Whew! What a year, right? We saw it all: Britney’s bald head, governors getting it on with prostitutes, a new Facebook, the collapse of Wall Street, the rise and fall of Sarah Palin, a horrifying plane crash that killed some and spared others, the election of our first black president (!!), lots of young mommies, and a whole lot more that I drank too much to remember.

Things were busy over here, too. We discovered the guys not worth holding onto, and the perfect vibrator that is. We began to understand why crazy sex positions are totally worth it, and why sex on the beach is a must-do for 2009.

We found a totally hot new band that will change the way you think about music, learned the 14 truths about men, and laughed with the funniest ladies out there.

We found out that guys get Brazilians (?), argued the merit of leggings, and filled our entire closet with new clothes….for free!

We took our first trip to the gyno, learned a ton of new euphemisms for sex, and sought out some not-so-obvious places to meet a man. We looked back at our favorite things from middle school.

We hated/loved Facebook.

And we dipped our toes in the Cougar pool.

2008 was a good year. Here’s hoping 2009 can be as much fun (both in the bedroom and out of it).

Tally Hall: Embrace the Wonky Rock

Everyone knows someone in a band. Those guys that play in the basement. That band that played at every frat party. Your guy friends who are obsessed with Rock Band. You go to their shows, you rock out to the covers they play and you put them in your list of favorites on Facebook. Sure, you like them, but they’re really nothing more than a group of guys playing some instruments in between bong hits.

I knew a group like that. Or, at least I used to. Now that band has blown up, gotten a record deal and are touring the country. Their name is Tally Hall and they are some of most talented musicians I have ever heard.

And I am not just saying that.

Their first video – done completely by themselves – was a feature on YouTube last month. Their songs have been on the Real World and The O.C. (back when that show actually meant something) and their first album, Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum, has received quite a bit of well-deserved praise.

They describe their sound as “wonky rock,” which you have to hear to understand. Their lyrics are catchy, smart and fun and set to music of bass, guitar, drums, keyboard and the occasional xylophone and cowbell. The guys of Tally Hall also happen to be absolutely adorable, hilarious and talented at more than just throwing down a tune.

Tally Hall’s website is chock full of video shorts and an up-coming web series that highlights their life on the road as well as their ability to make anyone laugh. This band is the real deal and everyone needs to listen to what they have to say….er…sing.

Check out their video below and find out when Tally Hall is coming to a city near you. The tickets are cheap and the shows are intimate, but I have a feeling it won’t be that way for long.

Is That Really Necessary?!… Numero Dos

Welcome back to my weekly rant on all things bothersome. Things that we all experience, that we often think: “Whyyyy?? Is that really necessary?!”

This week: claiming rights to a band.

Example: The Fray, Maroon 5, Corinne Bailey Rae, The Backstreet Boys, Jesse Palter, Madonna, Ok-Go Tally Hall.

Some of these musicians you’ve heard of- some maybe not… some are or were huge stars, some are unsigned. Yet, if you listen to any of these artists’ songs in front of another person a conversation like this will ultimately ensue:

You: “How good is this song?”

ITRNO (Is That Really Necessary Offender): “Oh, this song? Yeah, this song is good, but I’m so sick of it now. I started listening to The Fray loooong before they were signed to a major label and way before their CD was available to the public. In fact, I knew every single word to this song before they even wrote it. So, ha! I am so cool. Way cooler than you because I listened to this band first.”

Okay, so maybe the last half was a teeny-tiny bit of an exaggeration, but you know that’s exactly what they are thinking and just not saying it outloud!

I don’t get these people! Do they want a cookie or a medal because they knew of a song or new artist first?!

I’ll say it: These people’s songs become massive hits for a reason. Obviously they are talented, or know how to write catchy lyrics (or they have others working for them who do-but that’s neither here nor there). And NOBODY, I repeat, NOBODY cares if you listened to them first.

Do you think that Adam Levine cares to hear that you knew his songs before he was signed? Absolutely not. Chances are, he is more grateful to the most recent person who bought his most recent album- because that person is putting money into his pocket right now (especially with the downfall of the music industry in the past few years).

So please, save your breath and save me from wanting to pull my hair out and just nod your head in agreement that this song is in fact, rockout-able.

I mean really, that whole speech where you proclaim your long history of adoration? Is That Really Necessary?

I think a big huge not.
