood, and the quad/bar/classroom is your red carpet. This is the only time we can can get away with wearing anything we want before we eventually (economic climate permitting) acquire real jobs with enforceable dress codes. So why not take the opportunity to wear slightly crazy ish?

I completely love this whole “9000 ’80s trends threw up on me but I make it look hot anyway” aesthetic Nicole is rocking in this outfit. Adding pizazz to an oversized button down with a shiny black vest. Without a vest, this would still be a hot daytime look, but with this cute sequined one from Forever 21, now you’re ready for a chill night out. And I know I’m not the only one aching to rock some summer clothes, so why not throw on a pair of shorts (distressed or not) and winterize them with a pair of tights. This look is best with short-shorts, and luckily, every single store only seems to carry the hoochiest of shorts (or do I just have freakishly long legs? bah). Then, to add some major pizazz, throw on some suede stilettos, the highest ones you can teeter strut comfortably in, and bam, you’ve got yourself a super trendy, fun, fabulous outfit that Rachel Zoe would literally die over without her so-high-you’ll-die budget.

We live in a social media obsessed world. There’s Facebook, Myspace, (although I wonder if anyone actually still uses it), Twitter, and many blogging platforms such as Tumblr, WordPress, and Blogger. Although we upload our pictures to Flickr and Facebook all the time or write about our weekend experiences in personal blogs, there could be a possible downside to all of this internet exposure: According to the Wall Street Journal, 85% of hiring managers Google a candidate before or after an interview. This fact, which is becoming more and more well-known, brings up the question: To blog or not to blog?

While I’m not saying that anyone who publicly posts pictures of themselves puking into a fraternity bathroom shouldn’t be a cause for concern, I am posing the question of boundaries and what and when a company should base their decision on hiring someone because of what comes up when they use Google. For example, take all the CollegeCandy contributors. Should our future bosses decline an interview with us, even though our resumes may be well qualified, simply because we once wrote an article that mentions sex or highlights the importance of birth control?

Personally, I think keeping a blog of any kind is a worthwhile venture. As a writer, I like to post things I’m interested in, things that drive me crazy, and of course, continuously write about things that matter to me (this includes everything from literary theory criticisms to the correct usage of the Real Housewives of New Jersey’s infamous phrase “prostitution whore”). However, I often worry that if I post liberal-sided articles or a picture of me enjoying a glass of wine that someone may use those things against me and blow them out of proportion one day. Despite more and more social media outlets being introduced to society on a regular basis, it seems like the idea of censorship or hiding oneself (at least the internet brand of oneself) is becoming a constant battle.

But get this – the Wall Street Journal also reports that “Recruiters and employers…routinely do online background searches on their candidates to learn more about them, as well as to filter out candidates with little or negative information about them.” So basically, it seems like our generation is damned if we do, damned if we don’t.

Imagine if you have nothing come up when your future employer Googles you. Instead of them rewarding you for that (something more and more colleges and media-outlets tell us to strive for), they pass on you because you aren’t relevant or important enough. But then, if you have an author’s page or Twitter account, something could be taken out of context or perceived as negative. What about people that disagree with this article? Could my future employer one day decline to hire me because some random commenter disagreed with me – putting me in a negative position?

It sounds crazy, I know, but it’s something that constantly comes up in the world of online writing and social media. While I understand why businesses want to search their job candidates, I think some kind of line in the sand needs to be drawn before too many well-deserving candidates are overlooked simply because they blog about Christian Louboutin’s, OPI nail polish, and Rachel Zoe instead of Wall Street, international trade, and compounding interest.

The issue of ‘to blog or not’ seems to constantly rely on personal judgment. However, personal judgment works both ways. For example, if someone is irresponsible enough to post a picture of themselves humping (see – because I used the word humping in this post, I may possibly never get a real job) a stop sign, they acted in poor judgment. Although they may personally have found it funny and did not make the picture private, their actions overwhelmingly were not in the best of judgment.

But think of it this way – what if your potential employer’s personal judgment doesn’t like your Tweet about his/her favorite restaurant, and decides that you come across as too opinionated because you simply wrote “Will not be eating at Restaurant A again.” Their personal judgment could cost you a good opportunity. The bottom line is that not everyone uses the best personal judgment from time to time (including those in hiring positions), and what one person finds offensive may not be a big deal to someone else. Should our generation have to walk on eggshells so we don’t piss anyone off with our opinions and views on the internet? Is this what it’s coming down to?

Blogger Emily Rose, a recent college graduate wrote a ballsy open post to a potential future employer on her Tumblr, after accidentally sending her blog link in her e-mail signature. Instead of cowering in fear over whether or not her employer would show no interest in her because of her personal interests explored on her blog (such as hung-over day after snap shots and mojito cupcakes), Emily wrote: “You’ll probably learn more about me from this blog than you did from my CV, which is fine. You’ve probably figured out some stuff already: like that I love animals and Africa and my family. But also, you know, sometimes I drink. And I spend a lot of time online….the result of those factors is now what’s on your monitor, and I don’t feel compelled to apologize for any of it.”

While some people may be completely appalled that she would be so open about herself like that, I think Emily is onto something. If we can’t be our true selves or represent things about ourselves in a personal manner, even in a public way such as the internet, then what does that say about society today? In conclusion of her post, Emily hits the nail on the head by writing, “I think I’m a good hire. I think I’m a good person, too. And I don’t think typing bad words or posting a picture of myself with friends at a bar blowing off some steam should affect my chances just because I’m a young person, and the lives of young people are more public and accessible than those of our parents.”

All in all, interviews, resumes, recommendations, and qualifications should remain as the most important factors in getting hired or rejected. But instead of using personal media against this generation, maybe it should be looked at a different way. With our generation riding the first wave of this Google exposure (or shall we call it overexposure?) phenomenon, it will be interesting to see what pans out. Ultimately though, I hope for the sake of our generation – we’re not looked at like this forever. Employers, writers, job applicants, and social media users of all kinds should embrace the more public and accessible use of information today, or at least set some boundaries for the years and technological advancements to come.

As much as we want to deny it, if my frozen toes are any indication, winter is on its way. And with winter comes lots of dark, gloomy fashion. The black and gray sweaters, the dark jeans, the Uggs. Ugh.

But why? Winter is a beautiful season – all that bright, sparkly white snow – so I say it’s time to trade those winter woes for winter whites. The fashion gods say we aren’t supposed to wear white after Labor Day, but I say hell to the no. And so does my favorite fashion maven, Rachel Zoe. (The girl may be crazy, but when it comes to style, I totes trust her.)

The trick to successfully pulling off white in the winter-time is making sure you keep your look more “snow angel” and less nautical/I’m on a (mother effing) boat. So avoid those light, loose fabrics and mix in heavier pieces (think suede, velvet, heavy sweaters and thick tights).

Need some help? Here are three ways to wear white in the winter.

Winter White Lace

Product Information: Dress – Nordstrom, $46; Tights – Kohl’s, $12; Platform Pumps – Forever 21, $24.80.

Pair this white lace dress with thick opaque tights and suede pumps to keep it cozy yet chic for the winter!

Winter White and Brown

Product Information: Dress - Charlotte Russe, $39.50; Boots – Lulus, $73; Tights – Kohl’s, $12.

I love the contrast of pairing textured tights and casual suede boots with this dress (although it totes can be dressed up with nylons and nude patent pumps!).

Winter White Jeans

Product Information: Jeans – Gap, $52.99; Blazer – Charlotte Russe, $44.50; Button Down – Urban Outfitters, $38; Boots – Forever 21, $34.80.

I know white jeans in the winter seem totally off base, but paired with leather riding boots, a flannel (tucked in) and a velvet blazer, it totally works. In fact it does more than just work- it’s totally adorable!
