There are over 100 million sites on the Internet. 100 million! You might think you know about all the important ones (CollegeCandy, Gmail, Google, Zappos, 43 Things…), but there are thousands of other sweet sites out there. And more showing up every day! We get it – it’s not easy or fun sifting through the crap and porn to find those gems, so we’re gonna bring the gems to you. Just sit back, kick up those feet and allow us to introduce you to the diamonds in the internet rough.
Dining options in college are pretty slim: either you can eat yet another salad, sandwich, or boring hot entrée at the dining hall, which can become a snoozefest, or you can get takeout/go out to eat, which can get expensive. And then there’s the whole “cook for yourself” idea, if your dorm has a kitchen or you live off-campus. And you know how to boil water….
Did you just laugh at the thought?
Do the contents of your fridge include a jar of pickles, some cans of beer and a package of cheese…and that’s it?
Think cooking for yourself is damn near impossible because you don’t have anything to make?
Think again. Read More »

You know how when you go to a restaurant and order a veggie burger, you always end up paying $8 for a tasteless circular patty of cardboard? Or, worse, a freaking Boca Burger that you can get for $.50 at home?
Yeah, what a rip-off.
Is it that hard to make a decent veggie burger? No, and I’m here to prove it.
Seriously, restaurants have no excuse to pull that kind of crap on people. Veggie burgers are super easy to make, and make well. Next time you want a nice juicy veggie burger that actually tastes good, save your 8 bucks and hit the kitchen instead.
(This recipe is modified from Cooking for Two, a book I can’t recommend enough.)
Here’s what you need to make 4 burgers:
- Olive oil
- 2-3 green onions
- ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons rolled oats
- 1 zucchini
- 1 large carrot or 2 small carrots
- 2 tablespoons tahini
- 1½ tablespoons fresh parsley
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- ¼ cup flour Read More »

[I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the epitome of prim and proper- heck, who really is nowadays? But looking around at the misguided youths of today *ahem drinking buddies*, I’m starting to think that Miss Manners might have been onto something.
While you may never need to know how to greet a duke or how to tell which fork is REALLY the oyster fork, knowing how to deal with people whom owe you money, how much to tip, and how to address the ever annoying licorice-in-teeth conundrum without being rude might actually come in handy in the real world. I'm not trying to be your mother - oh goodness, no - I'm just here to help you out of those little etiquette dilemmas. So here goes: a quick lesson in etiquette. The sh*t you might actually need to know.]
These days, it seems like the etiquette rules of the past just can’t keep up with the changing face of communication. Now, I like my cell phone as much as the next person, but there are some things you just shouldn’t do with a phone…
- Having a cell phone lets you talk whenever, whereever, but that doesn’t mean you should. It’s rude to talk on the phone in restaurants, movie theaters, libraries, lecture halls, opera houses (does anyone actually go to those?), etc. Keep your phone on silent. Duh.
- What’s more, it’s rude to talk loudly. I don’t mean the “slightly-above-normal-speaking-level” loud. I mean the “STRAIGHT-UP-SCREAMIING-INTO-YOUR-PHONE-LIKE-IT’S-A-MEGA-PHONE“ loud. If you have to scream, take it somewhere private. Otherwise, realize that the other person will hear you whether you’re screaming or whispering (preferably, talking normally). Plus it makes you look super crazy if you’re walking down the street screaming into a hidden Bluetooth. Read More »

(A girl and her boyfriend at a large restaurant table.)
Girl: He’s really wonderful. He doesn’t speak a lot of English, though. Right, honey? Not so much English?
Boyfriend: *shrug, smile of confusion*
(Sad girl, on the phone.)
Girl: I know. I should really stop dating boys when I realize they’re evil overlords.
(A bunch of people sitting around a campfire.)
Girl 1: Marshmallows are kinda gross, when you think about it.
Girl 2: I think it’s a good kind of gross. Like tiny, edible fat people. Read More »

Paneer…the very word makes my mouth water and my stomach happy. If you’re familiar with Indian cuisine, you might know about paneer. If you don’t, though, then you’re seriously missing out.
I used to go to Indian restaurants just to order a fantastic, steaming-hot plate of paneer butter masala or mutter paneer. I couldn’t afford to do it often, because $15 is a little steep for just one dish, but it was worth it. Now, though, I can cook the same things in my own kitchen for the same deliciousness but a much smaller cost.
Why? Because I finally found out how to get and cook paneer!
Often called “cottage cheese” on Indian menus, paneer is just about as far away from American cottage cheese as you can get. It’s a solid, firm cheese that is made from thick curds, and it softens when cooked but holds its shape in cubes. If it sounds a little hard to describe, it is. Just trust me that it’s delicious. I have been watching my weight for as long as I can remember and am always on the lookout for new products and ideas that will make eating healthy a little bit easier. I love perusing the recipes on foodnetwork.com, learning about fun new products on hungrygirl.com and reading new food research anywhere I can. My years of research have taught me how to maintain a healthy lifestyle every day.
Not that I had a choice. When I was still in school, living a healthy lifestyle was impossible. From the drinking, to the partying, to the daily late night pizza runs; my body was begging for something green. And growing larger and more icky every day. I can’t even believe I made it out alive…and that my blood didn’t turn into some sort of vodka marinara sauce.
But that’s beside the point.
Today I was playing around on Yahoo and saw the headline: “Healthy Dining: Eating Healthy on the Go.” I immediately clicked it. Eating out is one of the hardest things for me; I never know what is going into my food and how to stop myself before downing a giant family-sized portion. I was so excited to read some real tips that would help me make better choices at restaurants.
And then I read it. Read More »

So, you like food, like going out to eat, but don’t want to waste your money on a restaurant you know nothing about and which may end up being sooo not worth the $10 price tag.
You don’t mind doing a little research, but can’t seem to find a website for 20-somethings on a budget (I mean, who doesn’t want to try a $25 dollar burger? I wouldn’t mind, but my wallet would).
All those top rated restaurants come with top rated price tags, not to mention miniscule portions and sides of snails and fish eggs.
Well, worry no more, Foodies. I’ve got the website of your dreams.
Cheapassfood.com is a funny, colorful, and oh so age appropriate website that gives picture perfect reviews on food people like us would actually want to eat.
From BBQ joints to tiny, no name Japanese noodle houses, Cheapassfood allows readers to post their favorite restaurants on the website, most of the reviews including mouth watering close-ups of yummy yum yums. Read More »

There are only two days left to buy the guy who never forgets to call you back the perfect Father’s Day gift. But what does a middle aged man really want besides a jumbo screen TV, a flashy car, and a prolonged vacation on a tropical island? Probably lots of other very expensive things we can’t afford.
All kidding aside, finding something your dad will actually like can be a difficult task. This is why I have arranged ideas by budget in order to get your gift giving vibes flowing:
If you’re loaded: Maybe you have a killer summer job or maybe you run some type of sketchy monetary operation. Either way, you’re looking to spend the big bucks on dad.
BBQSauceoftheMonth.com membership- $19.95/mo ($240/yr)- Dads are known as universal masters of the grill. This website will send your dad two new barbecue sauces each month to experiment with. This is a plus for you if you like to eat because it will prompt your dad to throw some steaks or ribs onto the fire.
Snap-On Tools-$25-$500- Not all dads are handymen, but some can get pretty serious about their tools. Snap On tools are revered in male circles as one of the most respectable tool brands. Get a male friend or boyfriend to chat your dad up and see which tool he’s lacking. Then head online to snapon.com. You may want to check out eBay before making any purchases, because some of these items can cost more than a crappy car. Read More »
