High School Shooting Tragedy Today in Ohio

One student is dead and four others are wounded following a shooting at an Ohio high school this morning. The shooter was taken into police custody after he turned himself in to bystanders. He is believed to be a student at Chardon High School, the suburban Cleveland school where the shooting took place. Chardon High is next to a middle school and across the street from an elementary school. Apparently, the gunman was chased out of the school by a teacher.

Our hearts go out to the Chardon community, and the families and friends of those students who were injured in the shooting. For more information, take a look at this CNN story about the incident.

Breaking News: Shots Fired at Virginia Tech

The HuffingtonPost just reported that shots have been fired on campus at Virigina Tech today. The shooter, who has already killed a police officer and possibly another victim, remains at large and is a white male reportedly wearing “gray sweat pants, gray hat w/neon green brim, maroon hoodie and backpack.” Campus officials have placed the entire campus community on lockdown until further notice.

Reports of a Shooting on the UC Berkeley Campus

Reports are just coming in that the UC police shot and wounded a gunman on the UC Berkeley campus around 3 PM PST. Luckily they arrived at the scene before anyone else was hurt and assured students that the campus was once again, completely safe.

This is just another scary reminder that college students don’t live in the safe and secure bubble that we think we do. That somehow, on the same campus where we go to class, meet our friends for coffee in the student center, and lay out on the quad, are dangerous people with loaded weapons.

While this obviously isn’t an everyday occurrence, it is a good wake-up call for every student to remember that a college campus is just like the real world and it’s just as important as it is in the real world to stay aware of what’s happening around us and take the same precautions that we would take anywhere else.
