I Got Your Back, Gabby Sidibe

Not too long ago, a woman by the name of Gabourey Sidibe graced us with her (incredibly talented) presence in Precious. Not too long after that, she was nominated for ‘Best Actress’ at the Oscars.   That is quite the achievement for a woman discovered minutes before being handed the script for Precious.

Beyond her insane ability to serenade America with her acting talents, the girl is a hoot.  You heard her on the Oscar red carpet mid-spin, “If fashion was porn this would be the money shot.”  Needless to say, I’m a Team Gabby all the way.

After deeply establishing my ‘You go girl’ attitude towards the new found Hollywood talent, (and after hearing Oprah’s amazing tribute to her) I felt angry and resentful when Sandra Bullock took home the ‘Best Actress’ trophy at the Academy Awards. OK, that’s putting it lightly. I stood up and screamed at the TV. Yes, I understand it was “Bullock’s year,” and yes, I’ve always loved Sandy, but it was like the Taylor Swift VMA situation all over again. I just wanted to jump through my TV and pull a Kanye: “Imma let you finish, Sandra, but we all know Gabby had the best performance of the year.” Read More »

We Heart June

fathers daySchool is officially out! Time to put away those books and pull out the swim suit, because June is here. And along with the beginning of summer comes a bunch of stuff to do in celebration of sun and fun.

1)    Happy Birthday, Donald Duck!

He debuted in the cartoon “The Little Wise Hen” on June 9th 1934, so it’s this beloved Disney character’s birthday month! Celebrate Donald Fauntleroy Duck’s birthday by playing Duck, Duck, Donald Duck (goose), rewatch some old Disney classics under a Wearable Towel (touted the “summertime Snuggie”), or sip on a Duck Cocktail.  Or just laugh at the resemblance to Miley Cyrus.

2)    MK&A’s Birthday

Not a b-day for a duck without pants this time, but for tiny twins, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. The only reason I mention them is because they’ve partnered with one of my favorite shoe designers, Steve Madden, to launch a new shoe line under their “Elizabeth and James” label. The shoes aren’t bad-looking, although a bit pricey ($200-$500), and some are strangely made from ostrich and pony hair (but we expect strange from the Olsen twins, of course).

3)    Father’s Day

Mark your calendars for June 21st when we honor our fathers and everything they’ve done for us. Get dad some floss that tastes like bacon, coffee, or waffles, or download the Hulu desktop application for him. If you’re nice enough, maybe he’ll buy you a kitten. Wings included. Read More »

I Want to Go to Rehab!

Lindsay Lohan RehabAll my favorite people — Lindsay, Britney, Nicole, even Marc Jacobs!– seem to be going or have gone to rehab. My question is: When can I go?? From what I’m reading these days, rehab is like the new hot club you have to wait an hour on line to get into, only to be rejected at the door because you’re not cool or famous enough.

I’m assuming normal folk like you and me go to rehab all the time, it’s just not reported in the NY Post. I was generally brought up to think that rehab was a place I should not aspire to go to. And I’ll admit, even though I know James Frey was a big faker with A Million Little Pieces, I still drank seltzer with lime for a month after reading it whenever I went out — my plebeian version of rehab.

Nevertheless, rehab doesn’t seem to be doing these celebs any good — the process has become a ruse for attaining health and avoiding jail time. Read More »
