Much like everything else in a college girl’s life (finding the perfect pair of jeans, balancing relationships, deciding where to party, etc.), sugar seems complicated. And I’m sick of complicated, so I’m going to break it down for you.
Should you go for natural or artificial? Low-cal or all natural? Corn syrup or aspartame? Honey or agave nectar?
Here’s your guide to satisfying your sweet tooth in the healthiest way possible.
What It’s Called
There are secret code names for sugar that you’ll find in everything from crackers to vegetables. Look for: Sucrose, Fructose, Glucose, Corn Sugar, Sorbitol, Dextrose, Maltose, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Aspartame, Lactose… and more.
What It Does To Your Body
Carbs and sugars turn into glucose, which gives us energy to function. Glucose determines your blood sugar level, which affects your appetite, emotions, athletic performance, and more. You do not want to screw with this system – ideally, you want your blood sugar level to stay pretty even all the time. Usually people do this by eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and things that get metabolized at a steady rate in your body.

Yesterday, Slender wine, a zero calorie wine, was handed out at the Oscars in the presenter gift bags. Bottled by the Chateau Thomas Winery in Indiana, celebrities had the chance to get wasted without growing too wide for their couture dresses! The winery boasts that Slender has no sugar, no carbs and no fat and took 2 years to develop. Blogs suggest it has zero calories.
Zero calories!?
This wine sounds like a dream come true, but I just don’t understand how on earth Slender’s claims could be possible. How can there be no carbs? And no calories? (Sugar alcohol is considered a carb and is metabolized the same as a real sugar.) But the makers continue to tout the amazing benefits of Slender: it has no calories (in the sweetener), has a 0 Glycemic index, contains no carbohydrates, has the identical flavor spectrum as Sucrose (sugar), has no aftertaste, does not affect insulin levels, and has zero side effects (because it cannot be metabolized by the human body).
It is basically every college girls’ dream: the ability to drink without all those pesky calories? And for only $10.99 on their website you can try this god-sent beverage. If you’re as addicted to caffeine as I am, you are probably broke (not to mention a real gem in the early morning hours). But, like any good junkie, you’re more than willing to flip the couch cushions in search of a few quarters, or sell your kidney to pay for a grande White Chocolate Mocha on your way to school.
I have to admit, I’m a huge Starbucks fan, and am usually fine with shelling out a few extra dollars to indulge in something tastier than Folgers. Still, I need a new winter wardrobe… so I’m weaning myself off of overpriced coffee drinks (that taste like dessert) and makin’ my coffee at home.
I know it’s a bold move, but after playing around a bit I have learned a few things: 1) Making your own coffee can save you billions, and 2) It is really, really easy. Here are a few tips:
1. Flavor it Up.
Whenever I make my own coffee, no matter how good the brand, or how carefully I measure the coffee-to-water ratio, it always seems to taste like dirt. My solution? Flavor, flavor, flavor. Syrup, syrup, Equal, syrup. Seriously, who just gets a latte from Starbucks? Everyone has their signature: the Pumpkin Latte, Caramel Macchiato, White Chocolate Mocha…what do they have in common? Manufactured taste. Instead of shelling out $4-$5 a day for Starbucks, buy a bottle of Torani Syrups.
