When our male pal over at Coed and I were chatting about topics for this week’s column, he proposed “favorite sex positions.” I enthusiastically agreed. (“HELL YA, MO FO!”) I mean, what could be easier than whipping up an article on a topic that I talk about at length with my best friends? And by “at length” I mean “in inappropriate detail to the point that we make everyone around us at brunch feel highly uncomfortable.” Keep the strollers away, people!

The only problem is, it’s been so long since I took a trip on the Pleasure Train that at this point, any sex position would be my favorite. Well, any one besides “do it yourself.” Because that got old. 3 months ago.

So, yeah, this turned out to be a little harder than I thought it would be…and a whole lot harder than getting a drunk frat boy to perform. (Which is damn near impossible, am I right, ladies??! Zingerrrr.)

But here goes nothing…

Below, my 5 favorite sex positins…from what I can remember…from the days I was actually getting’ some.

Missionary. I know, I know. Booooring. But when you think about it, it’s not. There’s nothing more intimate than having someone you feel strongly about so physically close to you. He can whisper in your ear, you can affectionately run your hands through his hair, and there’s nothing hotter than running your nails down your guy’s back in the heat of the moment. (At least that’s what I’ve come to understand over the years…) Plus, when you’re tired, you don’t have to do…anything. Is there anything else on earth that can bring you such pleasure with so little work? No, no there is not.

Girl on top. If you can ignore the whole “boobs flopping all around” thing (which I can, because I don’t have any), girl on top is the bomb.com. Guys LOVE the whole full-frontal view and I love it because I am in total control. Wanna get done quickly? Speed up, sister. Want to tease him a little? Move slowly and, if you dare,  pull yourself off of him completely to drive. Him. Crazy. Bonus: your hair looks HOT flowing over your shoulders.

Girl on top…on the couch. A nice little change of scenery, you got something to hold onto, and you get the intimacy of missionary and the control of standard girl on top.

Legs behind your head. The way it tilts your body up, it just feels better. A lot better. Enough said.

I used to be pretty anti-anal. The idea of a foreign object being inserted into my butt held less than zero appeal. I was worried about the pain. I thought it was only for gay men and that most straight women only did it because their boyfriends kept begging for it. But as I became more experienced and open-minded (and started voraciously reading sex blogs), anal started to become more and more intriguing and less intimidating. Anal play is not relegated to small niche subsets of the population – many women actively enjoy anal play for a variety of reasons.

1. Some of us are submissive. We enjoy relinquishing control in the bedroom and being dominated by our partner. Anal sex is generally considered one of the most vulnerable sex acts, and for many women who enjoy exploring their submissive nature, giving access to their rear entry is one of the strongest expressions of their desire to please their partner (though this in no way means that submission means ignoring your own wishes and setting your own boundaries).

2. Some of us crave a lot of spice. We all have default positions we fall back on because they never fail to get us off. But at the same time, sometimes it gets a little stale. Throwing in a scandalous position occasionally breaks up the monotony.

3. Some of us want to explore yet another erogenous zone. Though we don’t have a prostate like guys, the butt is full of nerve endings, and anal play stimulates those in a way that can be incredibly pleasurable.

If you’re interested in trying anal, here are the 5 things I think you should definitely know:

1. Lube is your absolute best friend. It’s almost impossible to have “too much lube” when anal play is on the table. The anus is not elastic, and it doesn’t naturally produce lubrication. You want whatever the thing is – an anal toy, a finger, a dildo, a penis, whatever – to glide in and out with no friction. Silicone based lubes are the most recommended, because they’re longer lasting and don’t get sticky.

2. Start small and start slowly. This may seem like a no-brainer, but seriously. Use a (well-lubed) finger, anal beads, or a small butt plug to get your body used to something entering your exit zone. This will prepare you for something bigger, but it will also ease any anxiety you may have once you become familiar with the sensations on a smaller scale. Make sure your partner goes slow and gradually. This is a sensitive area that is generally not conducive to jackhammering (at least not the first several times).

3. Be mindful of hygiene. Never go immediately from the booty to the vag, as that could lead to extremely unpleasant vaginal infections. If you are being penetrated by a male, absolutely use a condom. Though you can’t get pregnant via anal, you can still contract an STD.

4. Talk through it. Communication is absolutely essential to a good (or, at least, not traumatizing) anal experience. If you are uncomfortable, speak up. If you want to try a different angle, suggest it. If your partner is going too fast/being too aggressive, let them know. If you feel nauseous or physically uncomfortable, you are well within your rights to speak up. Don’t be embarrassed if it turns out you hate it. By keeping the lines of communication open, you can proceed to have an awesome experience you’ll want to repeat, or you can have a not great experience but then go on to try something else that may more to your liking.

5. Relax! Naturally, you’re going to tense up, but breathe and remember that you can stop it whenever you want to. It helps to have an orgasm or be exceptionally aroused before you start, because your body is in a calmer, more welcoming state.

I’m not going to go so far as to say every woman should try anal once in her life. I wouldn’t do it if you’re not enthusiastic about it. If you only do it for the sake of your partner, and you truly have no interest in it at all, it is probably going to suck. Sometimes you just know if you’re not feeling something before you try it, and that’s totally fine. But anal does have a stigma attached to it, and I want to do my part to help destigmatize a perfectly normal, safe and potentially fun sexual adventure.

Hell, I’ve made it through 174.5 of the positions in “Sex 365 – A Position for Every Day” (the half was due to an ill timed Charley horse that left my partner bleeding profusely from the nose…) and I’ve even dabbled in a little role playing.

I’ve been looking for a cure for my problem for months.  Why can’t I just relax, sit back, and enjoy? Type 2: Screwing

I go through phases where I listen to different podcasts on a fairly obsessive basis. It was during one of these phases that I stumbled upon a podcast called Sex, Love, and Intimacy (on which our lovely editor did an interview, the same interview that introduced me to CollegeCandy in the first place). As you guys may have noticed, I  have a lot of respect for people who do the job that I hope one day to do myself (you know, like how often I talk about Dan Savage…), and I tend to quote them a lot. Chip August, the host of Sex, Love, and Intimacy had a slogan that has stuck with me long after the podcast ended – “sex is more than just a piece of skin, a piece of skin, wiggle wiggle pop.”

Oh, how true that is.  There’s more to sex than just the act – the in and out, the build up and the orgasm. There’s more than the positions. No, I’m not going into the emotions and love and meaning behind sex. Not gonna lie, I don’t even know what to call the thing I’m talking about; style? Type? Intensity? But bear with me, I will explain:

Making Love:
As much as I hate that phrase (oh, how I despise it so), it’s really the only way to describe it. Those intimate sessions that are usually slow and loving. More about feeling everything than the climax. While love-making may not be hottest or most passionate, or even the sexiest, it is definitely the most intimate.

Screwing:
Okay, in reality I would call this type of sex f*cking, but I have a problem with censoring my words, so we’re just going to call it screwing for all intents and purposes, and you guys can follow along with what I really mean. I find this tends to be the favorite for college-aged guys. It’s the least intimate (generally, not saying having a good screw can’t be loving), and usually the most intense. You know, sweaty and loud, and being thrown all over the place. It’s usually just about getting off, but since when is that a bad thing?

The happy-medium:
When I’ve described this “3-kinds-of-sex” theory to different partners, this particular “type” is usually just labeled something along the lines of “plain old sex.” Maybe it’s vanilla, or maybe it’s just not as steamy as screwing, but this tends to be the fall-back for most couples. It’s the middle between making love and screwing, usually takes the least effort, and produces the results expected out of some good ol’ fashioned sex.

The trick to a sustainable sex life isn’t just mixing up the positions and introducing some sexy toys (though that helps too), it can be as easy as just mixing up the “style.” Sometimes the mood strikes to be um.. pounded, and sometimes the mood strikes to have fingers-intertwined and love and romance. And sometimes, it’s just sex to get the job done.

As a writer, I have a lot of role models. People who’ve made a difference with their writing, people who’ve paved the way, and people whose writing I just really enjoy. One of those people is sex columnist Dan Savage. Not only does he write a sex advice column that’s syndicated all over North America, but he’s also written a few books and still manages to be a fairly down-to-earth guy.

One of the things that Dan talks about pretty frequently in his column is the idea of being GGG – good, giving and game in the sack. According to Dan, these are the three traits a person needs to sustain a long and healthy sexual relationship.

I’ve been asking myself lately how exactly one goes about being GGG in a relationship — what does it actually mean? It seems like a pretty good concept, so let me break it down for you guys too:

Good – not everyone comes by sexual talent naturally, and it’s unreasonable to think that your first time doing something is automatically going to be awesome. Being good involves lots of practice. Sexually, everyone has strong points and weak points. To reach your “maximum potential” in bed, it’s important to ask your partner what they want. If it’s not something you’re familiar with, ask for tips, try your best and practice, practice, practice!

Giving – being good at something is only the first step. You’ve gotta put that into action! Being in a relationship means you’ve gotta be willing to put your partner’s needs ahead of your own from time to time.  Sex involves two (or more) people, so focusing only on yourself just isn’t going to fly. In order to maintain a long-term sexual relationship, both partners need to feel that they’re getting what they need.

Game – nothing is better than a little enthusiasm. Sex should never make your partner feel like you’re doing them a favor. While your partner’s kink may not be one of yours, giving into that from time to time enthusiastically (within reason, of course) is going to get you some major bonus points in the sex department. Even if it’s not necessarily your cup of tea, being enthusiastic and willing to try new things will go a long way. Not into certain positions? Give them a try every once in a while if it’ll make your partner happy – and fully expect them to do the same for you.

Like everything else in a relationship, being GGG goes both ways. Being good, giving and game for your partner should be returned with them being GGG for you. Nothing says I love you like a round of good, enthusiastic, giving sex.
