[Life isn’t black and white. As much as we wish we simply loved or hated things, there is often that whole annoying gray area in the middle. Like, we hate how Walmart treats its employees…but we love the low prices! Or, we love how that boy makes us laugh….but we hate that he has no motivation in life. Damn you, gray area; you make decision-making that much more complicated!

Ohh FB. I really do hate how much I love you.

Love: Clearly, Facebook serves its purpose as a social networking site. It’s great for ‘friending’ (and poking!) that cute guy you see around campus but don’t actually know, checking up on your friends from high school and leaving them funny video posts on their walls, and helping you to remember your lab partner’s birthday. Facebook makes it extremely easy to communicate with people without actually talking to anyone or putting in any real effort.

I also love Facebook’s “Events” section. Where else can find out about and get directions to parties AND know the guest list beforehand so you can determine whether or not you want to go? It’s pretty amazing. Best of all, however, has to be the new Facebook phonebook. With one click, you can see the numbers of all of your friends (who have added them!) and, if you have Facebook Mobile, even add them to your address book or call them from your cell. It’s genius. And it makes the whole awkward “can I have your number?” conversation obsolete!

Loathe: No matter how hard I try, a five minute “study break” on Facebook always turns out to be more of a two hour stalk-fest. It’s horrible. I start looking at pictures, reading notes, and laughing at status updates and, before I know it, 45 minutes have elapsed and none of my biology lab report has been written.

As we all know, Facebook makes you a creeper. Do you really NEED to be looking at pictures of your boyfriend’s ex girlfriend and getting jealous? Or what about that skank in your calculus class? Apparently yes, because I can’t seem to stop. And it’s not healthy. I mean, how creepy is it that you know a the interests, activities, and favorite quotations of some hot guy that you’ve never talked to? …Awkward.

On top of that, good old FBook can get pretty annoying with their constant notifications for EVERYTHING. Application invite? Want to join my group? Be a part of my cause?! Probably not, but I know that I’m going to be emailed about it. A bajillion times.

The worst thing (yes, even worse than all those stupid applications) though, is that everyone has a Facebook profile now. No longer reserved specifically for college students, now your boss, dentist, middle school choir teacher, and, scariest of all, even your parents can view your profile and the pictures you took at last weekend’s parties. Time to up those privacy settings!

In the end, though, no matter how creepy or unproductive my excessive Facebook use makes me, I know that I’ll never be able to pull myself away from it. I’m that addicted. And let’s be honest, despite it’s major issues, Facebook rocks. And I’m a junkie.

When sex ed fails…

So now you are stuck in the library for days at a time trying to stuff 4 classes worth of info into your alcohol-tainted brain. And you need an effing break! What do you do? Here is what CollegeCandy’s writers do for their much needed study break:

Sues – University of New Hampshire: My whole day is pretty much a series of study breaks since I continuously get sucked into the Internet and realize that I’m online shopping, reading blogs, and basically doing everything but studying. If I step away from the computer, I go to the gym!

John – UConn: My study break is when I stop drinking coffee in order to drink beer.

Kari – FSU: My study break looks like Phish Food, a well earned back rub from my boyfriend, and a wonderfully distracting episode of The Office…30 minutes of Jim Halpert’s face will perk me up any day.

Elise – UCLA: I slice an apple, cover it in cinnamon and Splenda, put it in the Kitchenette oven…I don’t let myself think of anything stressful while I let it bake… 20 minutes later I have healthy, sugary goodness and a clear(er) mind!

Lauren – University of Michigan: Mind numbing internet surfing. With a Diet Coke and some Pringles.

Elizabeth – UA Huntsville: My study break involves Facebook and some form of chocolate. Lately it’s been chocolate milk. A lot. I hate exams.

Erica – Kent State: Yogatoday.com when I’m feeling extra healthy & productive.

Sarabeth – University of Texas: I put in one of my Grey’s Anatomy DVDs and make some Easy Mac.

Suzanne – Tulane: Honestly? I go on CollegeCandy.

Alex – Lakehead University: For a study break I usually make a cup of tea and either pick up a book if my brain isn’t fried yet or, hop on the computer to check my email. Another favorite of mine is calling a friend for a longer break; gossip can be SO de-stressing.

Beata: Watching Love Actually and crying/laughing hysterically. Very good stress reliever.

Carly – Grinnell : If my brain isn’t too fried from reading academic mush, I curl up with a fun book and a cup of hot chocolate or tea. If it IS too fried, I do a Sudoku. I don’t have math classes, so it’s fun to do something with numbers that is actually enjoyable.

Noa – CU Boulder: I go to the gym. It’s the only way I won’t feel guilty or stressed about taking a study break.

Sara C: I like going for a run downtown. Getting off campus for a bit reminds me that life does go on beyond final exams!

K – NYU: Take out, en masse, with as many friends I can find who also need to procrastinate. Nothing better than chatting and stuffing one’s self with slightly greasy Thai food.

Sure I have better things to be doing with my time right now, like uh, write my final paper for one, but studying the art of procrastination seemed like a better idea. So now,here I am five hours later bringing you, dear readers, the most fun game of life. Period.

The “Would you rather” books by Justin Heimberg and David Gomberg give you hundreds of ridiculous dilemmas that you will never actually come across. They are exactly what every college student should have for a study break, a drinking game, or just an instant pick-me-up. The idea is that no matter what– you must choose (and trust me, being faced with such absurd situations will no doubt lead to a Donald Trump/Rosie O’Donnell type debate). So gather ‘round your buddies, grab some snacks, some drinks and get ready to laugh your tushie off. I mean, puh-lease, who wouldn’t want to decide between having to gyrate spastically in front of your best friends parents for two full minutes or having to wear an obscenely revealing thong bathing suit to the beach? (I’d choose the former- just because those thong bathing suits look sooo uncomfortable!)

Actually doing your work and don’t have time for a full out game with the pals? That’s cool too (except that I hate you for being more productive than me).
