Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Olivia Wilde is Daring and Divine

[Welcome to Celebrity Chic on the Cheap, where our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities (Reese Witherspoon, what what?) are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you don’t have to.]

Olivia Wilde has been up and coming for a few years. To me, she will always be Marissa Cooper’s experiment with lesbianity on The OC, but she’s definitely moved on to slightly more prestigious fare since then (oh you know, only snagging a regular role on House). She’s been a staple on sexiest actresses list for a few years because…well, have you looked her? She smolders. But I hadn’t realized she was a bit of a fashionista in her own right until she stepped out on the Golden Globes red carpet a couple of weeks ago in the this sparkly, dazzling, beautifully constructed number.

Seriously, if fashion were porn, that dress would be the money shot.

Since then, I’ve been paying a bit more attention to Ms. Wilde, and last week, she somehow managed to make a jumpsuit look cute.

My mind is still blown, quite honestly.

But, I’m a realist, and really, 98 percent of us will never actually wear a jumpsuit (rompers are already shameful enough). So this outfit will be based on the essence of Olivia’s look and therefore a lot more wearable. Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Ashley Olsen is Pretty in Pastels

[Welcome to Celebrity Chic on the Cheap, where our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities (like hot mama, Jessica Alba) are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you don’t have to.]

I don’t think much about Ashley Olsen these days (with the exception of when I catch Full House reruns and roll my eyes at how obnoxious Michelle Tanner is). She is the CEO of two fashion lines (one that I am way too old to wear, and one that I am way too broke to wear), while Mary-Kate is the one who still occasionally graces us with her acting presence, and I hold her entirely responsible for the dirty hipster hobo-chic trend that has been around for far too long.

But when Ashley Olsen appeared at the Google Boutique launch party (because it’s not like Google has infiltrated enough of our everyday lives…) in an outfit that was not only fitted but actually adorable, I was shocked. Like, I had no words. Well, except for gimme, gimme, gimme. Read More »

Do It Yourself Tuesdays: Christian Louboutin Petal Sandal

louboutin petals diy sandals

I get weak in the knees every time I see a celebrity sporting a pair of red soled shoes. And it’s not the infamous red bottoms that do it for me, it’s the fact that all Louboutins are beautiful, sexy, and so sophisticated that I literally dream about them. (And in my dreams, they are super comfy, too!) But in my dreams is where they are going to stay, unless some very rich person (Oprah, you listening!?) sends over a few pairs. At over $700 a pair, that’s my only chance.

But maybe not. While mindlessly perusing the interwebs last night I found this: a how-to for making your own version of the chic and beautiful Christian Louboutin Petal Sandal. All you need is an old pair of strappy black sandals (which we all have lying around) and a little delicate fabric and you are minutes away from your very own Louboutins. Read More »

Night Styler: Jump(suit) for Joy!

jumpsuitThis week my Night Styler is centered around a clothing trend I will admit I was a bit baffled with in the beginning, but has slowly and steadily grown on me: the pant jumpsuit.

We’ve seen this throwback to the 80s’ cousin, the romper, all over the place for a couple of years and I will admit that I have a purely love/love relationship with those cute little guys. But this season designers really took it back by featuring flowy pantsuits we haven’t seen since ’88.  Admittedly, this isn’t a look that everyone can pull of (heck, I’m not even sure I can pull it off, but God knows I’m gonna try), but it might not be as difficult as you suspect with the right shoes and accessories.

This jumpsuit from Express has the look down. It’s flowy and loose-fitting, but still maintains a sexy quality that’s sure to get looks.  Bonus: it comes in four colors, including this season’s it color – hot pink. (Note: hot pink is hard to pull off on its own and attempting to do so in the form of a jumpsuit is not for the weak.) Bonus #2: It saves you time choosing pants and a shirt, as it’s already done for you. Read More »

Five Things Real Men Don’t Sport

23710715.jpg

Lots of guys know how to dress. It’s definitely a turn-on when they find a style that fits their personalities. And even if they don’t have the know-how, sometimes all it takes is confidence, and even the biggest male fashion blunder can be overlooked.

But girls, we’ve all been here before:

“He’s really cute! Omigod…..well he was before I noticed he was wearing……that.”

“That” could be one of five things that, in my opinion, can make a good-looking, adorable, manly-looking kinda guy go from potential hook-up hottie, to….. “I think I see my friend over there.”

Beware. Counting down to the most irritating, here are the top five things real men should never sport. Ever. If you have a boyfriend who applies to this list, (though I hope that’s not the case) share this with him immediately. Share with everyone you can.

Strappy Sandals. You know the kind. The complicated, brown leather sandals with a slight heel. These monstrosities don’t make any outfit look anything remotely close to good.

Bracelets. Unless he’s wearing a diamond bracelet in hopes you’ll see it and say, “Hey, why are you wearing that diamond bracelet?” and he’ll say, “Oh, it’s actually for you. And there’s a lot more where that came from,” bracelets on guys are unnecessary. Read More »
