CollegeCandy is headed out to San Francisco for Adobe Days! While we’re out there, we’re going to be playing with some of the latest creative software Adobe has to offer and learning about new ways to bring the products to you, the students.  We’re super excited for this opportunity, but got stumped on the classic travel question: What do we pack to wear?

As summer rapidly approaches, chances are you’ll be traveling at least once. We thought we’d share the essential outfits hours of brainstorming left us with… Read More »

Sex in the News: Crisis Pregnancy Centres

There’s a lot going on when it comes to reproductive health these days. First Herman “anti-abortion but women should choose” Cain, found himself clarifying his stance on abortion. Then there’s been different state-issues on Crisis Pregnancy Centers.

In case you don’t have a background knowledge on Crisis Pregnancy Centers let me clear it up for you. A CPC, or pregnancy resource center (PRC), works to counsel women against have abortions. They’re non-profits, generally run by Christian organizations. In the United States there are about 4,000 of these centers, with about 20 states providing funding them. Read More »

Get Up and Run…The Best Race, Ever

If you take a stroll around my city, you’ll see girls and guys alike donning short shorts and track jackets, music a-blastin’ from their iPods. They’re only participating in the latest craze we like to call running. If you haven’t joined the club, now is the best time to do so! Why?

1. Nothing feels better than setting a goal of 5K, 10K, half or even a full marathon…and actually finishing it. Talk about extreme motivation.

2. Trying to get that 6-pack to peek through? Running has amazing cardio benefits that’ll shed an extra layer of fat.

3. You don’t need equipment. Just your fave pair of running shoes and you’re good to go.

4. The running community is extremely supportive. There are fun runs almost everywhere! Check out places like Sports Basement, Lululemon Athletica or Nike.

5. Runner’s high! It exists, trust me. Read More »

San Francisco Welcomes Prostitutes

pretty-woman-roberts_l.jpgWith the economy in the toilet, finding a job these days is like lookin’ for a needle in a haystack (or a good guy in a college town. Ayooooo!). But for those of you interested, San Francisco is looking to decriminalize prostitutes in the city in an effort to free up some $11 million police spend on arresting prositutes every year!

Woo! Work for everyone! Forget that English major; sex is the way. to. go.

Proposition K is being proposed, not to illegalize prostitution, but to eliminate the power of the po-po to go after the Vivian Wards of San Francisco.

Opposers of the proposition say passing it will result in an overflow of prostitutes, pimps and possibly harm the fight against sex trafficking; since the proposition would not allow the investigation of prostitution, authorities wouldn’t have the opportunity to help those being victimized by sex trafficking. Clearly, that is incredibly serious.

On the flip side, though, this could be the push the economy needs! $700 billion bailout, schmailout – San Francisco has the right idea.

So what do you think? Should the pretty women of SF be allowed to keep their posts on the sidewalks without worry of being handcuffed (and not in the good way)? Or should the po-diggies be allowed to continue their investigation of prostitution and sex trafficking?

Palin Syrah — The Most Unpopular Wine in California

palinsyrahwine.jpgIt’s not just a bunch of Democrats who aren’t so thrilled about McCain’s VP candidate. The proprietors of a wine bar in San Francisco, California are pissed that their once best selling wine “Palin Syrah” has taken a popularity hit.

“It was our best selling wine before (the V.P. announcement),” the owner sighed when asked about the beverage debacle.

Could it be that people aren’t ordering Palin Syrah on principal? “People started making suggestions [about what the wine tastes like] like gunpowder, moose meat, hockey mom – the list goes on and on.” The bar owner is quoted as saying. “It’s funny, but it’s all we’ve heard for the last couple weeks.”

Who knows, maybe Obama or Biden or McCain himself will get a liquor sort of named after them — just to make things even. It could be funny, especially if they make some kind of crazy mixed liquor concoction and call it “ObamaRama.” Imagine ordering that a bar?

Am I Crazy for Trying Crazy Blind Date?

1.jpg

More and more people are looking for love online these days and I’ll admit, I’m one of them. I honestly don’t know where else to find a date besides the typical bar/club scene, which seems much more conducive to finding a one night stand than finding love. I don’t work in an environment where I meet eligible bachelors, I pretty much know my friends’ friends so getting set up isn’t really an option. So where else do you look? People tell me I should do something I enjoy; a cooking class, hanging out in Barnes & Noble, join some sort of sports league and I’ll meet a guy who shares similar interests with me, but as social as I am, I’m not one to go to a cooking class alone, and I have yet to meet a guy in B&N. So that leaves me with the internet.

Sure, it’s scary and I’ve had my fair share of weirdos or guys who were several inches shorter than what they claimed, or sent pictures from when they were 10 years and 50 pounds lighter, but I’ve also been taken on some pretty amazing dates and met some really cool guys, some of whom I’ve remained friends with. Obviously, my prince hasn’t come along, but maybe the timing just hasn’t been right. I’ve tried a lot of the sites out there; match.com, Plenty of Fish, okcupid, Craig’s List, eHarmony and even Jdate (yes, I’m a shiksa who likes Jewish boys). Thus far, I’ve had the best luck on Craig’s List and the worst luck with match and eHarmony (the one that claims it’ll help you find your soulmate), but as I’m still single, I haven’t had the luck I’m really looking for, so I decided to try out a new site, it’s called crazyblinddate.com, and yes, it’s crazy. McCain’s Budget-Balancing Boasts Under Fire (and More!)

On Tuesday, the United States and Czech Republic signed the first part of the controversial missile defense system pact. Russia responded with a warning that if the US and Czech Republic go ahead with the system it will be forced to react with military means. The US maintains that the system is aimed at the Middle East, not Russia. If the US gets its’ way, by 2012 the shield will be operable—consisting of a tracking radar site in the Czech Republic and 10 interceptor missiles in Poland.

In Other News:

Also on Tuesday, the White House officially apologized to Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi after a major diplomatic screw-up. In the official press kit distributed to reporters accompanying the President to the G8 summit, Berlusconi was referred to as a man, “hated by many”, “known for governmental corruption and vice”, and as a “political dilettante (amateur)”.

Apparently the bio was taken directly from the Encyclopedia of World Biography. Berlusconi is one of Bush’s few friends in Western Europe and a key supporter of the Iraq war. Read More »

Trouble Follows the Torch

_41457776_paris-getty-416.jpgIn several previous posts I discussed the intense controversy surrounding the upcoming Beijing Olympics. In recent weeks the traditional international journey of the Olympic Torch has served as a flash point for clashes between supporters and protesters.

Ironically, this torch relay was supposed to be the largest in Olympic history—a showcase of international cooperation and sport. Instead, it has become a testament to international outrage over China’s human rights abuses, especially over Tibet.

March 31: A huge carefully scripted ceremony at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square sent the torch off across the globe

April 3: In Istanbul, Turkey, the Uighur expat community staged demonstrations against Chinese persecution of their “brother” expats in Xinjiang. In February 2007, for example, an Uigur activist named Ismail Semed, was executed on the shaky grounds of attempting to “split the motherland” and possessing explosives.

April 6: Massive clashes occurred between Free Tibet protesters and police during the London relay. Thirty-seven protesters were arrested including a man who tried to snatch the torch away from one of the runners. Another tried to put out the torch with a fire extinguisher. Read More »
