Welcome Back, TV!

Happy Tuesday! No, I am normally not this chipper on a Tuesday morning, even if it is warmer than yesterday’s one degree. Yes, one. In fact, I’m was still feeling rather crabby and I-Hate-This-Cruel-Cold-World for the first few hours of my day (having broken a nail while trying to open my car door that was frozen shut), until I began sipping on my third cup of coffee and reading this.

Check out that loooong list of shows that will be coming back now that the writers have returned to work. Granted, they really didn’t get everything they want and will probably be doing this whole strike thing again in 3 years, but being an American, I am all about the here and now. And here and now is looking quite good with our favorite shows coming back to TV. Read More »

Vintage Holiday Fun: Schweaty’s Christmas Balls

Anyone with a sense of humor can tell that Saturday Night Live has ebbed a little when it comes to being hilarious.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what has turned the once intensely entertaining show into an hour of slightly-too-long sketches that sometimes make a person laugh, but whatever the recipe that conjured the Eddie Murphy, Chris Farley and later Will Ferrell generation, today’s SNL could use it.

That being said, I’m not sure the holiday would be complete without a little visit from a vintage SNL clip that only gets funnier with age. The combination of public radio personalities, Alec Baldwin, and tasty, bite-size treats is pure comic genius.

Long Live Schweaty’s Balls.

Lunchtime Laugh: The Lonely Island

Yesterday, we let you in on Andy Samberg’s total domination of SNL, but what you may not know is that he was ruling the internet way before then with his best buds Akiva and Jorma (now SNL writers) in a comedy troupe called The Lonely Island.

Take a mid-day break and check out some vintage Samberg (all the way from 2001!) in the faux rap group Incredibad. And when you’re finished check out all of their hilarious vids here!

Andy Samberg Is SNL

With SNL’s Digital Shorts the only reason people tune in these days, Andy Samberg can do no wrong when it comes to pushing our buttons and making us laugh.

That said, did you see “Iran So Far” yet?? If not, where the hell have you been? Holy crap, Fred Armisen’s dean-on impression of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is so strangely lovable, especially in that red dress. Samberg’s goofy grin and pseudo seriousness is…refreshing to say the least (ahem, Weekend Update…).

“Iran So Far” is definitely going viral (as much as “Dick in a Box”?) in a big way, but we here at College Candy are getting the ball rolling on causing another one of Samberg’s skits from Saturday night to make a splash on You Tube. Read More »

What is…Drinking on the Job?

My favorite SNL parodies are those Celebrity Jeopardy spoofs. No matter how many times I watch them, they constantly make me laugh.

You know what else makes me laugh that’s even better than (admittedly) mediocre satirical sketches? Retro clips of Alex Trebek swearing his head off and acting like a pompous asshole.

Listen to that Canadian accent! Impressive.

This just goes to show that even celebrities who aren’t really celebrities have overblown egos. It must have something to do with staring into a camera all day, or in Trebek’s case, spending years and years of his life rattling off little known facts and hanging out with nerds.

Guy of the Moment: Andy Samberg

andy sambergForget Shia LeBeouf.

The buzz tides are turning toward SNL hottie Andy Samberg. A smooth – talking Don Juan or babyfaced teen star he’s not, but Samberg’s got the goods.

Why? Because he’s funny!

And while my heart used to beat exclusively for Jimmy Fallon, I’m in the process of becoming a complete Sambergphile. Besides being hilarious, he’s also cute in a completely awkward way that makes you think he never gets with girls (although that is sadly untrue).

In short, he seems normal even when he’s quite the comic genius. He broke out with The Lonely Island, a collection of comic shorts that he and two friends wrote, starred, and produced in. You can see them all on YouTube. Read More »

Scarlett’s Gonna Be a Pop Star

ScarlettIt makes perfect sense that the Sexiest Body in the World wants to be the next big singer.

Actress turned wannabe vocalist, Scarlett Johansson, has been recording her own album, “Scarlett Sings Tom Waits” for the past year with Rhino Records.

The thing is, she’s actually pretty good! MUCH better than most of the other actresses-turned-singers we’ve seen in recent years. Although I must admit, I am one of the only people who liked Jennifer Love Hewitt circa “How Do I Deal?

Nonetheless, Scarlett’s deep, rhaspy speaking voice works really well for her vocal stylings, and she already has the image to back it up.

Catch a snippet of her singing “Summertime” here, and check out her opening SNL last week making fun of Sanjaya, played by the hilarious Andy Sandberg here. She’s joking around, of course, but you can still hear her pipes.

This weekend, Scarlett made an appearance at Coachella, singing back up for Jim Reid of the band The Jesus and Mary Chain. Read More »

Mr. Schweddy Pays For College

195818pvxt_w.jpgYahoo! News reports that Alec Baldwin is going to pay for 18-year-old Private Resha Kane’s entire college tuition after completing her military duty in Iraq. He was so moved by a news story he read about her last day in the states with family and friends, that he tracked Kane’s mother down in the discount store where she worked.

Baldwin has been very vocal about his opposition to the war, but still supports the troops. He is set to meet with the Kane family in Mohave Valley next week to present the check in person.

I love Alec Baldwin. I had the chance to meet him a few months ago in the office where I worked, and he was very nice and handsome and quirky. And now, I love him even more! It’s great to see people with gobs of money get personal and give back every now and then.

If you want to help out the troops, Soldiers’ Angels is a great place to donate money, letters and simple care packages.

If you want to check out Alec at his best, watch this classic clip from SNL. It’s Schweddy-licious!
