My Life As A Vegetarian

Up until I was 19-years-old, I lived my life as a happy carnivore. I ate meat daily, just like most people do. I always preferred a plate of vegetables over a hot dog, but I never really imagined cutting it out of my life entirely. And then I read a book called Skinny Bitch, discovered what apparently really goes on in slaughter houses, and changed everything about my eating habits.

If you’ve never heard of Skinny Bitch, it’s  a really popular book by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. The authors are two strict vegans trying to educate readers about how to live a healthier lifestyle. One day I was eating bacon with breakfast, chicken for lunch and steak for dinner, and the next, I was reading a paragraph about what was found in meat in slaughterhouses. When I was finished reading, I immediately went home and announced to my family that my meat-eating days were officially over. In the span of two hours, I decided to cut red meat and chicken out of my life for good.

I still eat fish sometimes, so I am technically a pescetarian and not a vegetarian. However, life as a pescetarian is still pretty difficult. For one thing, I never knew how many people had opinions about what I ate until I stopped eating meat. For another thing, I never realized how many things have meat in them. Here’s my story of what life is like when you cut out red meat and chicken… Read More »

Breaking Up (with Caffeine) Is Hard to Do…

23051333.jpg

I quit Diet Coke. I’ve been clean for 2 months with one lapse, where I tried to save calories at the bar and went for a Bacardi and diet. I couldn’t even finish it and have been off the sauce (the cola, that is) ever since.

Basically I have come to the conclusion that diet soda isn’t that great for you. Yes, it gives you a caffeine buzz, but there’s something I respect more about coffee and tea. I also read Skinny Bitch and the scare tactics got to me. But as I tried to keep myself from running around all jittery, I realized that leaving caffeine is a lot like ending a serious relationship. Except it can actually help stop the formation of an ulcer instead of causing it.

I’m down to one cup of coffee a day. It’s trickiest when you need little pick-me-up to get through the work day, but some things have definitely helped me transition: Read More »

Becoming A “Skinny Bitch”

6a00cd973b0cf04cd500e398ab6c5b0003-500pi.jpgOkay, before you all jump down my throat for that title…This post is in reference to a real book that has been published, and is actually on the New York Times Bestseller List.

Although I find the title mildly offensive, it has truly changed the way I eat, helped me drop those pesky extra post-college pounds, and improved my health overall.

Skinny Bitch, written by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin, is a straight-forward (and sometimes abrasive) book detailing their philosophy for girls who want to “stop eating crap and start looking fabulous!” I mean, who doesn’t want that? The authors go into detail explaining evidence and scientific research behind what actually goes into all types of food and definitely do not hold their feelings back!

Although the book basically preaches a vegan lifestyle (no meat, dairy, etc.), I think everyone can take something away from their overall philosophy: You should know what you’re eating and where it came from, and food that is natural or organic is better for you than all the processed crap we eat daily.

After reading this book, I decided to change a few of my own habits and the results have been amazing… Read More »

Bitch! Don’t Say That Word!

oops

How many times do I say the word in a day?

I couldn’t rightly tell you. It’s one of my favorite swears. One of my favorite terms of endearment. It looks so good italicized. Plus, it sounds pretty fantastic coming out of someone’s mouth.

Don’t get me wrong, bitch can be completely derogatory, especially when it’s said with malice, or spoken by a guy to describe a girl, but is there really anything better than walking into a room and greeting your girlfriends with a rousing yell of hey, bitches! ?

Darlene Mealy, a Brooklyn member of The New York City Council, thinks there is. What’s better than using it as a term of endearment? Eradicating it all together.

Explaining that the word carries with it “a paradigm of shame and indignity”, Ms. Mealy has introduced a measure against the word, a measure that has the support of 19 out of 51 members on the council.

Even while she declares bitch a “vile attack on our womanhood”, Mealy admits that if the measure passes, it will almost be impossible to enforce. Which of course begs the questions of why. Read More »
