LC’s ex is back in the news…

You may have guessed from the title that I have a short boyfriend. He doesn’t like to be called “short,” but it can’t be denied—at 5’8”, he’s exactly the same height I am, and if I wear heels with even a little bit of height, he suddenly becomes a dwarf.

And yes, that’s OK with me. So I’m kind of perplexed as to why so many of you answered the CC poll question a few weeks back by saying that you’d never date a guy shorter than you are.

That seems awfully judgmental to me. Yeah, it’s fine to have preferences about the people you date—I do prefer taller guys, to be completely honest—but shutting a whole class of guys out of your dating pool is only doing you a disservice. Who knows? Maybe that gorgeous, funny, classy, considerate guy you’ve been secretly dreaming about all these years is actually that short guy standing over there in the corner at the bar. Maybe not… but you’ll never know unless you chat him up and find out.

Here’s my theory: short guys have had to put up with a lot of crap throughout their lives. Unless you’re a short guy living in China or somewhere else where a majority of the population is relatively diminutive, you’ve had to withstand a barrage of teasing about your size throughout your formative years. That builds a thick skin and also helps develop a healthy sense of humor. It’s unfair to a short guy when you name his size as a reason why you won’t date him—I mean, that’s just cruel.

And please don’t give me any crap about how you’d “have to lean down in order to kiss him, and that would be sooooo awkward,” because how do you think tall guys kiss short girls? Yeah. If they can lean forward a little bit, so can you.

And then, out of no where, the conversation turned sour.

I don’t remember how we got there, but for some incomprehensible reason, the conversation led him to say this:

BOYFRIEND: Well, you do have a little tummy.

He unwisely pats my tummy.

ME: (turning into a shrieking monster) WHAT?!

BOYFRIEND: No, I love it! It’s cute!

ME: IT’S CUTE THAT I’M FAT?!

BOYFRIEND: No! No, that’s not what I meant! It’s just that you’re getting older–

ME: WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!??!!??!!

Now, if I’m going to be 100% honest, I will have to say that he really did not mean this in a mean way. He meant that we’re comfortable together and he likes that I don’t obsessively watch what I eat anymore, and he did not mean that I’m some gargantuan fatty fat fat (I wear a size 4). But he’s right. I do have a little tummy.

And, of course, he’s right. I am getting older.

Now, at 23, that shouldn’t be a big deal. But for some reason it is.

In fact, I just read an entire issue of Allure that was about making yourself look younger.

Let me preface this by saying that I get carded everywhere I go. I have been asked, in the past two months, what grade I’m in. I am short and I am young-looking.

However, I find myself being sensitive to the idea of physical aging. I found a white hair last year and I yanked that motherf*cker out. I have begun, after years of paying no attention to my skin whatsoever, wearing moisturizer.

And although fashion magazines and the media and whatever may seem the obvious source of blame, I think it’s got more to do with my (and most people’s) family.

Am I worried about getting older and not getting married and not having kids in a timely manner? I’m confused about the timing of career/marriage/kid in an age where it’s appropriate to wait to have a family until your mid-thirties, but when I’m in my mid-thirties, my parents will be in their mid-60s. And I was raised to believe that my parents deserve–nay, are OWED–grandchildren.

So maybe I think if I stay slim and line-free, other aging issues will just resolve themselves.

Anyone else having this less-than-quarter-life crisis?

Being short, it’s almost impossible to find jeans that look good. Most of the time, designers completely bypass the possibility that anyone buying their stuff is under 5’9”, thus making it impossible for a petite individual to know if she’s wearing them the right way.

Of course, once I finally find a pair that isn’t 7 inches too long, the first question I always ask myself is, does my ass look good in this?

My thoughts must have been loud enough to echo across the canyons of Arizona, because an upscale jeans shop in Scottsdale recently introduced The Buttcam.

The camera, positioned in just the right place in a dressing room so shoppers can gaze up at a TV screen showing their ass, was the brainchild of one of the co-owners of the store. After watching people twist and turn to see if their backside were looking hot or not, the shop owner decided to help a sister out. Shoppers at the store can now see themselves in their entire glory, and even have an image of their ass above the cash registers, should they be so proud.

As long as those images stay away from freaky dudes on their computers, I say all hail the Buttcam. May it help women (and men) everywhere avoid the saggy ass jean, and allow us all to get up-close and personal with our backsides.
