The Sundance Film Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year, especially for random D-List celebrities that haven’t gotten an invite to anything except Dr. Drew’s sober house since the late ’90s. I mean, what’s Andrew Keegan doing there?

But seriously, Sundance is a huge event for the movie industry and everyone who’s anyone flocks to Park City, Utah for all the free swag the exhibition of 200 new films, live music performances, panel discussions with filmmakers, innovative media installations, and, of course, ridiculous parties! And since we didn’t quite make the guest list (damn you, Keegan, for taking the last spot!), we’re forced to live vicariously through the fabulous people who did. So here’s a taste of the celebrity eye candy hanging out and hitting up the free stuff the slopes at this year’s Sundance Film Festival!

The Sundance Film Festival is in full swing in Utah and we’re jealous that we’re missing all the star-studded fun. I mean if you’re going to be freezing cold and surrounded by snow, you might as well be schmoozing it up with celebrities, too.

But since some of us have obligations, like getting an education, we wanted to offer you the next best thing: a limited edition Kenneth Cole Sundance Ski Vest.

A little vest background?

On the Sundance Institutes Board of Directors since 2003, Kenneth Cole has teamed up with the Sundance Institute for the seventh year by designing and donating vests that will be worn by Sundance Film Festival volunteers January 20-30. Kenneth Cole has also collaborated with Sundance Institute on the design of a limited edition retail version of the Sundance Film Festival volunteer vest which this year is a blue down filled vest which features channel quilting, welt pockets, and a functional glove hook. Now hold on a New York minute and stop the trip to Grandmother’s house, because double, double, toil, and trouble we have some Olsen news for you. We all know the Olsens had a brother. I mean the twins not-so-discretely attempted to sell him for a meager 50 cents back in the ’90s. But how did they keep a little sister (especially one as gorgeous and talented as this one) on the DL for so long? Perhaps Mary-Kate was hiding her under her “bohemian-homeless-chic” outfits for all those years?

Well the youngest Olsen (we think!?) is busting out from behind the scenes and kicking off her movie career at Sundance. While the films (yes, she’s got two Indie films under her braided belt) look intriguing, we have to say that they seem to lack a lot of the wonderful music and mysteries and dead mothers that made her sisters’ films such a hit.

The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver begin today, and athletes from around the globe are prepping for their fifteen minutes of fame. If you’re like me and will probably find yourself at an Olympics party this evening, check out this list of athletes who are sure to find their names in the headlines (or faces on a Wheaties box) in the near future.

1. Mirai Nagasu

Sport: Ladies’ figure skating
Nation: USA
Age: 16
Can she win? Perhaps she’ll medal.
What makes her someone to watch: There’s no pressure on her. The favorite to take the gold in this event is reigning world champ Kim Yu-Na from South Korea, and Nagasu placed second behind Rachael Flatt in the 2010 US National Championships. Much of the media focus will zero in on Flatt and Kim, leaving the door wide open for Nagasu (whose long program at Nationals was exuberant and graceful) to steal the show. Skeptical? Consider that all of the past four Olympic figure skating champions were not the favorite: Oksana Baiul, Tara Lipinski, Sarah Hughes, and Shizuka Arakawa.

2. Melissa Hollingsworth

Sport: Skeleton (think luge, but face down and head first!)
Nation: Canada
Age: 29
Can she win? Yes
What makes her someone to watch: In 2006, Melissa became the first Canadian to medal in skeleton at the Olympics, earning a bronze. Now she’s back to grab the top spot on the podium before a hometown crowd. 3. Shaun White

Sport: Snowboarding
Nation: USA
Age: 23
Can he win? Absolutely
Why he’s someone to watch: Well, you can’t miss him, with all that red hair. But besides that, he’s shown some awesome grit (recovering from smashing his head at the X-Games just weeks ago) and staying power: he’s the defending Olympic champ in the half-pipe.

4. Johnny Weir

Sport: Men’s figure skating
Nation: USA
Age: 25
Can he win? He’s a contender!
Why he is someone to watch: Johnny Weir is someone to watch both literally and figuratively. He is the new face of men’s figure skating, pushing himself beyond the rink to the realms of fashion and reality television, with his show “Be Good Johnny Weir” airing Mondays on the Sundance Channel. He refuses to be a role model, often sports outrageous and intricate costumes, and has a sassy mouth. Oh, did we mention he’s competing in the Olympics? Many figure skating enthusiasts will be watching Evan Lysacek, but we’ll be hanging on every jump, turn, sequin, and smirk of Weir.

5. Shani Davis

Sport: Speed Skating
Nation: USA
Age: 27
Can he win? No one is sure.
Why he is someone to watch: (Editor’s Note: He’s hot.) Shani made waves in 2006 as the first black athlete to win an individual Olympic gold medal, in the 1000m. Now he’s rousing headlines because of his fierce independence. Shani trains with no coach, no nutritionist, and no club. He refuses to practice with fellow American teammates. And he wants no part of being on an American relay team.  Furthermore, unlike most speed skaters who specialize in either long or short track, Shani does both. Can his independent training schedule earn him a medal again, or will his individualist attitude get the better of him?

Even though I was rushing as joke, I still took the actual process very seriously. I showed up to all the pre-rush meetings, attempted to make friends with my group, and agonized over the perfect outfit for the first day (the decision between jeans and leggings kept me up). As the first day of rush approached my only problem was that no one in my rush group liked me. I had assumed that because I was a senior they would all gather around me for my insider tips and Greek wisdom.

Instead they stayed away like my awkwardness was contagious. Because they all insisted on ignoring me, I would just sporadically leap into conversations without even turning around to face them. I’m pretty sure that even though they refused to show it, they appreciated my Wizard-of-Oz-like- advice on sophomore housing, the grossest dorm food, and hazing. I’m hopeful that one day I’ll overhear one of the freshman saying “that awkward-senior in my rush group did always say to stay away from quesadilla night at the dining hall.”

The first day of rush was everything I had imagined. I cracked myself up every time I got to tell someone I was a senior and gave them some new scenario for why I was rushing. My answers ranged between, “I just found out about Greek life,” to “I’ve been saving up dues for the past four years.” And then, right before I entered my 10th house, a representative from the Panhellenic council appeared and said that I was needed. I joked with her the whole way there, accusing them of ageism. And when I say we joked I mean I told jokes and she ignored me.

I was sat down at a table across from the council (which included ADULTS!). Everyone had their most serious faces on and I started to worry that at some point during the day I had blacked out and killed an entire sorority. I couldn’t imagine why else they were so angry with me. Then it began.

“Jenni, we’ve been informed that you’re making a documentary on rush. We need to know right now if you’re wired.”

I informed them I wasn’t, even though at that point I wish I had been. This would have been fabulous footage for my “documentary.” And even though part of me wanted to take the joke a little further and whisper into a pen “abort mission now,” I pinky swore to them that I was not wired.

While the United Nations of Sororities was interrogating me, every sorority was informed that the senior rushing was wired. While I at first laughed when I started getting the suspicious texts from greek friends asking if it was true, I soon realized that everyone now believed that I had purposefully betrayed them with my supposed hidden cameras.

So my joke took on a life of its own and I’ve now been accused of everything from a student newspaper expose to a Sundance documentary. It’s been almost two weeks now and even though I’ve stopped getting the point-and-stares (that’s THE senior) I’m still in amazement at how quickly my joke went so horribly wrong. At least I’ll be remembered after I graduate.

BTW, out of curiosity, I googled wires and discovered to be fully wired (not including the required van) cost around $37,000.

The “problem” with Dakota Fanning, in my opinion, is that she’s a REAL actress who happens to still be very young. This, of course, shouldn’t be a problem, but because Dakota’s abilities often overpower her actual age, people have a hard time figuring out what to do with her.

Dakota has always been able to bring to life realities in characters that I sincerely doubt most other actresses her age–or even older–could do. However, her desire to do more than simple ‘sweet and innocent’ roles have caused some people to cringe.

Her much talked about film that will be released this summer, “Hounddog“, has had most of the acting community biting their lips since it first showed up at Sundance last year. The controversy surrounding this film has been building, and in case you haven’t already heard, here’s why:

Twelve year old Dakota Fanning has taken on a role in this film that is not at all unreal, despite how disturbing it may or may not be to posh families across the country. The story is about a girl who has survived abuse on many levels. She, like so many other young girls and boys, turns to music.

Dakota’s role is a difficult one. It calls for her to adopt the nerve shaking characteristics of a girl who has been raped. And this is where the trouble with the film really begins. Many people don’t like the idea of a girl so young playing a role like this.

But to condemn this film because of this is downright outlandish to me. To dismiss support for this project because of this particular content is not only to simultaneously limit the artistic freedoms that filmmakers are entitled to have, but it’s also to turn a blind eye to a reality. Young girls in this country are sexually abused regardless of how well Americans are able to sweep the fact under the rug. If any young actress out there can take on this role maturely; it is Dakota.

I DO understand why the entire atmosphere of this film makes so many people so uncomfortable. However, I don’t feel as though it is fair for us to punish a young actress for aspiring to do more with her talent than a Disney production.

What’s your view?

You know what I love doing after a nice, long, relaxing weekend? Waking up to the sound of bells ringing and sweating Wallstreet dudes screaming from the rooftops.

That’s right. The stock market is falling. Faster than the drunken hook-ups at Sundance, faster than the disappearance of Amy Winehouse’s crack stash—just…fast.

Some people think we’re headed into a recession. Which is just the kind of news I love to hear after receiving my first monstrous student loan bill in the mail.
