It seems like every time you go online another celebrity got a nose job due to "a deviated septum." It's ridiculous that they expect us to believe that and even more ridiculous that they got it done in the first place.
Every day we’re bombarded with a million different messages about what we are supposed to look like. And tell you what, our not-so-scientific-yet-totally-accurate visual research proves that 99% of girls out there don’t fit the mold. So instead of telling you how to wear your hair, or how much weight to lose, or which one of Heidi Montag’s many surgeries to get, we’re going to celebrate these so-called beauty flaws with beautiful women every single week.

Last week we celebrated the bushy brow. Today, let’s talk about the schnoz.

It seems like every time you go online another celebrity got a nose job due to “a deviated septum.” It’s ridiculous that they expect us to believe that and even more ridiculous that they got it done in the first place. Many of us use celebrities (like Alexa Chung) or TV characters (like Joan Holloway from Mad Men) as style inspiration, even though, most of the time, they are being dressed from head to toe by the best stylists. Which we don’t have. And sometimes it’s damn near impossible to work their Hollywood looks into our not-so-Hollywood lives. I’ve made it my mission to tap into the mind of a fashion stylist and show you how to take your style inspiration – whatever it may be – and make it more you

Not gonna lie, I could literally write an entire book of how I think everything Sofia Coppola does is the coolest shizz ever.

No big deal, she was only the director of some of my favorite movies, like The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette. She’s just the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, the director of The Godfather, besides being related to some of the coolest people in Hollywood (like Jason Schwartzman, heyo!).

Besides those minor details, she quietly pursues another interest (that she is, unsurprisingly, awesome at) and that is fashion. She created her own fashion line called Milkfed, unfortunately for me, sold only in Japan. She and Marc Jacobs are pretty much best friendz forever, considering she is also his muse for his ENTIRE BRAND. Also, the woman interned at Chanel when she was 15-years-old for Christ’s sake. Wanna know what I was doing when I was 15? Taking MySpace mirror pictures in my bathroom wearing a “sweet new top*~!” Therefore, Sofia: 1 million, Cristina: 0.

The things she creates and inspires are godly to me, including her style. The confusing yet awesome part of Sofia’s style is that she sticks many times to classic feminine pieces but has still been known to have a sort-of androgynous style as well. Sofia will rock anything from jeans and a t-shirt to a Marc Jacobs original and make it all look like it was made for her specifically. She has been quoted as not liking anything too loud and flashy, but sticks to a style that represents her calm disposition. Plus she made it socially acceptable to wear flats to red-carpet events. Yep, she definitely knows how to get the ball rollin’.

So, yeah, who wouldn’t want to take a little inspiration from this fashion icon? And here’s how we can all channel Sofia through our own wardrobes.

Bag, Skirt, Shoes, Shirt, Sunglasses

Sofia is all about the classics and it doesn’t get more classic than a crisp white shirt. Add a little girly flair by tucking it in to the polka dot skirt and mix things up a little with the masculine styling on these ballet flats. It’s a combo that totally works and just oozes Sofia’s personal style.

The wayfarer sunglasses add a hint of laid-back cool that is so very Sofia, and the overly structured (and somewhat masculine) bag is just another way to make this look a little androgynous and a lot more interesting. It also happens to be a similar style to the bag that she helped Louis Vuitton create in honor of her personal style, for about an eighth of the price.

Yes, LV made a bag just for her.

Stop being cooler than me, Sofia.

Are you in the mood?

Don’t lie to me. We all do it.

We curl up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn, a Diet Coke and soak up every minute of teenage nostalgia, especially the angst-y, heartbreak-y, hormone-driven parts that come with the High School Movie. We may be out of high school, but that doesn’t mean we’re over it. Our very fascination with those 4 years and the events that might have changed our lives is secretly compelling to us. So we watch. And we love it.

And that’s OK. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a little high school drama (and an occasional choreographed dance) again. There is so much to be learned from those flicks and so much happiness to be gleaned from the fact that we are no longer living them.

Just to let you know that indulging in high school drama is a healthy and well-adjusted way to waste your free time, I created a list of the best/awesomely funny/most ridiculous high school movies you will ever see.

1. Get Over It

Because breaking up is never funny (all the time) but getting over it is. High School Basketball star Burke Landers (Ben Foster) gets chucked by his girlfriend, who then takes up with the cocky, arrogant, “Mary Poppins sounding” Striker (Shane West). Burke ends up stalking them into the school play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, landing a lead role (after a series of unfortunate events) and develops a closer relationship with his best friends’ sister (Kirsten Dunst). If the way Burke attempts to get over the girl doesn’t get you, his “hip and understanding” parents will make you cringe and the boy band-esque song Ben Foster and Shane West perform will make you wet your pants… or vomit in your mouth.

Oh, I almost forgot: Sisqo of “Thong Song” fame has a supporting role.

2. Drive Me Crazy

They’re next door neighbors, former BFFs before high school. She’s preppy (Melissa Joan Hart). He’s alternative (Adrien Grenier). She wants to get a date for prom. He wants his girlfriend back. Quid Pro Quo. They fall for each other under watch of the scheming socialistas of high school. Nothing says true love like scheming for a prom date. Pre-Entourage Adrien Grenier is still oh so pretty. Yes, pretty.

Btw, they use similar SAT words that the supposed 15 year olds of Dawson’s Creek encouraged. Love it.

3. Some Kind of Wonderful

Classic. Mary Stuart Masterson is Watts. Her BFF is Keith (played by Eric Stoltz) is in love with the popular girl (what else is new). Watts, out of the kindness of her heart, helps him and realizes she’s falling for him. Why watch? Because Mary Stuart Masterson is amazing. She’s the tomboy you want to be.

John Hughes, writer/director/producer of Brat Pack film fame, gives this movie Pretty in Pink ‘s original ending. Is that a teardrop I see?

4. Dead Poets’ Society

You know how comedic actors try serious roles and are super successful and under rated? (Will Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction, Jim Carrey in The Majestic and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) This is Robin Williams’ moment. John Keating is the teacher above all teachers. Walt Whitman never made me cry harder than when Ethan Hawke saluted his teacher with O Captain, my Captain. Aw man, here I am getting misty eyed again.

This movie captures the awakening of adulthood within teenagers. It explores sex, suicide, love, and passion. It encourages Thoreau’s view that “the universe is wider than our views of it.”

This movie gets you.

5. Footloose

Ren (Kevin Bacon) moves to a town that banned public dancing and music. Think about how that would affect your life. Especially with a soundtrack this danceable!! You’ll sing along to “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” when he teaches his best friend Willard to dance. There’s also a lesson to learn about teenage relationships and abuse. (Dear Rihanna, I thought of you and CB.)

6. The Virgin Suicides

Kirsten Dunst has a knack for choosing fantastic roles. In this movie she is Lux Lisbon, the oldest in a family of five girls. The sisters suffer under their overprotective parents after the youngest sister commits suicide. The Lisbon girls are placed under house arrest and home schooled by their parents after Lux returns home the morning after a dance, their records are taken away and it seems like there’s nothing to live for. The story is told by the boys who lived next door and were fascinated by the girls. It’s a beautiful story. A bit bland but still heart wrenching. I guess the ending won’t be much of a surprise.

7. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

If you don’t know, get familiar. Enough said.

8. Angus

Tagline: For everyone on the outside looking in…your moment has arrived! I saw this movie when I was 14 and I have always remembered it. Before James Van Der Beek found the Creek, he was a bully with a seriously tweaked sense of humor who tormented Angus. Angus is ostracized and humiliated by his peers because of his obesity. In addition, the girl of his dreams is the girlfriend of the bully of his nightmares. Armed with no confidence and fading hope, Angus tries to be invisible until he can leave the school.

9. Heathers

The Original Mean Girls!! They’ve got sex appeal and intimidation down. The Heathers could eat Regina George alive! Though Veronica is the one that should be feared. She killed them all. There are two lessons to learn from this movie:

1.	Mean people suck!
2.	Popularity leads to murder?

Still working on that last one.

10. Election

You are not an overachiever if you’re not Tracy Flick. She slept with, then blackmailed her teacher to win an election. I bet you’ve only made straight A’s. BO-RING!

There you have it. The best of the best high school movies.
Order from Netflix, visit Blockbuster, or buy online. Just watch em!

It seems that you can’t make your way through Hollywood without tripping over a Coppola. Though their names are generally disguised , and it is often hard to see the resemblance. The more Francis Ford relatives are spawned, the more careers seem to be thriving. Nicholas Cage boldly dropped his prestigious last name in anticipation of an independent persona, Jason Schwartzman is a Coppola cousin, also related to actress Talia Shire, and actor/director Roman.

But we mustn’t forget the prodigal daughter Sofia. You must forgive my bias opinion when discussing the topic of this Oscar winning writer/director. Visually, I find her films stunning, yet there is a drawback to creating a series of pretty pictures; when they begin to move they just don’t make sense.

Of course, deriving from one of the greatest filmmakers in recent history provides every technical advantage you could imagine, as well as more immediate funding for films that would otherwise be tossed aside. With such a shortage of truly gifted female directors, I find her hipster acclaimed montages scored by post punk and emo ballads to be sort of pointless all together.

Yes, my distaste for Lost In Translation has stirred quite a few vicious arguments among self proclaimed film buffs. But in all honesty, watching Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray discuss a shirt for twenty five minutes in a series of long drawn out shots and very little dialogue made me, by the end of the movie, consider the outcome of the Virgin Suicides as a viable option.

One fearless reviewer of Marie Antoinette said perceptively that it was “an easy-listening style of film making, where the basic visual notes are hit but complexities, nuances and deeper meanings remain ignored.” I set out to love her work, but by the end of the first half hour I find myself searching for things to throw at the screen just so that something will actually happen.

The true tragedy of this film stems far beyond the hollow plotline and countless historical inaccuracies. In the film that cost a ridiculous 40 million dollars to make, you can see the boom mic in a total of seven different times and even the reflection of a crew member in a mirror dressed in modern attire. Putting aside the fact that the contemporary music was interesting conceptually but had no place in the film, or that a pair of Chuck Taylor All Stars were thrown into Antoinette’s shoe closet, it has become more than apparent that Coppola identifies with her main character’s struggle. Youth and privilege spawns ignorance. The moral of the story should have been that if you are not in touch with the struggle of others or the reality of a decaying society no amount of materialism or superficial distraction can save you from the inevitable outcome. Instead, we are supposed to sympathize with a spoiled teenager because she just didn’t know any better. In the most anti-feminist film about feminism I have seen since the remake of The Stepford Wives, this movie fails on every level and pulled in a disappointing eight million dollars to the box office.

The good news for female directors is that there is light beyond Tamra Davis. Take Rebecca Miller, daughter of world-renowned playwright Arthur Miller and photographer Inge Morath. Morath, originally a painter and sculpture at Yale, developed a love for theater and film, taking a unique approach to directing. With 2002’s Personal Velocity, Miller shot on a Sony DV camera. Thanks to cinematographer Ellen Kuras, this low budget film artistically developed a fly on wall quality unachievable on 35mm. With a small crew and little equipment Miller proves that substance and wit prevail over big budget extravagance and fleeing character development. Her intricate character study was an excellent follow up to 1995’s coming of age story Angela. As a director, her latest project was 2005’s The Ballad Of Jack and Rose staring husband Daniel Day Lewis, critically acclaimed with a short theatrical shelf life it is currently airing on IFC. Miller’s most recent project will be adapting her father’s play “The Man Who Had All The Luck” .

Also immersing herself in the world of independent film is Asia Argento, daughter of famous Italian horror director Dario Argento and actress Daria Nicolodi. Asia has not only developed her own visual style as a filmmaker but as a painter, sketch artist, photographer and novelist. Also a DJ and musician, Argento made a name for herself in Europe as a child appearing in complex and mature roles directed by her father. Quoted as saying, “Sometimes I think my father gave me life because he needed a lead actress for his films.” Making a crossover into American movies seemed natural for the Italian born trilingual actress, appearing in the high budget action flick XXX and The Keeper. In 2000’s Scarlet Diva Argento transformed the absurdity of her life as an Italian film star into a semi-autobiographical journey through sex, drugs, and the pursuit of artistic integrity. Never afraid to bear herself, body and soul, Diva received bad to mediocre reviews at best; calling Argento narcissistic and self-indulgent. Although narcissism seems to work well for Quentin Tarantino, it makes you wonder if there might be some kind of double standard. Having directed and starred in 2005’s The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, it is obvious that Argento has grown into a more visual and cohesive artist.

Argento has also just finished a video diary of sorts for Showstudio.com. The ten day documentary included three installments for every twenty four hours. Below the clips, users had the option of commenting and asking questions that she would later respond to. By the end of “Don’t Bother to Knock” you realize this project is not a diary at all, but in actuality the first interactive film experiment. Also, she is appearing in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. Her next project is Mother Of Tears directed by her father Dario Argento, which will be the third in a trilogy including Susperia and Inferno.

It seems that women filmmakers born into families of respected artists must struggle to find their own individual voice and brave a constant comparison. With a shortage of female filmmakers in the general talent pool steering away from formula romantic comedies, we can not overlook what is emerging and be grateful for what we have. While looking forward to the future, we also cannot help but see aspects of history in the work of these notable daughters of film and wonder where they could possibly be going next and what other women directors have waiting for us in the horizon.
