I know, it’s funny to be campy and over the top. But didn’t we all make fun of the eighties the first time around? Now it seems the spandex are unstoppable, patent leather is everywhere, and even the fanny pack has re-invented itself as a bit of “so old it’s new.”
I will say that the leggings, short dress, and boot combo is functional and sort of sexy. I’ll admit it I’ve rocked it.
But every time I walk into a shoe store and see the patent leather shoe, I think to myself, really? I think that was over circa 1990. If I see shoulder pads I might slap somebody. I know that Europeans have been heading towards the eighties trend for some time now.
The last time I was in France (about a year ago) I would see the skinny jeans, with heels and be brought back to the iconic image of Brooke Shields in her Calvins.
As a not-so-skinny girl, (size 12 perfectly normal) the flared jean has done wonders for me. Then suddenly out of nowhere it seemed the skinny jean and/or the spandex was everywhere. Me and my above average ass were not ok with this.

Call me crazy, but once I caught wind that stirrup pants are back in vogue I squirmed a little in my seat.
I know what you’re thinking! You’re thinking I’m about to unload a 300 word rant on why they were left in the 80′s for a reason.
Nope! Sorry to disppoint, but I am pumped to see that seeming unflattering bottoms are back!
Most people will say if you’re going to go for the skinny look just go with skinny jeans (and if you’re seriously behind–leggings), but why can’t we have a little fun with our trends?
Nobody is saying you have to pair these with an oversized sweater and a side ponytail…just because it’s a revival trend doesn’t mean it can’t be modernized.
I say, pair the pants with simplified, streamlined, modern pieces. Some gold hoops here or some silver bangles there will pull your look together marvoulously.
Keep it monochromatic! If you’re going to rock the ankle straps, now is not the time to overload on color or pattern. Personally, I’d keep the outfit all black and pair it with a hot pair of pumps (any color or style!). Read More »
During this week’s blog, I torture the Bro with fashion questions, ask what he thinks of couture outfits (and the models wearing them), and force him play stream-of-consciousness.
Ah, just like being in the backseat of a car on our way to Grandma’s.
Me: Alright, well, you might not have known that it was fashion week last week in New York. First off…do you have any idea who Anna Wintour is?
The Bro: nope
Me: She’s basically this 50ish year old woman who wears giant sunglasses and thinks she is the most fashion forward person on the planet
Me: here is a picture of her: (she’s in the middle) Thoughts?
The Bro: She doesn’t look as old as meryl streep does in that movie
Starbucks was an integral part of my college experience.
Whether it was grabbing a latte before my 8 am class at the building next door, or catching up with a friend I hadn’t seen in awhile due to crazy schedules, I have so many memories that include Starbucks and college, it’s hard to count.
Over my four years, I started to become more aware of what I was drinking and just how many calories and grams of fat I was ingesting (one venti white chocolate mocha can cost you 580 calories…not to mention almost 5 bucks).
I eventually became used to ordering drinks with skim milk and sugar-free syrups. I downsized from Ventis to Grandes, and — gasp! — even Talls. Recently, I have also become very fond of their tea selection.
And much to everyone’s surprise, there are actually ways to order low fat/low cal drinks at Starbucks…you just have to know what to ask for.
Being more of a skinny jean type girl, straight-legged, resolving to embrace my complete lack of calves, (I think I was the only girl that nodded my head in empathy when that guy got calf implants on True Life: I’m Getting Plastic Surgery) I wasn’t so on-the-trend-boat to learn that Kate Moss is apparently starting a new “skinny flares” trend. From the pictures, they look like any old flares to me, but of course it’s not a trend if it doesn’t have a cool new name, right?
My preference to straight-leg jeans simply arises from the fact that I feel most people just don’t know how to pull off a flare. The flares either too big (Marsha Brady bell-bottomy should always be a fashion no-no), or too long (like when girls get that weird crinkly knee?), and nothing makes me cringe more than when it’s worn and torn and dingy looking at the bottom, hem them for goodness sake! I love my man. I met him back in 6th grade, and I fell in love. I feel so blessed to have such a long, trusting realtionship. Every year, every season, he brings me so many pretty things. We have really grown together. He knows exactly what I like and every year, even with all my indecisiveness and ever-changing moods and tastes, he has stood up to the challange. And this year, Steve Madden, my main man (in shoes that is… although I would never object to dating a man who could literally make me the little old lady who lived in her shoe) has made me proud again by bringing a plethora of styles to feed my/your foot fetish.
And what’s more is that right now on SteveMadden.com and in Steve Madden stores nation wide there is a major sale going on. (um, who’s excited for the next rainy day?)
Steve’s shoes this summer are so similar to those of the uber–exclusive (read: muy expensivo) designers…. (many are much cuter and for ¼ of the price much more appealing) I saw a shoe JUST like these by Marc Jacobs. Adorable! Read More »
Con-graduation! The time has finally come to snag that piece of paper you have had in your sights for the last 4 years. As I am sure you have heard, graduation can be an incredibly tiresome and boring process. It’s a whole lot of hurry up and wait, so knowing what to wear and what to bring can make all the difference on this ever-so important day.
Andrea from NYU gives the lowdown on the fashion do’s and don’ts of Graduation. Check it out.
Every year, every season, fashion seems to be pretty particular. Kind of like the bitty old women who order their salads with extra tomato, hold the croutons, dressing on the side, and please use ONLY romaine lettuce– fashion trends the past few years have been distinct and particular.
Skinny jeans, vests, bubble dresses and wedges were seen in the collections of every designer from Marc Jacobs to Miu Miu to the guest designers for Target. I always like the idea of being told what’s “in.” My eye gets used to the new styles quickly and I felt sooo like LiLo (Lindsay Lohan) this year in my skinny jeans, skull tops and black nail polish.
So what gives now? Clearly the fashion geniuses of the world have been slacking/ not collaborating/ doing too many drugs to have any sort of open communication. Or maybe they decided to throw the ways of uniformity out the window and let originality take over, but either way, I for one am confused! It’s a smorgasbord of fashion out there and anything goes. Super-skinny, super wide, low rise, high-waisted (um, helllllo camel toe), big and printed shirts like the ones my grandma rocks when she goes to get her hair done, or form fitted and boyish (have you seen this springs Gap collection? boy scouts anyone?) Fashion this season is more fickle then I am at an ice-cream store (and trust me I am FI-CKLE). Read More »
