That’s not all, though. Other things start to happen to my body when spring rears its mighty head.  Suddenly, I feel randomly productive.  I clean everything in my sight.  I wash a dish instead of just shoving it into the dishwasher.  I wash my socks instead of throwing them away because they are stained with feet sweat.  (I’m not kidding, I’m a disgusting person.) Let’s just say when spring comes around, everything falls into place and I feel like a giant firecracker is going to explode in my chest with excitement.

The first day I know it’s spring is usually the best day.  My nostrils flair into the wind, I smell smells I thought only squirrels could detect (i.e. dirt, acorn stubs, wet leaves, ant hills).  My fingers tingle and touch the breeze…oh, and what was that?  Did I just feel a soft blowing wind lift my baby hairs on the back of my neck? Happy sigh.

To say I’m smitten for spring is like saying I’m smitten for self-serve frozen yogurt, and anyone who knows me knows that I put way too many Oreo’s on my soft-serve I’m over the moon for both. And how can anyone not be? Oreo’s are delicious There’s nothing on earth as blissful and perfect as a spring day.

1. The combination of warm sun and a cool breeze: This lovely mixture of weather elements allows me to practice my favorite driving activity (second only to eating Jimmy Johns while merging):  Driving with the windows rolled down and the heat blasting. It’s single-handedly the best thing since pretzel M&M’s and mini backpacks combined.

2. Twitterpated syndrome (thanks Thumper): We all know what this is like.  You see the sun outside your window and you just want to explode into a billion mini candy hearts.  You see a guy wearing those completely sexy basketball shorts under the May sunlight and you want to hug a stranger. You take a sip of your non-fat iced latte and you just want to frolic down the street blowing kisses at everyone you see. The combination of these two will put you in a thick state of Twitterpatedness. Is that word in Urban Dictionary? It should be.

3. Sleeping with the window open: I’m obsessed with this.  Unlike many people, I actually enjoy waking up to birds whispering sweet nothings in my ear.  If I could, I would sleep with my face pressed against the screen so a sweet morning breeze could wake me up naturally come morning.  I’m like Cinderella that way.

4. Community Barbecues: It doesn’t matter if it’s Wednesday, Friday or Sunday.  They all rhyme with Funday and spring makes it perfectly excusable to double fist a Bud Light Lime (I’m a baby) and play ladder golf with a bunch of amazing losers you haven’t seen since last summer.

5. Easy Entertainment: I could sit and be entertained by virtually anything during the springtime.  Seriously, I could people watch for hours sitting outside, and don’t even get me started with how long I could stare at a patch of grass.  Aside from being completely turned on by everything that moves, I’m unusually content during this time of year.

6. Flip-Flops: They are the lazy girl’s savior.  Who needs to have a hernia trying to shove their fat calves into some skinny Jessica Simpson boots?  Not me.  I want to live a pain-free, lazy, flip-flop life.

7. The first trace of sunburn: A spring sunburn usually lasts about an hour, but it’s the best thing EVER.  After sitting outside in the quad with your girlfriends drinking screwdrivers from a Nalgene, you can proudly prance back into your dorm, touch your shoulders and tingle into that tender warmth.  Pure bliss.

8. The three B’s ‘Baseball, brewskies and Boys:’ Because who can think of a better combination?  Sure, they’re around during winter and fall. And sure, I sound like a fifth grader when I end a sentence with ‘boys.’  But when you wrap them all in a little springtime gift basket and they just all look so nice in those baby blue button-downs, how can you resist!?

9. Music trumps T.V: After spending months tucked into my couch watching Jay Leno and E! True Hollywood Story, the transition into spring flicks off the boob tube.  Spring makes me want to listen to music.  Spring makes me want to dance in circles around my coffee table.  Who said the perfect spring day involves the Kardashians?  It involves Zac Brown Band and Bob Marley.

10. A new slate: A new season, means a new slate. A fresh start, an open road. (And a whole new flouncy, girly wardrobe!)  However you see it, it’s brand new!  And I am willing to believe that is the best part about a perfect spring day.

You CAN recover from this!

Last week, I gave you all some tips on how to prevent sunburn and recommendations for sunscreen. While I’m sure every one of you went out and bought sunscreen to wear every day and not just for SBXI, I bet there’s a few who didn’t.  Or there are those stragglers who are wearing SPF 5 thinking it will work.  And that’s okay.  Except now you’re all “Why didn’t I listen to Caitlin?! Now I’m sunburnt and having a horrible time!”

Don’t worry, this video is all about treating sunburn!  I rarely burn, but I’ve had a few cases of awful sunburn where I had to stay inside and lay on the floor because my down comforter felt like a bed of nails against my skin.  I’ve blistered and picked and even had sun poisoning.  So trust me, I feel your pain.

Spring Break is right around the corner!! Can you tell I’m really excited? Come on, I know I’m not the only one.

But while it may seem like you can be as carefree as you want, truth is you need to take care of yourself, especially your skin!  We all love us some Snooki, but no one wants to come back from SBXI looking like that.  I’m not trying to lecture you or be your momma, but you must wear sunscreen!  Every day! Not just while you’re lounging on the beach drinking margaritas or bikini skiing.  Really, a killer tan is not worth the harm you can do to your skin.

I know these tips may be common sense, but to some people they’re not. And even if they are, well, we all need a little common sense reminder sometimes. Especially when we’re about to embark on a week-long bender. So below is a list of sunscreen tips and some recommendations. Watch the vid to protect yourself.  And next week we’ll be back with ways to treat your sunburn if you somehow manage to get it.

As great as it is to finally have the summer weather here, the season can create a lot of problems that tend to lengthen your morning routine. Like that near third-degree burn you picked up at the beach… how are you ever gonna cover that up in time for work?

And that awesome summer internship you scored demands you look absolutely adorable each and every day, which we all know can be extremely demanding and time-consuming. Not to mention, trying to find a work wardrobe that is super cute AND super affordable for a college student’s budget may seem impossible. Planning to migrate south for SB, too? Here are the five people you’ll meet during your stay, whether you want to or not:

1. Fratty McFistpump

Jersey Shore has taken the whole country by storm. Now I love myself some Snooki, but more and more people at my university have taken it a bit too far and turned into Pauly D look-a-likes. Which I would understand if, say, I went to school in New Jersey, not in the Midwest. But I digress. Fratty McFistpump is even more dangerous than your average FratBro or Guido, because he combines the best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) qualities into one overly tanned and muscley package. Now that school is on break, Fratty McFistpump will have more time to dedicated to GTL-ing, showing off his Situation, pounding Coronas with his best fraternity brothers, and hitting on as many girls in bikinis (read: yelling foul things to you and your friends) before high fiving his bros and downing that Jager bomb.

2. The Lobster

“I went tanning to get a base before I left. This baby oil will be just fine.”

Yeah, famous last words… before this moron poor kid spends the next 6 days seeking comfort in a bottle of aloe and the shade of a palm tree.  It won’t be until the last day of vacation that they’ll be able to join their friends in the sun, and until then, Fratty McFistpump will be sneaking up on them to slap their sunburned bellies as hard as they can.

3. The Old Guy

This man is long out of college (and was most likely creepy back then, too). You’ll spot him behind a pair of mirrored sunglasses walking up and down the beach. He’s wearing Velcro sandals and is sporting a serious farmer’s tan. His bald spot is red from the sun. He tries to buy you a daiquiri at the poolside bar and chooses the chair next to you when you’re laying out. Wherever you go, he’s there. You’ll see him around the hotel, then again at the club, in a pit stained shirt, buying rounds of shots for unsuspecting Spring Breakers and creepily staring at girls’ butts as they walk past. Eventually, sometime around 5am, you’ll see him guiding some very drunk girl back to his room. Do not be this girl.

4. The One In a Relationship

It’s hard to meet one of these, not because they don’t exist/partake in the “area codes” rule of dating, but because while the rest of the world is out partying on the beach, this Spring Breaker is tucked away in their room, pining for their significant other. They don’t want to go to the clubs because, “there’s no point if [insert cutesy name here] isn’t there.” They don’t want to drink on the beach because, “[insert barfy name here] didn’t want me to get drunk with all these random drunk people around.” So instead they flush that $800 dollars and week of fun down the drain and spend their time in internet cafes emailing their Honey Bunny on a Farm and watching subtitled episodes of Jerry Springer alone in their room.

5. The Sloptart

This Spring Breaker puts Ke$sha to shame. They’re drunk before breakfast and passed out by lunch. After sleeping away the day (and risking lobster status), they wake up just in time to get the party on for dinner. By the end of the week, they’ve puked in nearly every bar in town and made a cameo on Girls Gone Wild SB 2010.

On Spring Break, however, once you get off the plane at your final destination, you’re in it for the long haul. Though you anticipate your vacay being the highlight of the semester, it can be grueling to go all day, every day, and, being far from home, there’s a lot that can go wrong. Nothing is suckier than getting sick in a foreign place, fighting with your tripmates, or getting into a sticky situation in an unfamiliar place. Make sure you make it back to school in one piece this spring, by taking a few simple precautions.

1. Do your research.

Get some maps, or travel guides with tips, before you leave. Ask people you trust if they can recommend a good hotel. Try to brush up on the local rules or laws of the place you’re headed. The last thing you want to do is get lost, check into a lodging that is reminiscent of hostel, or get in trouble for something you didn’t even think was wrong.

2. Pack wisely.

Flip flops might be a necessity, but what about when you take a day trip that requires walking around all day to take in the sights? Pack a comfortable pair of shoes just in case that long night of clubbing wore out your feet. And even if you think you’re going somewhere tropical and plan to be in a bathing suit all day, it can’t hurt to throw a sweater in your suitcase for when the temperature drops after dark.

3. Give yourself a budget.

Say, “I’m going to spend X dollars a day,” or, “I have this much to spend all week. I should plan to spend 20% on food, 10% on travel, 30% on shopping and excursions, and 20% on nightlife.” Note that these percentages don’t make up 100%. You’ll want some emergency cash in case of a day of indulgence, or to make sure you have enough left to get home at the end of the week. Even if you don’t stick to your budget, you’ll be a lot closer than if you just went on a free-spirited spending spree.

4. Don’t rely on cell phones.

You don’t know where you’ll hit a dead zone, or a high-frequency area that won’t let your calls through. Plus, chances are, once you leave for the day, you’re gone. So what happens if your phone dies? Or if you thought your phone would work overseas, and it suddenly doesn’t. If you and your friends are splitting up into groups, establish a set time and meeting spot, just to make sure you don’t miss each other. Meet up a couple times a day to reevaluate the plan, or say you’ll all get dinner at six and then decide the night’s course of action.

5. Lather up!

Okay, I’m going to backtrack all the way to high school, even though we’re all in college now. It was my senior class trip to Florida, a week before prom. I’m so white I could be considered “Clear” before “Caucasian,” so I reapplied the sunblock like my life depended on it. When we got back to school, I remember one girl’s legs were so burned that they were fire engine red and swollen like tree trunks. And I was the only girl without ridiculous tan lines at the prom.  Shiseido makes a great sunscreen that leaves your skin feeling smooth, not leathery.

6. Stay. In. Groups.

Seriously, not to be your mom or anything, and we’re all grown up enough to know the buddy system is safer than the… stumbling through the streets alone system. Besides, isn’t the point on a high-priced vacation to spend some QT with your faves?

7. Have fun!

Don’t stress about your daily itinerary down to the minute. Don’t freak out if a stranger says “Hello.” Don’t argue with your friends about whether to hit the beach or lounge by the hotel pool. Come one, it’s only seven short days. Enjoy it. You deserve it!

About 60,000 people each year are diagnosed with some form of skin cancer, and we want to help you learn how to treat your red and itchy skin to avoid this! Well, that and show you some really easy ways to look cute despite being a different color than most members of the human race:

Keep skin hydrated: If your first shower after the beach left you with tears in your eyes because the water stung so bad, you need to keep your skin hydrated with lotion. The most soothing gels and lotions have aloe vera in them, and this will help soothe your skin and prevent itchiness (and therefore scratching and scarring). You can also use hydrocortisone if your burns are really bad.

Drink liquids with vitamins: Water helps to keep your skin hydrated, but is also really important to keep you hydrated after a long day in the sun. To get the most bang for your buck, be sure to drink things with vitamins C and E in them, as they are crucial in repairing damaged skin cells and ensuring that your body is healthy once your sunburn clears up.

Exfoliate: GENTLY buff away the dead skin. Don’t do this too roughly, as it will irritate your body, but just enough to make sure that the skin cells underneath are not trapped. And you’re not flaking off on your couch/bed/friends for the next two weeks.

See a doctor: This is only if you experience blisters, fever, faintness, dizziness, difficulty breathing, or nausea. This could be indicative of sun poisoning. Also, be sure to see a dermatologist regularly to get scanned for potentially harmful freckles and moles. The more often you do this (yearly?) the better your chances of catching anything serious early on.

Ugly tan lines: The next time you’re out in the sun, wear a wife beater over your top. You will not burn this way, and it still allows your arms to get some color while the lines on your shoulders even out. If you’re going out at night and want to disguise that burn line, think halter tops; they cover the same lines that will have burned in most bikini tops, and, let’s face it, they’re sexy as hell.

Make-up: Rub some foundation into your normal moisturizer (my choice is CoverGirl TruBlend). When you mix the two and apply moisturizer as you normally would, it hides any uneven skin tones and makes you look tan despite your UV mishaps. Spread it down your neck and across the tops of your shoulders so that you won’t look uneven, and carry a compact with you to pat down your skin if your make-up starts to run during the night.

WEAR SUNSCREEN EVERY DAY: This is the one that everyone complains about, but it’s the easiest thing to do. Pick up some moisturizer with SPF in it (I love Oil of Olay SPF 15 – It’s about $8.00 at any drugstore and works better than most of the high-end stuff). You can get burned even on a cloudy day, so make sure to apply this every morning so that you don’t have to think about your sun protection for the rest of the day. Furthermore, keep a sunscreen face stick (SPF 30 or 45) in your bag so that if you have to make an impromptu beach or pool run, you have something with you. These things weigh less than a cell phone and you can throw it in a pocket easily.

Remember, ladies: even wearing your sunglasses at night won’t cover up a bright red and peely face. So SPF it up, wear cover-ups, carry around shades, and remember that you can always get sunburned, so always be prepared!

Back in the day when Speedo one-pieces were cool, I had no interest in tanning. Although I fought through “sunscreen smear down” sessions with my mom, my skin was still, for the most part, shielded from the sun all summer long. It wasn’t until my friends started wearing bikinis and lots of Hawaiian tropic, that my Irish complexion got it’s first taste of sunburn. I quickly realized that getting the perfect tan wasn’t really in the cards for me…well unless I wanted to look like a leather handbag years later.

It’s scary how many times my skin has peeled, even blistered. I’ve accumulated many freckles, and one of them could easily be cancerous. At least that’s what I hear. Freckles appearing after a sunburn have been associated with an increased risk of melanoma skin cancer – the fatal kind. And even worse, it’s been estimated that nearly half of all Americans who live to age 65 will develop skin cancer at least once, according to MedicineNet.com.

Clearly we are all guilty of neglecting our skin for vanity’s sake. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy that bronzed glow? But ten, fifteen years from now, we’ll be kicking ourselves when the wrinkles, blotchy sun spots or melanoma develop.

So what can we do now to prevent further sun damage?

1. Always wear sunscreen, SPF 15 or higher, and reapply every 2 hours. Those of us who are fair-skinned, freckled, red-headed and blue-eyed really need to pay attention to this one since we are at more risk that our dark-skinned counterparts.
2. No more tanning beds. You know why!
3. Examine yourself regularly for abnormal skin growths or changes in existing moles and freckles. Self-examination can ensure an early detection of skin cancer.
4. Visit your dermatologist. It is recommended that everyone get a clinical skin exam annually, especially if you spot a new lump or mole.

I hate being a Debbie-downer before summer, but we need save our skin. So wear a higher SPF, go the self-tanning route — anything to keep that precious epidermis young and healthy.
