Kirsten Dunst wore this Rodate Spring 2012 dress to the Museum of Contemporary Arts Gala earlier this week. She is the first celebrity to wear the new-season empire gown, which featured a strapless bodice and aqua and lace tiers. She paired it with pretty makeup and 40s style hair, diamond jewellery and a Chanel clutch.
I am just really not feeling this dress. Maybe it’s because I’m curvy, but I just don’t feel shapeless dresses. It also seems to be a little bit too big for her and hangs kinda awkwardly. Without her hand on her hip, her whole shape kinda gets lost. I’m not a massive fan of the colour either- I know it’s a big thing to wear next season, but it just feels kinda inappropriate and weird to be wearing such a summery colour, and such a summery style, in the middle of November. There just seems to be something missing, whether that’s a more-dramatic eye, a bolder lip, dazzling shoes or stand-out accessories, but the look just seems to feel a little incomplete. Read More »

[Like it or not, we all judge people every day. Especially when it comes to their fashion choices. From the girl with the too-short skirt for class to the old guy who insists on wearing short shorts and doing butterfly stretches at the gym (yeah, try to get that visual out of your head), it's impossible not to form an opinion. And now we're gonna share those opinions with the world. Every week, I'll be highlighting a celebrity look that I may love/hate/not understand and see what you, my college fashionistas, think about it. So put on your Joan Rivers fashion cap (which is undoubtedly made out of all the skin she's had nipped and tucked over the years) and let it all out.]
One thing I love about being British is the word “quirky.” This word is frequently flung around as an affectionate way of saying that we dress kinda eclectically and often downright weird. It’s the word that allows us to get away with looking like our Grandmas and wearing our boyfriend’s clothes (the delightful Ms. Chung springs to mind). But being “quirky” and a little out-there doesn’t always work, no matter how willowy you are.
Take this dress for example. It has that perfect “found-this-in-a-vintage-store” look, despite the fact it’s price was probably closer to that of a yacht. But it also looks a little too grungy. It really should be a gorgeous dress, with the light tan color, pretty sparkles and adorable collar, but I’m not sure if it’s the odd shoulder that looks like it’s falling off her, or the tiered skirt, but it definitely looks like something old Aunt Hilda donated to Goodwill. I like that she’s kept her makeup and jewelery simple with so much going on in the dress, but maybe a lighter shoe would have tied the look in better — or a black clutch to pull together the black shoes. I’m a firm believer that there is nothing better than designer clothing you can actually afford. For the past five years, Target’s Go! International collections have made many dreams come true, bridging the gap between affordability and designer fashion. They’ve collaborated with many designers over the last five years, and in celebration they’re releasing a 34-piece collection featuring dresses from 17 of their favorite designers! Yes, they’re giving you another chance to snatch up something you missed the first time around (or the second if you didn’t want to pay inflated eBay prices).
SQUEAL!
To celebrate Target’s bridging of our favorite designers with a price tag that won’t have us eating ramen noodles for the rest of our college careers, we’re honoring our 5 favorite collections of all time. So thank you, Target, for filling my closet with designer threads when all I really went to the store for was a roll of toilet paper and some shampoo.

Just as we’re sadly parting with our flip flops and trading them in for knee-high boots (theoretically…not me, though. I keep wearing mine till Thanksgiving!) we get a sunny reminder of what we’ll have to look forward to this Spring: crunches until we die and gorgeous drapey dresses.
Yes, Fashion Week is officially over and it’s time to dive into that much needed brownie, models! to take a look at what we’ll all be wearing once the snow melts this June spring. What do the designers have in store for us? (In store? Get it? Store?! Ha!) We’ve watched every last show and seen every last look (thanks, Stylelist!) and here’s what’s coming for Spring 2011.
Oh, and don’t worry – it will not be this. Read More »

Fashion Week and all its bittersweet glory has come and gone. The last Fashion Week to be shown at Bryant Park, designers pulled out all of the tricks under their sleeves to make it unforgettable. The big white tents, made even whiter by the snow, brought new looks into the new decade that will be sure to translate into your wardrobe. So what will you be wearing next fall? Read More »

September is one of my favorite months for many reasons: Back-to-school, Labor Day, Lil’ Wayne’s Birthday, Starbucks’s Pumpkin Spice Lattes and, of course, Fashion Week. Fashion Week is actually a misnomer; instead of a week, it is a month-long event full of runway shows, presentations and parties that starts in good ol’ NYC, and then travels to London, Milan and Paris.
Don’t know your Marc Jacobs from your Calvin Klein? If the only designers you know hail from Project Runway or Go! International lines at Target, listen up. Here are five hot designers whose work has them poised to become the next Oscars de la Renta and Diane von Furstenbergs.
Grab a bib and get ready to drool. Read More »

Historically, women have always been shoved into a little feminine box. We have always had to be proper – pinky out when drinking tea, crossing our legs at the ankle when sitting on the couch, letting the man make all the first moves. That trend has made its exit in the past 10 or so years, but for some reason, it still stuck around in the fashion world. Frilly dresses, delicate fabrics and beautifully crafted footwear are the staple of many women’s wardrobes.
But that custom’s days are also fleeting.
There is a new look making its way on runways from Paris to New York that is pairing the daintiness of yesteryear with the attitude of the modern day woman. And it is easy to do: the trick is to pump up the hardware on your feet and temper the volume of your dress so you look fresh and strong – not like Avril Lavigne. Read More »
