Why it pays to be single for the holidays

The holiday season, I’ve come to realize, is all about the traditions. Baking cookies. Listening to festive music. Wrapping presents. Eating way too much in a way too short amount of time. Shopping for days. Decorating. It wouldn’t be Christmas without all of it.

But really, probably my favorite Christmas tradition is the endless Christmas movies. It starts on Thanksgiving day with March of the Wooden Soldiers and continues through the New Year. The perfect excuse for movie marathons and munching on sweets, all I really want to do is grab some hot chocolate and those sugar cookies I bought baked, and settle down with one of my favorite Christmas movies.  Any of these will do.

There are a lot of perks to experiencing Halloween as a college student, that’s a given. But remember Halloween as a little kid? When you looked forward to more than the drinking games and the slutty sexy costumes?

Sure, I loved the costumes, and the candy, and the pumpkin carvings, but for me it was really all about the movies. And not those crazy, creepy, scary ones either, but the fun ones. You know, the ones about friendly ghosts and clumsy witches and great pumpkins…
Allow me to refresh your memory…

10. Beetlejuice. Originally this one was going to be higher up on the list. But as I rediscovered the plot of this Halloween time horror, I realized it was actually kind of creepy. Way to get your big break though, Winona Ryder.

9. The Little Vampire. Think back, way back. Before Twilight. Before Edward Cullen. Before vampires were ever associated with glitter. Remember when you actually thought vampires were kind of scary? It made the idea of a little boy being BFFs with a vampire so much cooler.

8. Casper. The friendly ghost. The special effects may not seem as cool as they used to, but it’s still worth a re-watch. Upon looking this one up on IMDb I discovered there was actually a plot behind this movie. No, I’m not going to tell you what it was. Watch it; you won’t be disappointed.

7. Underwraps. A favorite in my household growing up. My brother was obsessed with it. And it didn’t help that the Disney channel aired it every other day that first year it came out. We watched it over and over (and over) until I knew the lines by heart. Never could quite get use to the fact that they named the mummy Harold, though.

6. The Nightmare Before Christmas. Come on. It’s Tim Burton. And a classic. And I don’t care what those brats are saying today, it will always be better than The Corpse Bride. End of discussion.

5. Double, Double Toil and Trouble. The Olsen twins have a movie for every occasion, and Halloween is no exception. Back in the day I couldn’t get enough of these two. But now I kind of wonder how Shakespeare would feel about Mary Kate and Ashley stealing his lines…

4. Halloweentown. Yes, another Disney channel original movie. But I can’t help myself. These people know how to do Halloween. After seeing this movie, I secretly hoped that one day I would “come of age,” and find out I had magical powers too. (Reading the Harry Potter books shortly after did nothing to help this notion disappear.)

3. The Worst Witch. My personal favorite. Poor Mildred Hubble, things never seemed to go right for her. But her life wasn’t all bad, I mean she had teachers named Miss Cackle, and Miss Spellbinder, and a cute little grey cat. And she had her own theme song…Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the worst witch of them all?

2. It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown, much like the Olsen twins, has a movie for every occasion, and unlike the Olsen twins, every one of his holiday specials is worth watching. Linus and Sally spend the night in a pumpkin patch. Charlie Brown gets rocks in his trick or treat bag, and Lucky is just plain mean. Business as usual.

1. Hocus Pocus. The best Halloween movie of all time. It’s a fact. The other night, one of my friends posted on Facebook that she was watching it. The status now has 28 comments, all with various versions of “best movie ever,” and “OMG I love that movie,” along with actual quotes from the movie. Plus, I’m sure I wasn’t the only one with a crush on Max, right?

So what do you think, ladies? Did I get all of your favorites? Which ones did I forget? There’s no limit on childhood memories. So dust off those VCRs, pull out those old VHS tapes, grab some candy corn and start reminiscing.

Since that day I’ve noticed that, more often than not, Renata is right – it’s easier to look chic if you’re slender. There are examples of this all over Hollywood. Consider Exhibit A, Hilary Duff. Back in the day, H. Duffs was a cute kid who certainly wasn’t fat, but definitely didn’t have that sleek boney look that we associate with Hollywood starlets. She was filled-out, normal-looking. Then one day she dropped about fifteen pounds, and all of a sudden she looked…glamorous. Elegant. Less like a kid and more like a chic fashionista woman. And while gossip magazines and news reports condemned her for looking sickly and setting a bad example for girls, she was still appearing on the cover of high-fashion magazines and being featured in designer ads like never before.

Because skinny = style.

We can attribute this national mentality to the media: for years, models and stars have gotten thinner and thinner until they’ve reached the point where many of them are barely more than skeletons wearing skin-suits. The image of ultimate high fashion that we’re presented with is that of the mutant waif, forty pounds thinner than an average person of the same height, gliding around A-list events like an apparition wearing Proenza Schouler. But why? What made the Fashion Powers That Be decide that scrawny is synonymous with chic?

I’ve come to the conclusion it’s a little thing I like to call the Clothes Hanger Effect. Once while watching a piece on the Today show about Nicole Ritchie being named Best Dressed by People magazine, the “style expert” guest commenting on the piece made mention of the fact that, since losing all that weight, Nicole Ritchie has become not much more than a hanger for designer clothing. And if you look at pictures of her, this is definitely true; the girl has no hips, tiny tits, no figure to “interfere” with the lines of the garment. It’s like she’s a walking outfit armature instead of a person. It’s the same thing on the runway. Ninety-nine percent of the time, models look nothing like women and more like weirdo mannequins. They’re gaunt, pale, washed out, alien; but damn, look at how great that Stella McCartney dress looks!

Now, I’m not trying to condemn skinny girls by any means. If you’re a skinny girl, and you like being a skinny girl, rock on. Being happy and comfortable with your body is what it’s all about (or so they tell me in 7th grade sex-ed). I’m just saying that next time you look at pictures of the Olsen twins and start berating yourself for eating that burrito last night, stop and ask yourself; am I a woman, or an aspiring clothes hanger?

I mean, who would win in a fight? The Olsens, or another up-and-coming teen sensation? Let’s disscuss…

Hilary may have a mean snarl with those new veneers of hers, but she’s too dainty to chip her manicure. The Olsens are all about the chippy nails, missed showers and ratty hair. KO H. Duff down.

Miley Cyrus vs. The Olsen Twins

The only thing scarier than Hannah Montana are her damn fans. Hannah has yet to acquire the grit necessary to take an Olsen, but she does have the posse. Before Miley could get a bruise, there would be eight hundred 12-year-olds wielding machetes ready to hack off some Olsen body part. Miley wins, hands down. KO Olsens down.

So in the ring, The Olsens have one win, which is a devastating LOW considering their alleged power.

Let’s hope that someone can force feed them a protein shake or some Muscle Milk, just in case it ever gets physical…

Frightening, right?

According to the ever-scandalous Page Six, Ashley Olsen and Lance Armstrong were seen together at the Gramercy Park Hotel’s bar on Monday night “making out” while Ashley “sat on Lance’s lap”.

The pair, 21 and 36, have a 15-year age difference between them and about a billion Ex’s. Armstrong was recently linked to Sheryl Crow and designer Tory Burch, while Ashley seems to have dated pretty much any guy who thinks she’s cool.

The creepiest part about this pairing is the fact that Lance Armstrong always struck me as a super-responsible, super cool guy. Something about winning 7 Tour de Frances and beating cancer made him seem laid back and experienced, a dude who sought out cool, traveled friends and mature women. To see him making out with Ashley Olsen crushes everything I (we?) previously thought.

Plus…ew.

The girl doesn’t seem like she could keep up with a sloth walking down the street, let alone a world famous cyclist who apparently doesn’t understand the word tired.

I mean, what is the attraction?

Guess this is a lesson in the dangers of idolization; let the media make you believe someone is more than human, and your heart has that much farther to fall when you see them making out with a 21-year-old multimillion dollar bag-lady wannabe.

Ugh. Where’s my remote? I gotta find a scary movie to take the terrifying image of an Ashley Olsen make-out sesh from my mind.

“We are no longer doing movies with women in the lead” Robinov was quoted as saying this week, using two recent less-than-stellar female driven films (The Brave One, staring Jodie Foster, and The Invasion, starring Nicole Kidman) as evidence for his claims.

What. The. F*ck? Um, what year is this???

Robinov is just convinced the reason neither film did well with audiences is because a woman was in the lead.

Apparently, the options of bad writing, convoluted plots, and poorly conceived advertising are not viable, and the only way to make sure a movie of his never bombs again is to make sure the leads are always sans boobs and vagina.

Movies with male leads bomb all the time, but Robinov doesn’t care about that obvious fact, nor does he seem to remember the fantastic success of Mean Girls, The Devil Wears Prada, Erin Brockovich, or anything helmed by the Olsen Twins.

Do women often headline films by themselves? No. But it’s not because they don’t have the same drawing power as men, it’s because chauvinists like Robinov are given the ability to “no longer do movies” in which the star is a female.

Men have controlled Hollywood for decades, and every time a guy utters something as disgusting as Robinov’s words and is not challenged, the male hold only increases.

If a movie is rotten, it really doesn’t matter who’s in the lead.
