Cupcakes, Sedaris Style

2090_recipe_cupcake.jpgAmy Sedaris is a funny, funny lady. If you don’t know her, just YouTube some of her Strangers with Candy episodes. She’ll do and say anything, and isn’t afraid to be the definition of “wacky”. She’s weird. She’s absurd. She’s well spoken. I love her.

As if I needed a reason to add another candle to my Sedaris shrine, Amy has also got the best recipe for cupcakes, ever. The directions are easy, the cupcakes taste good, and the way the recipe is written is pure Sedaris.

Amy Sedaris’ Cupcakes

1 1⁄2 sticks of unsalted butter

1 3⁄4 cups of sugar

Beat well, then add:

2 large eggs

2 Teaspoons of pure vanilla

1⁄2 teaspoon of salt

2 1⁄2 teaspoons of baking powder

2 1⁄2 cups of flour

1 1⁄4 cups of milk

Beat well, fill cups, and bake at 375 degrees for 18-20 minutes. You should get 24. I get 18, ’cause I’m doing something wrong. Read More »

Cranberry-Orange Walnut Bread

2059051719_cb31d396fa.jpg

My mom and I like to live vicariously through each other in terms of food by sending pictures and recipes back and forth. A couple of weeks ago, she sent me an e-mail using the most exclamation points I have ever seen within the space of a few paragraphs.

“This bread is SO GOOD!!!!!” she exclaimed. “If you make it, FREEZE half of it immediately for your own safety, otherwise you will eat the entire thing and become a balloon!!!!!!!!!!”

OK, Mom, I thought. No bread is that good. So I trekked to the grocery store to find some frozen cranberries (turns out that’s more difficult than you might think in the cranberry off-season, but they’re around in a few places) to make the bread.

I must have messed something up somehow, because my bread and muffins didn’t rise very well. Despite the fact that they ended up flat, they tasted GOOD. Mom wasn’t lying. Read More »

Rice Krispie treats turn me on. They’re easy, they’re delicious, and you can get away with calling them “breakfast”…

If you’re like me, and enjoy sugar first thing, try this recipe out for a morning snacker. Any excuse to eat dessert for breakfast is a good excuse to me, and thanks to Snap, Crackle and Pop…8:30 AM is going to taste just a little bit sweeter.

Quickie: Tuesday’s Sweet Escape

So it’s Tuesday. I mean, what the hell is Tuesday? It’s better than Monday, obvs, but it’s certainly less fun than Thursday, and nowhere near the euphoria of Friday.

If you’re like me, and need a little something to get you through these looong, dreary January days, and that little something often means sugar of some kind, then by all means, keep reading.

Because I think I’ve just found the best sweetstuff recipe EVER.

No sh*t. It just doesn’t get any better than Frappucino flavored CUPCAKES (!!!)

Chivalry is Dying…And WE Are Killing It.

24214322.jpg

Once upon a time, long after the feminist revolution dawned and yet before we could spell the word–let alone understand it–we were little girls. We knew we were equals to boys and no one was going to tell us we weren’t going to play kickball at recess with the toughest of them.

But if little Johnny knocked me over and didn’t stop to smile and help me up, well, then I told all of my friends he was a jerk. And this idea of “I’m as good as you so treat me like a princess” found itself a little home in our confused minds and it took over…without an invitation.

As we awkwardly tiptoed into the land of dating, this entire concept, fraudulent as it seems, was still very real. I’ve always been independent, strong, confident, smart (maybe a little full of myself, too), and was taught to believe that no guy could outdo me in ANYthing. So why did my mom tell me to let Eric pay for dinner on my first date? Why did my friends think it was “sweet” that he opened doors for me? How can we truly be equals if chivalry is still a card in this game? Read More »

Shot of the Week: Banana Split

banana splitSometimes, when it comes to our drinks, all we want is simplicity.

Simple ingredients, easy to make, tasty, and above all—fun. Whether you’re out with your girls or hanging inside the dorm celebrating the end of a horrible midterm, fun shots that won’t break the bank are the way to go.

Here’s a two-ingredient shot that tastes awesome. It’s named after one of the best ice cream treats of all time, and, vodka has almost no carbs, so you can have your treat without feeling guilty.

…Although I would never advocate for the total elimination of ice cream from your diet. Ice cream is holy.

Banana Split

1 oz. banana liqueur

1 oz. good quality vodka*

maraschino cherries (optional)

Add the liqueur to your shot glass after the vodka. Stir once and drink. Bite into a maraschino cherry afterwards to take some of the edge off. Read More »

Shot of the Week: Gummy Bear

gummi bearsSometimes, a drink is called something so preposterous, so stupid, it’s obvious that whoever created it gave it a name after they tried 7 versions.

Sometimes, the actual ingredients are the unbelievable part.

You want me to combine cream, vodka, and cough syrup together? Who’s actually tasted this?

Most of the time, the answer is no one, but today, that’s not the case.

I had heard about this recipe, but never actually tried it…until the day arrived when there was nothing left to drink the fridge besides a bottle of Gatorade someone had left and a bottle of raspberry vodka the roommate and I had received as a present.

“Well” I thought, “now’s the time.”

Sure, it was sweet, but it was also light and tart—a nice thing to sip over ice while waiting for the night to start. Read More »
