This Post Grad Life: Selfishness is Not a Crime

When I think of the word selfish, I see every single sixteen year-old human being in the world. All they care about is wasting gas money in their new little car, getting whatever they want whenever they want it and completely dropping everything and everyone for themselves. I know that sounds a little harsh – but weren’t we all like that at that age? I was. I spent all of my parent’s money on Arizona Green Tea at the gas station and spent every waking moment with my fluttery hearted little boyfriend just because he made me happier than anyone else at the time.

Selfish.

As I got older, my selfishness started to go away, for obvious reasons. Like – there were other people in the world. Compromising started to sound like something fun, sacrificing time and money started to become the norm. I started growing up. And with growing older came giving up some of the things I did for myself, to begin doing for others. I started making time for others – I went to group project meetings instead of watching TV show finales or roaming around Target. They were simple sacrifices, but they were prominent.

Growing up is all about losing that selfish factor. Especially in a new job environment, – I want to make sure everything I’m doing is coherent with everyone else’s time and tasks. Even with friendships, I want to always keep others in mind. I want to make others happy and let them trust me for things. I am keenly aware of what others are thinking, based upon my adult actions. Surviving Senior Year: Calm (Before the Storm)

Right before I sat down to write this I opened a letter (yes because apparently people still send those) informing me that come April I will be able to pick up my cap and gown. I looked at the letter, rolled my eyes, and thought April? Really? Why are they sending me this now when I don’t need to pick it up until April? But still I opened up my Google Calendar and went to plug in the date. But oh wait…what’s that?

April is only two clicks months away.

TWO MONTHS.

That’s shorter than a season of the Bachelor.

And that doesn’t even account for all the days off I have coming up.

Currently, I’m enjoying a five-day weekend. I’ll head into class one day next week, and then two more the week after, and then it’s Spring Break time. And when I get back there will only be three more weeks of March. And then it’s April. A month filled with weeks shortened by Easter and Passover holidays. The month I thought was oh so far away. The month I can pick up my cap and gown. My last month of undergraduate classes. My last month as a college student. Maybe April is closer than I thought. I mean, how did we even get to February already anyway?

Body Blog: Survive The Stress of College Life with Exercise

exercise_introWhat a coincidence it is that April is both Stress Awareness Month and when we all take finals. Cruel trick, world. A cruel trick, indeed.

Instead of grabbing a cigarette or another cup of coffee, use exercise this year as a way to alleviate the overwhelming feelings that come with cramming a semester’s worth of information into a few study sessions.

Clinically proven, exercise naturally decreases the amount of stress hormones your body produces and counteracts your body’s normal stress response. By working out regularly, your body will better be able to handle finals week and allow you to get in the amount of studying you desperately need. It will allow the burden of 2 tests in one day seem much less daunting than it really is. It will make the inevitable ‘F’ seem like a very doable passing grade.

So just take a deep breath and put on those sneakers before you hit the books. Read More »

Tips for a Stress-Free Voting Day!

j0384874.jpgElection day is right around the corner and I am sure many of you are already stressed and panicked about it. Here’s a list from huliq.com with some tips for ensuring your voting is as stress free as possible.

These people are pretty serious about making sure their election day runs smoothly, but here are some ideas to make sure your election day is overall AWESOME!

They say… “Vote early if you can.”

We say… Smoke pot early if you can.

They say… “Do not wear T-Shirts or other paraphernalia in support of your candidate. In most states, “political activity” is not allowed within 50 feet of a building used for voting.”

We say… Be proud of your candidate! Rock that ‘Barack My World‘ or ‘McCain Is My Homeboy‘ T-Shirts! Are they REALLY gonna arrest you for showin’ some U.S.A pride?! I think not. Just don’t rally or anything, they might arrest you for that.

They say… “Make sure you’re registered, before you vote. There are reports that thousands of names have been purged from voter polls.”

We say... They’ve got a point. You don’t wanna show up all pumped to make your mark on history only to find that your name has been PURGED. Check out www.canivote.org to make sure you’re still legit to vote. Read More »
