The Weekly Ten: Crazy Cliffhangers

It’s official. It’s summertime.

Okay, so I know that technically it’s not officially summertime, that’s not until sometime in June, but for us college girls classes are over, finals are done, and summer is in session. And there’s lots of reasons to be happy about that (like the three bs: beaches, bikinis, and boys), but there are also a few downsides to the start of summer. Like the end of good TV, and the return of really, really bad reality TV. (Speaking of, when does Bachelor Pad start anyway?)

But at least they go out on a high note, you know? Those season finale cliffhangers are a killer, but they also make the show memorable and make sure we keep thinking about their show even when it’s not on. And it works. In fact, I’m still thinking about a few of my favorites.

10. Sex and the City Season Four. After one last perfect New York City night Carrie and Mr. Big part ways, with Mr. Big planning to move to Napa California, and Miranda gives birth to her baby. It’s the end of an era for these ladies, and it was for me too. Where would Sex and the City be without Mr. Big?

9. The OC Season Two. Just when we think Ryan and Marissa are finally going to get it together it all gets shot to hell. Literally. By Marissa herself. She didn’t mean to, though. She was just trying to save Ryan. But will that save Marissa Cooper from doing the time for her crime? Only time would tell.

8. Felicity Season One. Felicity. Remember when we all thought college was going to be like that? Finishing out our freshman year by trying to decide between two great guys: Noel or Ben? The questioned haunted us the entire summer. Oh, to be that cab driver. The guy with all the answers.

7. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Five. Buffy died. Buffy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer died. Before this moment viewers didn’t even think it was possible for someone to die when their name was in the title of the show. Lucky for us it didn’t stick, though.

6. Gossip Girl Season One. Dan and Serena split, and as if that weren’t depressing enough, disaster strikes twice. Minutes after Chuck and Blair finally get their acts together Chuck gets distracted by a leggy blonde and it all goes to hell? Cut to Blair flying off with a cute flight attendant and Chuck returning to his whoring ways. Ugh.

5. Vampire Diaries Season One. Damon almost dies in a fire, but is saved at the last minute thanks to Stephan, Bonnie, and Elena. An emotional wreck, Damon goes to Elena and pours his heart out. The two share a sweet moment and a hot kiss. It’s only then that we find out it wasn’t Elena at all. But Katherine. Damn doppelgangers.

4. Gilmore Girls Season Four. Lorelei and Luke finally get their four years in the making kiss and we’re left to figure out what that means over the summer. But the even bigger cliffhanger? Rory losing her virginity to her married ex-boyfriend and first love, Dean. I know, I was rooting for Jess too.

3. Friends Season Four. Rachel flies out to London to stop Ross’s wedding, only to realize at the last minute that she couldn’t do that to him. Resigned to loving him from afar Rachel stays for the wedding. Only to hear Ross say her name instead of Emily’s name. Uhoh.

2. Boy Meets World Season Five. What? Did you think that the moment Topanga gave up Yale and proposed to Cory at their high school graduation wouldn’t make the cut? Actually, it was one of the first scenes that came to my mind. Mr. Feeny announced them as the class of 1998 (God, we’re old) but Corny and Topanga remain seated. They were shocked into silence. And so were we.

1. Grey’s Anatomy Season Two. Meredith and Derek reunite for some slutty mistress action in the on call room. Denny dies. And Alex proves his undying devotion to Izzie. The real cliffhanger, though? Meredith standing between McDreamy and McVet unable to make a choice.

TV is Ending. Prepare Yourself

The end of spring semester means a few glorious things: spring weather (and the boys running shirtless that comes with it), porch cocktails and, duh, the end of school. But it also means a few not so glorious things: review sessions, study sessions, cram sessions, and the end of our favorite prime time TV shows.

Greek Returns: Remind Yourself Where We Left Off

One of the not so great things about the holiday season is the lack of good TV. Their logic is (or at least I think this is what it is) that we’ll all be too busy singing Christmas carols, buying presents, and getting too drunk to even think about our favorite shows. So they just play reruns. But they couldn’t have been more wrong, and that’s why I’m extra excited about Greek’s winter premiere tonight. Finally some good TV! And not only any show, but Greek, a show about college!

Granted, I doubt it’s an accurate portrayal of Greek life, but hey, it’s a start.

Or rather, it’s an end, because you see, this will be Greek’s final season. And I’m particularly sentimental about the ending of this show because just like the seniors of CRU are graduating and moving on with their lives, so am I. (Or at least I hope so.) This show started the summer before my freshman year, and now, four years later, it’s ending, right when I’m about to graduate, so you’ll excuse me if I seem a bit too emotionally invested in these characters, but we’ve been journeying together for quite some time now.

Before we get into the details, let’s get the basics straight. This show centers around Greek life at a fictional college, Cyprus-Rhodes, focusing on one sorority, Zeta Beta Zeta, and two fraternities, Kappa-Tau, and Omega-Chi. Oh, and the two fraternities hate each other. (Most of the time.)

Ashleigh is the president of Zeta Beta Zeta, and her best friend and roommate, Casey is also a member of ZBZ. They’re seniors. Rebecca, a frenemey, is a sophomore at ZBZ. She’s dating Evan, a senior, and the president of Omega Chi. Evan used to date Casey, but not before she dated his former friend, Cappie, president of Kappa Tau and Casey’s on and off again boyfriend. This past season they’ve been decidedly on. Also a member of Kappa Tau is Casey’s little brother and Cappie’s “little brother,” Rusty. He’s a bit of a nerd, who tries to balance his Greek life with his heavy course load. His religious, anti-fraternity BFF Dale helps keep him in check, as does Calvin, Rusty’s other BFF, a member of Omega Chi.

You confused yet?

Good. Let’s get down to the details. When we last left off, CRU’s favorite Greek guys and girls were on Spring Break attempting to figure out their future, and realizing that eventually, they were all going to grow up.

Except for Cappie, that is.

The proverbial Peter Pan, Cappie isn’t ready to grow up and leave college just yet (and hey, who could blame him). But Casey is; she has plans. You see, Casey wants to go to law school, but she was hoping to get into CRU law so she and Cappie could stay together She doesn’t. She does, however, get into George Washington Law, far away from CRU, and from Cappie. After lots and lots of agonizing, and a heart to heart with her bestie, Casey realizes that she can’t give up on her dreams to stay with Cappie. She has to go to George Washington Law.

But when she tells Cappie that she’ll be leaving after graduation and that she doesn’t want to do the long distance thing, Cappie breaks up with her right then and there. If they’re going to break up, he explains, why wait. They should just get it over with. Casey’s heart shatters (as does mine) and Cappie walks away.

It’s sad, but don’t worry, some happy stuff happens before that.

Evan and Rebecca get back together. The two were dating earlier on in the season, but broke up just as quickly just as things were starting to get serious. Fearing that a committed relationship might actually leave her vulnerable, Rebecca reacted the only way she knew how, by sleeping with another guy. When she gets caught, the two break up, and Rebecca is forced to deal with her intimacy issues. But after Rebecca asks for his forgiveness Evan gets over his pride and the two get back together, sealing the deal with a perfect kiss.

Rebecca didn’t head to Myrtle Beach looking for a guy, but she found one anyway. Of course, Ashleigh was looking for a guy, but instead she got something much better: a job offer. The closer Ashleigh got to graduation, the more she realized she had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. But after an inspirational speech (that would only work on TV) Ashleigh lands an internship in New York with trend forecaster Faith Flowers.

While Ashleigh is moving past college, Dale is only just embracing it, joining Calvin, Rusty, and Rusty’s new (non-sorority associated) girlfriend on Spring Break because he wants to enjoy himself and his college life. After all, he only has two years left. So Dale’s a little lost, but for once, Rusty isn’t. He’s happy with his girlfriend, his fraternity, and his place in the Honors Engineering program. Calvin too is pretty happy, despite his recent breakup with his just out of the closet fraternity brother, Grant. And that’s because he, Rusty, and the rest of the Kappa Tau brothers aligned to ensure he is voted the next president of Omega Chi, setting us all up for interesting final season.

GLEE Is Over. But Now There Are Books!

For all those who don’t know what to do with their Tuesday nights now that GLEE aired its season finale and you’ve spent the last 43 hours overplaying “Don’t Stop Believing’” on your iPod, have no fear!

In order to fill the void Jane Lynch and Jonathan Groff (swoon!) left in our hearts, the very brilliant creators behind GLEE (oh heyyy, Ryan Murphy) and Little Brown Books have teamed up to publish five, yes FIVE, prequel books titled “The Beginning” for our favorite GLEE characters.

So that means we’ll get to meet Rachel’s dads? And finally know why she’s got such a type-A personality? And Kurt’s styling secrets? And what Mr. Shu was like in high school?!

The only thing better than this would be a one-on-one date with Cory Monteith. Oh the things I’d do to him….

Gossip Girl: Jenny Humphrey Ruins Everything

I’d like to start this final GG recap by saying that I am lucky to be alive. Last night’s episode was total dramz from start to finish and not only was my heart racing, but at one point (involving a certain Humphrey and a super special Bass) I accidentally inhaled part of a cookie and had to pause the TV while I choked on it. My life flashed before my eyes and I promised God I’d never eat a sleeve of Chips Ahoy while watching TV again. When that chunky chocolate cookie chunk finally passed, I kept my promise. (The crunching was making it hard to hear the show, anyway.)

WHAT. A. FINALE.

Holy hell, the hits just kept on coming. First we discover Dan and Serena did a little lip-locking, then Jenny sells out her own bro in some evil plot to get Nate to love her perhaps we should send her a copy of “He’s Just Not That Into You”?), then Blair finds Jenny in Brooklyn and does probably the meanest thing she’s ever done.

“Nate loves Serena, Dan loves Vanessa, Chuck loves me, but you, no one loves you.” (Or something like that. I was too busy guffawing to really write the quote down.)

Buuuurn, Jenny.
But we’ll come back to that.

Anyways, Blair realizes she does want to be with Chuck, Dorota goes into labor (I won’t question why the entire UES showed up for that, or why Serena was dressed like a hooker [a gorgeous hooker, mind you] when she did), Blair leaves Dorota and takes Chuck up on his offer to meet at the top of the Empire State Building. In neon green shoes. OK, I get that they were Louboutin but NEON GREEN, Blair? Really?

When she gets to the top, Chuck isn’t there. Cue the tears/sneaking a cookie.

Meanwhile, across town, the biggest, most ridonkulous moment in Gossip Girl history is brewing. Jenny Humphrey and her split ends and Chuck Bass and his glass of scotch sit together on the couch. JENNY HUMPHREY AND CHUCK BASS START KISSING. JENNY HUMPHREY AND CHUCK BASS DO THE DIRTY!!

What. The. F**K? How can it be that anyone can come up with Chuck’s apartment at the hotel without being announced? Jenny did it, Blair did it, Georgina Sparks did it. You’d think homeboy would have more security. But that’s not the point. Back to JENNY AND CHUCK. OMG OMG OMG.

I understand why Chuck did it; he’s Chuck Bass.
I understand why Jenny did it; what Blair said resonated with her, she was lonely and just wanted to be with someone.
I just don’t understand why any of this surprised her. She was losing her virginity to Chuck Bass; was she expecting him to profess his love and invite her to move into the hotel with him? Was it really finding the ring (the big, perfect, gorgeous ring) that he bought for Blair that made her realize it was just sex?

More importantly, does Jenny have any idea how scary she looks when she’s crying with all that makeup on?

I hate Jenny more than ever now and I can’t wait for her to slum it out in Podunk Town, New York. I’d rather have Georgina and her baby (which I’m sure isn’t Dan’s baby, but is there a real baby in there at all?) than even catch Eric skyping with Jenny. She ruined my perfect Chuck/Blair moment. She hurt Chuck, the only person who still remotely cared about her. Did you see that look on his face? Yup, the tears started once again. Immediately followed by more cookies.

I think that hurt me more than my own most recent break up. Sad? Probably, but it’s not like I was dating Chuck Bass. It was more like I was dating a Justin Bobby.

And if that wasn’t enough, Chuck gets SHOT? And I’m just supposed to sit with that for four months until the show returns in the fall? Cue the sobs.

Those Gossip Girl writers really know how to pull a finale together. If The Bachelorette wasn’t starting next week, I’d be checking myself into a mental institution right now. Let the countdown to Gossip Girl’s return begin.

Deep Thoughts from The Jersey Shore

Tonight is the season finale of the Jersey Shore.

Let’s all take a moment of silence.

In preparation for this tragic ending I am beginning to practice the coping skills I learned from my therapist to use when dealing with a break-up. Because this is a break-up. A really painful one.

You see my relationship with The Jersey Shore began like any other meaningful relationship. I saw a preview and was interested. I didn’t know exactly what it would offer me, but it seemed attractive enough for me to find out. I committed to the first episode and was anxious to see how things would go, just like any first date. By the end…I was hooked.

I am the first to admit my own psychosis…I became a stage five clinger. I stalked The Jersey Shore by watching YouTube clips, looking for trailers, anything I could. Our relationship blossomed as I became more and more intrigued with each character and I felt as if I actually lived in the house and could call the Duck Phone my own. I found myself referring to the characters and constantly contributing my input to their lives. “Did you SEE that girl The Situation brought home? Even he could do better than that!”

Although I knew this relationship was toxic (to my brain, at least), I wasn’t willing to let go. And at the end of the day The Jersey Shore did offer me all of the wonderful things you would expect to get out of a relationship: I was entertained, always had a good laugh, and most importantly, it always made me feel good about myself. My flaws, however – that my skin is not orange and that my hair does not add 3 inches to my height – have caused The Jersey Shore to lose interest in me. Tonight will be our last date. And I am devastated.

But all is not lost.

The show may be going on hiatus until next year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hold onto and cherish the memories. So below, just a few of my favorite moments with my first true love, The Jersey Shore.

Living Lohan Ep 9: Season Finale

Oh Living Lohan, I can't believe our brief but tumultuous relationship is coming to an end (or a pause, you see, I'm not quite sure you've been renewed for a second season), but whatever, we've had our highs, our lows and our utterly brain numbing uneventful-s. I cherish our relationship so much, in fact, that I have elected to watch your season finale as opposed to THE PREMIER of Shark Week. I think this speaks volumes about my level of commitment to you. But I can't just let this--us--end, without discussing just how much you and I both have grown, as a blogger, and as a, um, TV show (embarrassing level of attachment much?)
Dina, throughout our relationship I've witnessed the true beauty/sheer terrifyingness of your momma lioness schtick. I've seen you go after those hoping to capitalize on your innocent 14 year old daughter. I've seen you thrust the aforementioned youth into the open arms of said users. But in the end, I know you swear up and down that both of your daughters are hard workers (hospitalizations for "exhaustion" and temper tantrums aside).
This week, you showed me how well you fulfill your role as Momager by springing upon Ali a last minute audition. I'm not sure how I feel about any movie that uses the name "Harry Potter JR" (for realz) for a character. But you allowed your youngest girl to exercise her independence this week! A MAJOR step for a recovering (ish) stage mom. I know you voiced your concern over whether she'll be judged for her natural abilities or her lineage. Nonetheless, you allowed Ali to go all by herself, to go meet the director of the film she's auditioning for. You successfully balance a life of partying with you eldest, raising your youngest, publicizing your private life for profit, and maintaining intricate (to say the least) hair, nails, and bronzer. I raise my (large) glass (of Sutter Home) to you Dina!
Nana, the beacon of truth, wisdom and-- let's face it-- common sense. Your unwavering support in your granddaughters exemplifies the fact that in Grandma's eyes, you can do no wrong. I was so very excited to see the return of Nana in this ep, after all the lewd and lacivious behavior that went down in your absence from Vegas (NOT). It was sweet to hear you call Linsday "composed", and reassuring to watch you accompany Ali on her big audition, even helping her run lines. I just want to let you know, Nana, that had I been born 40 years earlier and had my Mom, you know, not been born to completely different parents, I would totally have been your granddaughter. No prob. And I don't even have a substance abuse problem or a pseudo lesbian publicity plan!
Michael JR. I'm not really sure where you fit in, actually. I feel kind of like you found out this shiz was going down halfway through the season and then decided to drop in for some air time. But whatevs, this fair weather family member quality only adds to your perfectly cultivated essence of Long Island Douche (which, don't get me wrong, I'm totally into. My BF's a Plainview native, no joke!) Granted though, you do fulfill well your role of big bro...well enough to inspire heated jealousy in Dakota!
Which brings me to Cody-- my dear, beautiful, oh so jailbait worth little imaginary boyfriend.
While it starts out innocently enough (supersoaker ambush), it soon escalates into verbal abuse and frosting attacks on Nina, Cody's usurper of brotherly love. Before Michael is forced to choose between booty and bro, Nina capitalizes on Cody's time away from Michael to play a little ball with him. She tries to explain that she'll be an addition to his family, not a...um, subtraction. She promises him she'll never get between him and Michael, kisses him (bish please!) and tells him she loves him. She then brings the good tidings back to Michael, and all is well on the sibling front. Cody, your adorable, witty and spunky character has won my heart. Call me in 12 years. We'll talk.
And last (but sorta kinda least) Ali my dear, beautiful child. I feel like I've vicariously raised you through Ryan Seacrest productions! Well, actually no, because if you were my daughter you'd be less famewhoring and a little more into Limited Too or Camp Rock (no more Miley for my kids, not after this). I wish I could say that I've seen you grow, or that your character arc has increased in maturity, but at the end of the day you're still 14 and hell, you do handle a lot more than most girls your age. (Not once all season did you even go to a JoBro concert.)
Nonetheless, you exhibited the same sporadic maturity/immaturity that you have all season. Yes, you flipped a sh*t when Mom told you she had a script for you to screen test for the next day. But you sped read through that script, even though you were scared and uncomfortable. Not once did you question the awkwardness of rehearsing with your brother while he creepily hit on you (via script, of course.)
And on the day of your audition, even though you began the morning whining in bed, you did eventually go to meet that odd director. Did you question his wardrobe choice (a subtle "TROLLS" shirt, no promo!)? No. Did you squirm during his elaborate description of your character? Only a little. Did you leave immediately when, in regards to your reading, he told you "Make it delicious"? You should have.
But no! You soldiered on. You finished you audition, and as you drove away, the casting director actually chased down the car so Creepy McFacial Hair could tell you that you landed the role. And then, and then, you got your sister ON THE PHONE to say an entire TWO WORDS on the show she refused to appear on. If this doesn't scream success, Aliana, I just don't know what does.
And in the end, Ali's final mix of her first single "All the Way Around" plays to a warm fuzzy montage of some of the seasons key moments. After all we've been through LivLo--after inappropriately small dogs, after cute scheming, after Vegas, after Dina;s stage revival, AFTER JEREMY-- I finally feel like I'm ready to let go...until next season?



HIM!? DeAnna Gets Engaged On The Season Finale Of The Bachelorette

DeAnna said it best, “I cannot believe that I’m going to marry the guy with the pink shoelaces.”
I can’t either.
On tonight’s season finale of The Bachelorette, once jilted contestant DeAnna Pappas chose underdog pro-snowboarder Jesse over easy-going single-dad Jason. It was shocking to say the least, especially considering this episode.
The fellas went home to Georgia to meet DeAnna’s family. Jason wowed the Pappas’ with his intellect, charm and sincerity. Papa Pappas seemed to swoon himself. Meanwhile, even with a new haircut, everyone was a little perplexed over just how Jesse got this far in the competition. I couldn’t help thinking the same thing. Jesse seems like a great guy but I just didn’t see the chemistry.
DeAnna planned on joining the boys in the Bahamas but Jeremy requested a sit-down. You remember Jeremy right? The robotic, stiff, chiseled lawyer from Texas who got cast off last week. It was such an awkward meeting. I didn’t know it was customary for jilted bachelors to deman an audience with The Bachelorette. It’s like Sanjaya sitting down with Simon Cowell; You’re out. It sucks. Deal with it. After some mopey hand-holding and copious tears, Jeremy finally departed. Was this last-ditch effort a chance to secure a place as the next Bachelor? I hope not. I don’t think I could watch him again.
So she sees hangs out with the guys one last time in the Bahamas. The guys shop for rings, get cleaned up, and get ready to propose. Jason goes as far as getting down on one knee before DeAnna pulls him up and breaks his heart. Jason was nothing but gracious in the after-show. He was respectful, kind and optimistic about the future. I’m sure he’ll find love somewhere too…just not on The Bachelor I hope.
Jesse’s proposal was cute. He appeared nervous, excited and kind of adorable. For the first time I sort of saw what the fuss was about. Plus he finally found an attractive hair cut. The deal was sealed when DeAnna said tearfully, “I would not be okay if you were not in my life.” Well it’s hard to argue with that.

Musings of a Television Addict, Or, Season Finales Are Mentally Exhausting

So last week was truly the end of our television season, and off we go into the doldrums of summer programming. But first, let’s look back at the wonderful ways our favorite shows wrapped up.
Gossip Girl: I’m proud of the writers of this show for making some sort of reasonable denouement to the ridiculous things they put their characters through this season: Georgina got conveniently sent off to a reform school, everyone broke up, and they not-so-subtly planted the seeds for new couples.
I spent the hour deciding who I would rather want to be: Blair or Vanessa. Once Blair got on the plane with a smoking hot corporate flacky, my doubts were crushed.
How I Met Your Mother: Was anyone else a little disappointed by this episode? I mean, come on people, it’s the season finale, and I laughed out loud maybe twice. Proposal blah blah blah, car accident, whatever. The only thing that made me happy was Barney’s epiphany in full body cast. Robin and Barney as a couple would be the best combination ever.
American Idol: Some guy named David Cook won. Good for him. I didn’t watch a minute of this season, other than the clips of Andrew Lloyd Webber creepily coaching the male contestants.
So You Think You Can Dance: I’m so glad my favorite summer show has taken the void left after The Office ended. However, the audition episodes are my least favorite part of the whole thing. The only person that really wowed me last night was this guy. HOLY CRAP. Is he even human?
Ugly Betty: Another season finale. Jeez. Once again, not super impressed. I think I’m going to stop watching this show soon, it’s just getting repetitive and boring. I loved the Naomi Campbell jabs though, and the gayest softball game ever. Wonder if those people actually worked at Elle? Or maybe I just want the sad people in publishing to get their fifteen minutes of glory.
Grey’s Anatomy: Sometimes I think Grey’s Anatomy is ridiculous and over-dramatic and tedious. However, last night I was mollified into watching by a friend. And while the concrete storyline was SO far-fetched, I cried like a little baby when those two teenagers were saying goodbye to each other. That was some good writing right there.

The Musings of a Television Addict: The Ends and the Beginnings

It’s a good time to be a TV fan, girls. Other than the incredibly disappointing resurfacing of Britney in How I Met Your Mother, things are going well. A couple television tidbits for your perusing pleasure:
* Renewals for shows I love: How I Met Your Mother and Reaper. YAY! People, this is good comedy right here. If you aren’t already tuning in, you should be.
*Speaking of How I Met Your Mother, the websites mentioned on this week’s episode are real and functioning. You can buy set pieces and items from Lily’s ridiculously cute wardrobe at this auction site. All proceeds go to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. In addition, www.GuyForcesHisWifeToDressInAGarbageBagForTheNextThreeYears.com is not only the longest URL ever, it is bizarre and wonderful. Details like this make me love this show.
*Season finales are upon us, with Scrubs and 30 Rock ending last week, and the majority of other shows finishing up this week. And while I mourn the passing of some of my favorites, I’m distracted by the awesomeness that I’m sure The Office will deliver this Thursday. My predictions? Cliffhangers galore: including a Dwight/Angela coupling behind Andy’s back, Jan using a possibly fake pregnancy to reel Michael back in, and a Jim/Pam proposal. Too far fetched? Maybe. But if I’m right you’ll bow down to my fabulous and mystical clairvoyance. Post your own predictions in the comments!
*In other wonderful Office related news, Steve Carell is hosting the SNL season finale this weekend! However, because I can’t have anything go smoothly in my life, this episode will also be Amy Poehler’s last. WHY!? Kristen Wiig can’t hold up this show on her own, woman! Screw the pregnancy! STAY WITH MEEEEE…..I’m sorry about that. I have an unhealthy adoration for Amy Poehler. But can you blame me?
*To smother my sorrow, I’m going to re-immerse myself in the new season of So You Think You Can Dance, which premiers in two weeks! My favorite thing about this show? Figuring out which male contestants are straight, gay, or hopelessly closeted. (Hint: it’s usually one of the last two.) But if you tune in for the spectacular dancing, more power to ya!
