It’s been nine months since Rihanna’s bruised and beaten face appeared on the cover of tabloids across America. And while Chris Brown did his fair share of talking and apologizing publicly, Rihanna remained silent…. until now.

Glamour magazine recently named Rihanna one of their Women of the Year and in return she granted them her first exclusive interview since her attack. She opened up about her past, the ordeal with Chris Brown, her message to young women and how the past eight months inspired her new album.

It was open and real…and the timing couldn’t have been better.

I don’t want to be a cynic, but it seems quite, well, convenient that Rihanna finally talks to the media right around the time her new album is set to release. If there was ever a time to use her fame to speak out against domestic abuse and help other young women in her position, it seems just perfect to do it at a time when it can benefit her career as well.

“I’ve put everything I’ve wanted to say for the past eight months into my music. [My new album] is super fearless — which is exactly how I feel right now. I am in a really good place.”

Let it be known that I fully support Rihanna. Domestic abuse flies under the radar in far too many cases, and there should be more people like Rihanna telling their stories. But I just don’t know why she couldn’t have done this sooner. Why now, Rihanna? Why now?

I’d hate to say this interview is strategic publicity.

Now I’m not saying I won’t tune in to watch Rihanna’s interview with Diane Sawyer Thursday on Good Morning America (or Friday on 20/20); her side of the story has been long awaited. And I understand that being splashed all over the tabloids and having your privacy invaded is no one’s idea of a good time. But personally, I think I see a hidden agenda here. And I tend to feel a little weird about using one’s misfortunes to make money.

I guess a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. But just for the record: I was always going to buy the album, interview or no interview.

Rihanna’s gonna tell her side of the story.
