Normally for the Weekly 10, I find myself counting down things that piss me off. You know, like phrases that suck and uninspired Halloween costumes. So I’ve decided to give you a mix tape for putting up with me airing my grievances Letterman-style.

However, this mixtape is extra mixy. I present to you: my top ten favorite mashups. Wikipedia defines a mashup as, “a song or composition created by blending two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another.”  Basically smushing two songs together to make an even cooler one.

Yeah, I was inspired by last week’s episode of Glee; how could you not be? That show is so. damn. good.

10. “Womanizer” Britney Spears & Lily Allen
Even if she “retired from music,” I still  heart Lily Allen and Britney will always have a special place in my heart. Mixing a little Lily with a lot of Womanizer lyrics? Spice Girls have nothing on fierce duo.

Cruel Intentions finale song plus my fave, Jay? I’ll take it.

6. “Halo and Walking on Sunshine” Performed by the cast of Glee.
The very song that inspired me to spend 6 hours searching for other mashups online and create this splendid list.

5. “Every Car You Chase” The Police & Snow Patrol (Mixed by Party Ben)
Unexpectedly amazing.

4. “Hotel Room Game” Lady Gaga & Pitbull
Yes, Lady Gaga is a crazy biatch. We love her anyway. We also love Pitbull. And he loves us back. Two super catchy pop songs, one even catchier mash-up.

3. Anything off the Grey album
Black Album (Jay-Z) + White Album (The Beatles) = Incredible. I guess that’s what happens when you put two music legends together. I love the song, “What More Can I Say” with “As My Guitar Gently Weeps,” but the whole album is simply amazing. Gotta love Dangermouse.

2. Girl Talk
Every song rules, can’t pick just one; Gregg Gillis is all kinds of brilliant.

1 and a half. “Stand Up and Ring My Doorbell” White Stripes and Ludacris (Mashed by DJ Riko)
Because I couldn’t narrow it down to just ten, especially when Ludacris is involved. Sick beat.

1. “Can I Get Get Low” Lil’ Jon and Junior Senior
Okay, so I may be a little biased because “Get Low” might be my song if I were to do a wedding “Forever” style. Kidding. Sorta. But seriously, blend this throwback Lil Jon with the bouncy Junior Senior and you get perfection. Not to mention it makes Lil Jon slightly more tolerable for people who don’t understand his artistic genius.

Walking to school, iPod. Sitting on the subway, iPod. Waiting for class to start, iPod. Grocery shopping, iPod. I never went anywhere without music.

There’s lots of reasons I chose music over realty, strange men telling me I should be their girlfriend at 8:30 AM certainly being one of them, but the easiest answer is that I didn’t really think there was much the world could offer me while I was alone. Walking by yourself can be a semi-lonely activity, especially if you’ve got a long way to go and don’t see many friendly faces on your way there.

So, I was plugged in. Walking quickly and keeping my face blank (looking too friendly in the city is sometimes an open invitation for crazy people to ask you to pet their plastic snake), I spent my days forging ahead and allowing The Police to soundtrack my life.

Until I overheard a conversation that changed everything.

Having forgotten my headphones that morning, I was walking to school without musical aid. It was the first time in a long while I had ventured out without programmable audio, and I was trying to figure out how to function, when I accidentally eavesdropped on two men walking ahead of me.

“See, there goes another one! Another beautiful girl with her goddamn headphones on!” The guy in front of me hit his friend in frustration. “How am I ever supposed to start conversations with pretty strangers if they block their ears all the time?!”

“I’ve noticed that,” the second, less angry and animated man agreed. “These chicks got their headphones on all the time now. They don’t even look up on the subway anymore.”

“That’s why I haven’t bought an iPod yet. Because I crave random social interaction. Well, that and because Apple is a giant conglomerate that’s poised to steal this Nation’s soul.”

As the duo turned the corner, I waited for the Walk sign to give me the go-ahead and thought about what I had just heard. Before the first guy had dived into schizophrenia, he had been making sense sense. How do you start a conversation with someone who’s already occupied?

I walked up Second Avenue and realized I was one of those girls who turned her Kelly Clarkson up and stared at the ground while she rode the subway. How many conversations with cute boys had I inadvertently avoided? How many sweet faces had I accidentally ignored?

I began to forget my headphones on purpose. I began to ride the subway sans iPod or book, and walked the streets of New York with my eyes and ears open (happily, that weird guy with the plastic snake had moved on to avenues elsewhere). Soon, I was hearing intriguing conversations, noticing people in a way I had never noticed before, and stumbling across more good-looking guys than I had ever thought existed.

The schizophrenic Hipster had been right. The world is a whole lot more interesting when you leave your iPod at home.

These days, I rarely listen to anything while walking, and whip out the trusty Apple soul-stealer during long trips only. It’s gotten to the point where having music in my ears feels constricting.

And yes, I’ve had some conversations with cute strangers. I’ve also had some conversations with insane and annoying strangers—but you know, it’s all part of the experience.

…I mean, how many times in a person’s life do they get to listen to an old woman explain how the zucchinis in Whole Foods “whisper through their skin” to help her pick out lottery numbers? My guess is only once.

Oy. Now I sound like I’ve gone a little granola too.

Anyways, I have become quite conscious of the effects I have on the environment and have been taking strides to change. I have made small changes – like bringing my own travel mug to coffee shops – and I have made big changes – like replacing my gas guzzler with a more fuel efficient, Jetta.

I haven’t always been this way. In fact, it took a little man named Al Gore to really make me stop and smell the roses…and realize that my giant SUV and constant runs to Starbucks could make those roses obsolete one day soon. And even though people make fun of me for being earthy (like my paper-plate loving brother) or hate me for forcing new conservation tactics (like my printer loving bosses), I really do feel like I am making a difference.

And clearly I am not alone.

In fact, in honor of this beautiful planet we call home, a lot of super fab people are getting together on July 7th to make some sweet, sweet music while spreading awareness of environmental issues.

The concert is called Live Earth and it features musical artists playing concerts in 8 different countries worldwide. And I am not talking some random American Idol cast-offs. I am talking about people like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Mayer, Smashing Pumpkins, Madonna and more. This event is gonna be hot (which is mildly appropriate since its all about Global Warming).

Bonnaroo: June 14-17, Manchester, Tennessee

Do you ever wish you should stumble through makeshift tents erected out of multi-colored tapestries interspersed with North Face nylon numbers, reeking of red wine, special brownie crumbs on your dirty t-shirt, a blunt in one hand and a delicious vegan burrito in the other? Well you best get packing and head down to Tennessee to join the throngs of drug addled music lovers.

Technically, it’s the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, but if you call it by its full name be prepared to be mocked by red-eyed hippies with dreadlocks. It’s a four-day, multi-stage camping festival that brings artists of all different genres, from the Police to Tool (both of which are playing this year, oh yes). Besides the music, on the festival site is a classic arcade, cinema, silent disco (which sounds more than a little awk), comedy club, theater performers, and a beer festival (oh hells yes).

For its sweet vibe, smooth logistics, and crazy entertainment options, Rolling Stone named the fest one of the 50 moments that changed the history of rock and roll. Come on, you need to get a piece of this action.
