Another day, another Bieber story. But this time, he’s not being accused of impregnating a random woman or having terrible hair. He has a new single! It’s called “Boyfriend.” You know, so that all the little 12 year old girls who are obsessed with Justin Bieber can pretend he’s singing it just for them.

I’ve never been a Bieber fan (cue the angry comments), but I think he’s reached a new level of awful with this song. In the intro, he makes sort of an attempt at rapping, but it’s more like a male version of the Ke$ha sing-talk. And then he starts singing, and from there the song pretty much turns into a Jesse McCartney ripoff.

Some sample lyrical gems: “I could be a Buzz Lightyear, fly across the globe.” Come on Beibs. If I wanted a plastic doll for a boyfriend, obviously I would choose Ken. Oh, and also this: “If I was your man…” Wait, didn’t you just turn 18? LOL. Honey, you are nobody’s “man.”

Sigh. Justin Timberlake, where have you gone?! Please come back and save us from this.

Have you ever been stuck in a funk that, even though your friends are concerned and your finals are creeping up, you really just don’t want to get out of it just yet? Like you just want to crawl into your Snuggie with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and while listening to a song that articulates your inexpressible feelings so perfectly?

Let me tell you, as a newly single girl, I know the feeling. I thought I practically invented this ritual until I realized that this guy named Brandyn Burnette is actually exploiting it by mashing together two of the most overplayed tracks on my “Feel Sorry for Myself” playlist.

Burnette released the video for ‘Rain Over You’—a mashup of ‘It Will Rain’ by Bruno Mars (from the Breaking Dawn soundtrack) and Gavin Degraw’s ‘Not Over You.’ He’s an NYU student who’s already made Internet waves with viral covers of Demi Lovato and Lil Wayne, and thankfully, he’s signed to Warner Bros Records and currently working on his debut album.

I know you are probably sick of CollegeCandy writers telling you to hop on the self lovin’ train (not in the masturbation sense), but I’m having a week of self-hate, so you’re just going to have to grin and bear one more person telling you that you are awesome. Think you can deal?

As of this very second I’m in on of those “between guys” stages. Which shouldn’t be a huge deal, I mean come on I’m successful (as a nanny), I’m fun (my Zumba instructor thinks so), and pretty (at least that’s what my mom says). Maybe it’s because my summer months were full of flings and now the fall lull has set in leaving me alone, or maybe it’s because the heat in my building doesn’t work (but a warm body would). Whatever the reason I’m starting to go down to a deep, dark, horrible, seventh grade kind of place.

The kind of place where reading an unpleasant comment makes me want to hide under the covers all day. Where I continually remind myself how imperfect I am, and that my current crush will never like me (I realize I sound like a 10-year-old, get over it). I hate this me, I’m normally a happy, upbeat, kind of chick. So this whole “woe is me” crap is getting kind of old,especially for everyone I live with.

I’ve never wanted a relationship. I mean, I’m 19 years old, why should I? Now, dating, that’s where it’s at. But I keep finding myself in sticky situations. I’ll be seeing a guy and he’ll bring up the “exclusive” conversation when, wait a second, weren’t we diggin’ this whole casual thing two dates ago? What changed?

I guess my problem is that I’m always the bad guy. I don’t intend to hurt anyone and I make sure I’m communicating that I don’t want a boyfriend right now. But growing up, my brother was a real player and I refused to be some clingy girl who relied on the opposite sex only to be lied to, cheated on or disrespected, like many of his girlfriends.

Ah, you’ve discovered the secret: guys love it when we play hard to get.

See?! SEE?! It’s true!!! Peeps be saying, ‘Hey you should sleep with him and he’ll want a relationship’; and I be saying, ‘No way, girl – you want him to stick around you play hard to get!”

Well, okay. I don’t say that EXACTLY. But, I mean, the idea is there: Guys hate it when girls are clingy, and they react when girls give them the cold shoulder. HOWEVER! That is because guys, like girls, LIKE PEOPLE, get insecure. Like, super easy. Especially when it comes to dating.

You see, C-C (may I call you C-C?), what happens is it goes like this:

C-C: Yeah, let’s just be casual.

GUY: But–but–don’t the stereotypes go that girls always want to be in a relationship?!

C-C: Mmmmnnnnyeah, I don’t think so. Let’s just date.

GUY: WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME?!

C-C: Um, I gotta go–

GUY: LOVE ME LOVE ME LOVE ME!!!!!!!

Right. So, like, you don’t want that.

Girl, look. You are absolutely right: You should NOT be dependent on some guy. And you should only get into a relationship when YOU want to, because YOU actually LIKE the guy. And, for the record, you are SO NOT the bad guy. You’re being totally honest with them. And that’s very cool.

However, it does concern Aunt Tuffy that you NEVER want to be in a relationship. I wonder if maybe you’re acting tough and shoop to protect yourself (damn you, older bro!!) and you’re not letting yourself  be juuuuust vulnerable enough to actually get to know someone who might actually make you happy.

So, honey, here’s what I think. You should date, date, date to your heart’s content (ALWAYS USE PROTECTION!!! CONDOMS EVERY TIME, FOR EVERY KIND OF SEXUAL ACTIVITY!!!). But you should leave yourself open. If you find yourself getting really interested in a guy, and then he asks about being exclusive–well, stay open to saying okay.

Exclusivity is not permanent, you know. It’s not like he’s your boyfriend and OMG THAT’S THE END. You can always, you know, break up. So NOT a big deal.

Love is good, m’kay?! So don’t just write every single guy off who likes you just because you’re afraid of getting hurt.

But, I mean, I hear the price of cat food is going down. So that’s cool.

With three words I’ve probably caused every single reader to groan in frustration. You’re probably trying to forget this day exists, aren’t you? Trying to pretend this is just a normal Monday.

Well it’s not. Today is Valentine’s Day. And single or coupled, or complicated, Valentine’s Day is a day worth celebrating. (Hello, we spent an entire week trying to get that point across!) You cannot escape the mayhem that surrounds this day. You cannot ignore it. You cannot hide from it. So you might as well embrace it. And here’s why…

10. Those valentines you used to get as a little kid. You know what I’m talking about. You probably have a whole bunch of them saved somewhere. The ones that have your favorite cartoon characters on them. The ones with too much lace and cheesy sayings. The ones you loved then and still love now.

9. Chocolate. Not only is it delicious, but apparently it’s also good for you. And Valentine’s Day is one of very few holidays when you can eat an entire box of chocolate truffles without getting strange looks, whether you bought them for yourself or they’re a gift from your beau.

8. Conversation candy hearts. You know those cute, multicolored, heart shaped sugar cubes that have flirty little sayings on them. When I was younger I use to pick through the bag of them searching for my favorites. Be mine. Txt me. True Love. You rock. I was always a fan of Cutie Pie. What about you?

7. That Ashton Kucher movie. Valentine’s Day. A sad impersonation of Love Actually? Yes. An overstuffed celebrity cast? Sure. But Ashton and Jen’s sweet kiss? Jessica Alba checking into a hotel with her dog? Jessica Biel beating the candy out of a heart shaped piñata for single girls everywhere?  Eric Dane and Bradley Copper in love? Totally makes this movie a worthy watch. It even made Taylor Swift’s “Today Was a Fairy Tale” totally listenable. Which reminds me…

6. Taylor Swift’s music suddenly doesn’t seem so cheesy. While I admit to having sung along to “Better Than Revenge” on more than one occasion, I often find Taylor’s more romantic songs to be a bit too cheesy for my tastes. But not on Valentine’s Day. Nothing says love quite like “you’re the best thing that’s ever been mine.”

5. It’s the perfect excuse for a night out. Romantic dinner with your significant other or a fun night out with your girls. Tons of restaurants have Valentine’s Day specials that aren’t just for couples. So pull a Carrie and Miranda and head out to dinner on Valentine’s Day night with your best girlfriends and be each other’s valentines. Plus, it requires you buy that…

4. Sparkly new dress. You know, the one you’ve been eying for months now. The one you visit at the mall weekly. The one you want so badly, but you don’t have anywhere to wear it. Well, now you do. Wear it to Valentine’s Day dinner. Bonus points if it’s red or pink.

3.  Red nail polish. Red-red or orange red? Doesn’t really matter as long as it’s red. Step away from the neutral color palette for the day, that nail polish color that you always go back to because it goes with everything, and rock those red nails. My personal choice? Sally Hansen’s Complete Salon Manicure, Right Said Red. What’s yours?

2. The Glee episode. If there were ever a reason to change your opinion on Valentine’s Day, it would be the Valentine’s Day Glee episode that aired last Tuesday. Listen to Kurt sing “Silly Love Songs,” to Puck rock out to “Fat Bottomed Girls” or to Rachel’s tribute to single girls everywhere, as she belted out “Firework.” Watch Finn kiss every girl in the school. And then tell me you hate Valentine’s Day. Okay?

1. It’s a celebration of love. But not just couple love, familial love, love among friends, or pets, or coworkers. It’s a celebration of you and anyone you care about. It’s a chance to say “Hey, I’m glad you’re in my life,” to just about anyone who matters. So celebrate Valentine’s Day, even if you’re Facebook status doesn’t say “In a Relationship.” (And” celebrate” does not mean “pity party,” ladies!)

And as I sat down to revel in their renditions of Michael Jackson and Katy Perry’s greatest hits, I was glad to see that the writers had kept Lauren Zizes around even after sectionals. And even more so, I was glad to see that she had a pretty large part in this past Tuesday’s episode.

Here at CollegeCandy we love Glee not just for its cute but oh so dumb boys and awesome musical numbers, but also for what’s at the heart of the show: being true to one’s self. Embracing who you are, strengths and weaknesses, the good and the bad, and taking pride in that. These characters are all underdogs in one way or another but being in Glee helps them to remember who they are, and to be okay with that.

But Lauren Zizes doesn’t need Glee club to help her break out of her shell. She’s a confident, independent, strong, badass woman, and she owns that. And that’s why Puck is crushing on her.

And it’s why we are too.

Because Lauren Zizes isn’t the type of character you encounter on TV every day. Yes, we see strong women, and yes we see “fat girls.” But what we don’t see is a “fat girl” who knows exactly who she is and what she wants, who’s not riddled with insecurities, and afraid to speak her mind. A girl who is confident enough in her body and in herself to not settle for just anyone or anything. She tells Puck, “I’m not desperate so if you really want this you best come correct ’cause I spell woman Z-I-Z-E-S. And I need to be wooed. You understand me? Wooed.”

She’s not going to fall at his feet just because he’s suddenly decided to look her way. He has to earn it, and if he doesn’t want to, she’s okay with that too. And that’s awesome. She likes Puck but she’s also confident enough to know she wants a real relationship and she’s not going to settle for anything less. So they can take it slow, or not at all, and that’s fine with her, because she’s not afraid of being alone.

Which is more than what can be said about Rachel who’s too concerned with Finn to remember she’s a star all on her own, and Quinn who can’t figure out who she is or what she wants if she’s not the Queen B with the star quarterback on her arm. Or even Santana who can’t seem to fathom the idea of being alone on Valentine’s Day. In fact, the only girl on Glee who might rival Lauren in self confidence is Mercedes, who spends the majority of the episode reminding Rachel and Kurt that they don’t need to be in a relationship to be happy.

So thanks, Glee. For providing us with a unique, new, and interesting female character. For reminding us what your show is really about. And for remembering that even though “being a part of something special makes you special” you can still be special all on your own.

Being single on Valentine’s Day is not fun. Hallmark doesn’t want it to be, all of the couples on the planet don’t want it to be, and those big teddy bears staring at you buying the 2nd Season of Gossip Girl to consume your evening DEFINITELY don’t want it to be.   As much as we single chicks try to make it better, constantly letting the thoughts run silk blankets all over our minds (“You’ll have someone next year, you’re beautiful, you’re the best!”) and letting honey Teddy Grahams absorb the sadness – we can’t.  The pity party must be thrown.  And the party must go on.

However, like a sad graduation party, there are ways you can be there for yourself and make it better. And I’m not talking about getting hammered on the booze in your parents’ liquor cabinet. You wanna make it out of this day without self-loathing and 5 extra pounds on your thighs unscathed? Listen up:

1. Don’t rent rom-coms.
Seriously, don’t you think rom-coms are bad enough on a normal day, like Feb. 15th?  Why would anyone ever want to put themselves in a position where they have to watch Ryan Reynolds fall in love, date, and tell a cute story in Definitely Maybe?  I’m thinking I definitely won’t.  A rom-com is the strong gust of wind to fuel the pity fire of singledom on Valentine’s Day.  Put away the matches, single ladies.  Watch a Hannibal movie – or one of the eighty creations of Saw.

2. Do get drunk.
Nothing wrong with a little night cap to sign off your evening of sorrow.  No one is going to judge you on Valentine’s Day if you tip a few back, and no one is going to judge you if you tip a few back while listening to Leona Lewis and eating powdered sugar donut holes.

3. Don’t drunk dial.
The only thing worse than a rom-com marathon? Bringing your phone out with you while you get your drink on. “Why can’t you love me like Ryan Reynolds loves that cute red head in DefMaybes???? WHY!?!? TELL ME!?!? So don’t do it. Spend the night with your V-day date, Jose Cuervo, but hide the cell phone.

4. Do hang out with your single ladies.
This is a MUST DO. Your single ladies are the ones who will understand where you’re coming from, won’t judge your relationship flaws, and will sit there with you and dish the sh*t for as long as need be.  People feel better in groups.  With your single ladies, you feel like you belong and that you are not the only one that spends five out seven days a week Googling ‘guys with puppies’ and eating lime sherbet mixed with pineapple juice….What? Only me?

5. Do go to Justin Bieber in 3D.
I’m serious about this.

6. Don’t go out to dinner at a nice restaurant.
You don’t need to surround yourself with people who are going to be slobbering on each other and reading candy hearts out loud and in public. In fact, don’t go anywhere couples will be (i.e. movie theaters, mini-golf courses, steakhouses, the grocery store, your driveway).  Just don’t leave your apartment.  Come to think of it, don’t even go to work. Call in “single.” Unless you want to sit there pouting at the onslaught of flowers everyone seems to be receiving but you.

7. Do Facebook stalk the couples you hate the most.
You know what I’m talking about; the couple that keeps sharing pictures of puppies from The Humane Society on their wall to wall.  The ones that count down until the days they can see each other again (even though, according to a previous countdown, they’d seen each other a week ago).  The ones who have matching kissy profile pics, who tell each other how much they love each other via status message and who generally make you wanna barf. There’s something therapeutic about tearing those people apart….whilst eating Reese’s hearts.

Speaking of which…

8. Don’t feel bad about eating an entire box of chocolates.
And half a peanut butter jar….nachos…..bag of HeartMallows (marshmallows in the shape of demeaning hearts)….a bottle of White Zin….your hand…
