Jezebel did a post this week on the most ridiculous college classes. So I began reminiscing on the most interesting and fun classes I took these past two years in college. While many of my courses were focused toward my majors and completing my GE’s, I always try to plan out my schedule so I can take one fun class each year. At Syracuse, there’s one course that always gets full enrollment and by full I mean more than 300+ students. Human Sexuality with Joseph Fanelli on Wednesday and Thursday nights was probably the highlight of my sophomore year during the fall. Not only because everyone there wanted to be there, but JP (his nickname) was so chill that he practically didn’t care what anyone did as long as we showed up. The course is pretty self-explanatory, but I gotta say, every year he shows a birthing video to the class, and every year someone walks out in the middle and throws up in the restroom. Yeah….it really makes you never want to have babies again when you see a baby literally EMERGE from someone’s vagina.

Another course I plan to take my senior year is Beer and Wine. Yes, as the title suggests, you basically sit in a classroom and pretend you’re sophisticated enough to know what the hell you’re drinking. Pinot Grigio? Sure! Chardonnay? Why not? Blue Moon? With a slice of orange, please. People usually leave class each week with a light buzz around mid-afternoon. Which is pretty normal for college students…so why not get credit for it? They do require everyone to be 21 before they can take the class. I can fully justify this course by telling myself that by taking Beer and Wine, I’m opening myself to a different class of sophistication. Boo-yah college.

Last but not least, another class I’m looking forward in taking is African Dancing. Another class that is pretty self-explanatory but apparently, people say this is a course that actually takes major effort. Flailing arms and flowing hair aside, I’m hoping the instructor will play some Simba-like music. That always gets my blood flowin’.

1. Basketball Record

2. Mascot Matchup

Georgetown: The university admits it cannot trace the precise origins of who coined the school nickname, but it is known that the Georgetown Hoyas (represented by a bulldog) take the name from a Latin saying, “Hoya Saxa!” meaning “What rocks!” It’s believed that the saying was used to describe the stonewall-like defenses of Georgetown’s athletics.
Syracuse: Formerly known as the Orangemen and Orangewomen, Syracuse athletes were officially labeled “The Orange” in 2004. The ‘Cuse nickname is simply derived from the vibrant tangerine hue of the school color.

3. Distinguished Programs

Georgetown: Arguably the best program in international relations in the country, the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service has brought generations of global leaders to the helm, including Bill Clinton and King Abdullah II of Jordan.
Syracuse: The Newhouse School of Public Communications is synonymous with excellence in communications and journalism. If your dream is to see your byline alongside those of alums Steve Kroft and Bob Costas,  then Syracuse is for you!

Three credits to:  Georgetown, whose program has the edge of being located in the capital of the free world.

4. Ass-Kicking Alumni

Georgetown: Patrick Ewing, Bradley Cooper (drool), Allen Iverson (attended)
Syracuse: Betsey Johnson, Aaron Sorkin, Carmello Anthony (attended)

Three credits to:  A tie! Both schools bost plenty more A-list alums from a wide variety of disciplines, and these are but a few selections. Bravo!

And the diploma goes to: Georgetown. Though the Orange give a strong showing as the basketball series leader, the Hoyas come out on top. Go Hoyas!

I’ve started preparing for my post graduation depression/emo stage. I’ve bought the tissue boxes and I’ve prepared the soundtrack (Seasons of Love on repeat). But I also made a proactive step of creating a list of things that I know I absolutely won’t miss- that way when I’m putting on my fifth layer of black eyeliner and tattooing tears on my face I’ll remember that there were some bad things about college.

STUDYING

I always start my studying with a lot of energy and excitement. I have blank flashcards stacked next to fresh pens and my unwrapped books. I put on my fake glasses and start poring over the material faster than I can highlight. Three minutes into this invigorating “studying” process I’m bored. I only have two more tests left and then I will never ever have to study ever again. Never again will I have to eat breakfast, check my e-mail, and simultaneously flip flashcards and mumble answers to myself.

GROUP PROJECTS

I’m currently in the process of making a student film with three of my (soon to be former) friends. It’s a disaster. Nothing is worse than four creative unorganized people who always think they’re right. I’m a control freak so I like to do things my own way and get things done on my own schedule. Whenever I complain to people about how much I hate group projects they always bring up that I will have to work “well” with people for the rest of my life. I disagree. Hermits never do group projects. And hermit is a new profession that I’m currently researching.

MY FURNITURE FROM THE PAST FOUR YEARS

When I did my Bed, Bath, and Beyond shopping spree four years ago my Mom kept saying, “I hope you love this stuff because you’re going to have it for the next four years.” I rolled my eyes at her and was like duh I’ll always want a neon pink trash can and a Hawaiian print bed spread. And now four years later I still do have all the same things that I came to college with so long ago (except for the whiteboard that someone drew a permanent marker penis on the 2nd night of college). I’m so sick of staring at my lime green shoe organizer and high school pictures (don’t even recognize those people anymore) and I’m insanely excited to start throwing all that stuff away.

MY LONG COAT

Syracuse is downright freezing and I’ve never regretted buying my floor-length coat that’s big enough to not only serve as my winter jacket but also as a well-insulated hour for four. However I now can’t stand the sight of it. I’m not sure what exactly I’m going to with it yet. I’m debating between turning it into a comforter for a king-sized bed or ripping it open and taking out all the down-feathers to make myself real wings. Either way I never want to see it ever again.

So while my list isn’t exactly complete yet (I still have to add a few people’s names) it’s definitely a start for my post-graduation-recovery.

Four years ago I ran outside as the first flakes fell from the sky. I spun around and around with my tongue out reveling in the snow not because it came naturally but because that’s what people always do in the movies. I stayed spinning until a bus pulled up in front of the dorm, almost ran me over, and my friend asked me to come inside and stop embarrassing myself. Even as the winter wore on I got delight out of hearing the crunching snow beneath my feet and writing my name over and over again on ever snowy surface.

But nothing good can ever last and now as the first snow falls, I’m sitting inside wrapped in fourteen layers chugging a large coffee. I made a list of everything in the kitchen and rationed it out so we can survive five months without having to go outside and to the supermarket once. I haven’t been this prepared with food since I won the Oregon Trail in fifth grade.

So I guess the magic of snow has worn off. The first sign was probably when I put a hat on and everything remarked that I looked unmistakeably like a penis. The second sign is when my boots stopped working and I had to wrap plastic bags around my feet so the 3-foot ice puddle wouldn’t give me hypothermia. The third sign was when I made a snowman last year and someone ate the skittle eyes. Ever since then I just can’t look at snow the same way.

So here goes hibernation ’09. It should be a blast.

Looks like he forgot all about the little ditty that made his band famous and spent the money buying a ton of cocaine and marijuana. Page was arrested in New York last week for possession of a controlled substance.

The best part? When the cops showed up, Page and his female friend tried to hide the mound of coke under a napkin. I can’t believe that didn’t work! That’s how I hid a quarter pound of parmesan cheese when I spilled it at Pizza Hut 10-years ago. I guess the Syracuse PD are a little more thorough than the hapless staff at my local “Italian bistro.”

The news of this arrest is disappointing but not exactly surprising. Despite putting out a very good last effort and a popular kids album, Barenaked Ladies have been trying to run away from irrelevancy since “Pinch Me.” It looks like it finally caught up to them.

Page is out of jail already after paying $10,000 for bail. He is due back in court on Thursday and with the evidence against him, this may not go so well.

Remember Steve; they don’t serve Kraft Dinner in prison…unless Kraft Dinner is a very unfortunate euphemism for cellmate stabbings/rape.
