The Mortified Sessions is a hot new show whose basic mission is to get to know some of our favorite celebrities in a never-before-seen way. Maybe you’re yawning because you’ve already seen every episode of E! True Hollywood Story and Punk’d and every other show that orbits around celebrity lives so you think you know everything there is to know about all the best A and B list stars.

If you think a practiced interview is all there is to see about your favorite stars, it’s my turn to yawn.

The Mortified Sessions, premiering on the Sundance Channel, has been a 10-years-in-the-making project that aims to unearth childhood secrets and memories from everyone from celebs to CEOs. Armed with a shoebox full o’ memories, host David Nadelberg delights in all the awkward stages of growing up for each guest, all the best memories, and all the funniest photos.

Last night, armed with my pj’s and a blanket, I laid down and did my best to keep from “resting my eyes” to watch the show. Sundance set us over a sneak preview that featured interviews (spoiler alert!) with Ed Helms and Mo’Nique and at the risk of spoiling everything, here’s what I can tell you:

Ed Helms wasn’t always his confident, cool, funny guy self that we’re so used to seeing on screen in The Office and The Hangover. He was adorable in that you’re-so-ugly-you’re-cute kind of way (love you, Ed!) and he was clad in glasses ever since second grade. Since I don’t want to spoil all the fun, there is a really great confession about how Ed learned what a “hangover” is and a diary entry from Valentine’s Day where he confirms his commitment to the She-Man-Women-Hater’s Club.

Mo’Nique has, not surprisingly, always been as fabulous as she appears on screen and has always stayed true to her roots. When she was young, she changed her name from Monica to Mo’Nique to “boost her fabulousness” and she is the embodiment of self-pride. While her shoebox represented more heartfelt photos and memories than Ed’s funny awkward-stages photos, it was truly delightful to see someone who had a dream that they never lost sight of. Her senior prom photo showcased just how fabulous her hair truly is and when asked, she wanted to tell her 18-year-old self that even though she had a lot more work to do, she was “damn proud of you!” Which is the type of thing you wish all girls would tell themselves.

I’m sure I probably gave away one too many details (but seriously, wait ‘til you hear Ed talk about what a “hangover” meant to an elementary-aged boy,  but there is one thing that I really loved about The Mortified Sessions. The show caters to the interviewer-interviewee-esque genre while at the same time being nothing like the traditional format. The contents of the shoebox are unknown to each guest and it’s amazing just how fluidly the memories come back to each person. Dave has this uncanny ability to just let his guests talk, without interrupting them. Imagine sitting down in your kitchen going through old photos with your bestie. Dave, even though he doesn’t look or sound like your bestie, brings that same type of journalistic ability to light when he sits down with his guests.

I, for one, am already a fan and am definitely excited for the shows all-star lineup. They will be shoebox-ing memories, awkward photos, childhood jokes as well as more never-before-seen moments with Ed Helms, Eric Stonestreet, Mo’Nique, Will Forte, Cheryl Hines, Alanis Morissette, Megan Mullally and dozens more.

Isabella is doing famous mom Ingrid Bergman proud, and I’m totally not being facetious. In Green Porno (in which Rossellini is the only performer and co-director), our adorable star dresses up as various slimy creatures and shows how they do the nasty.

But, my God, is it cute! My personal favorite is “Bee.” Seriously, I hate bugs, but this is a must see.

Except, um, maybe not before sex. It’s funny, not hot. Unless you’re a serious perv. And then, by all means, bugger away.
