Here at CollegeCandy we like to consider ourselves quite the fashion go-to girls. I mean, we tell you where to shop, what to buy, and how to wear it. So it’s only right that today, the first day of Mercedes Benz Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week (gah, that’s a mouthful!), we offer you our two cents on what’s to come.
But not so much on the clothes themselves, or even the designers. We’ll leave that to the professionals. Instead we’d rather focus on everything else. So here’s what’s coming your way from the runways of New York over the next 7 days. Well, besides the great clothes, and the good looking guys, and the gorgeous models, that is.
1. The ugliest clothes you’ve ever seen. They’ll be hideous. Unflattering. Out of proportion. They will break every fashion rule that has ever been made. No one will ever wear them. And no one will ever want to. But for the entirety of Fashion Week people will rave about how brilliant the designers are, and how great the clothes look. And sure they will probably inspire some really cute outfits from some less than Fashion Week-worthy designers, but those clothes? The originals? Those won’t be worn again. Not even by Blair Waldorf. High-end fashion brands like Brian Reyes and Louis Vuitton showcased several looks featuring big shoulders on the spring 2009 runways. While I’m not advocating stealing some eighties-style shoulder pads from (hopefully deep inside) your mom’s closet, you can still rock the big shoulder trend.
And why would you want to? Well, for one, it’s everywhere. And it’s chic, unlike the shoulder pads of the 80s. Still not convinced? How about the fact that wearing a top or dress with ruffled or puffed up shoulders can balance out wide hips and make arms appear slimmer? Yeah, I thought so.
Here are some of my favorite picks at every price point: Read More »

The old rule of wearing only one print at a time is boring and, thankfully, no longer applies. Mixing different patterns has become an art in fashion and is taking over the runways. It can be tricky to pair pieces with different prints together without looking mismatched or crazy like that old lady in the grocery store, but the designers who put together the clothes above (left to right: Dolce & Gabbana, Pollini, Dries Van Noten, and Prada) got it right.
Here are some easy and fun ideas for translating this trend into something you can wear every day: Read More »

Sheer fabrics were on practically every spring ’09 RTW (ready to wear, for those of you not in the runway know!) runway. The models above are sporting ensembles from Alberta Ferretti, Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, and Chanel.
While this trend may look super sexy on the runway (and the runway models), it can end up looking super trampy when worn in real life if not done correctly. Adding in sheer details or layering will help you rock this trend without showing too much skin. Read More »

A colorful graphic tee (like the Henry Holland ones above) will make your outfit stand out. However, if it’s not usually your style, it can be hard to incorporate one into your ensemble without looking too casual, too punky, or like you’re trying too hard.
Below are a few examples for different ways to rock the graphic tee. You can pair one with dressier items for a more glam look, or work it with some basic jeans and fun accessories for the more casual version. Whatever you do, have fun with it. These shirts aren’t mean to be taken seriously. Read More »
