When I’m getting ready to go out during the fall, I find myself having to choose between wearing the cute dress I’ve been dying to wear but being freezing with bare legs…or choosing a “tights appropriate” dress. It seems like that supercuteIcannotwaittowear dress never quite works with tights. It’s either too stretchy and shows tight lines on my stomach, turns frumpy when I throw tights on, or just isn’t the right color. And, to make matters worse, I’m perpetually cold. All the time.
Frankly, I’m over freezing my ass off when it starts getting chilly. My leather jacket can only do so much for the body temp. You know? Read More »

[Welcome to Celebrity Chic on the Cheap, where our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities (like, duh, Nicole Richie) are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you don’t have to.]
Jessica Szohr totally gets the short end of the Gossip Girl stick. Her character, Vanessa Abrams, is one of thee most obnoxious, insufferable, thoroughly unpleasant characters on the show. Considering how none of those characters are people anyone would want to know in real life, that is quite a feat.
But just because Jessica’s character completely sucks doesn’t mean that Jessica deserves to be as D-list as she is. I mean, she’s dating Ed Westwick, so she’s probably a pretty cool chick. Not only that, but her sense of style is amazeballs. (No joke, are all of the GG actresses must be contractually obligated to be as fierce off set as they are on?) Jessica combines edgy, feminine, and trendy pieces to create a banging, fun, fresh aesthetic that is to die for. Or, you know, to scour discount racks for… Read More »

It’s almost the end of the year. As you’re making your New Year’s resolution list, here’s something to think about: punching up your style for 2011.
If you have “budget better” on your list, this might seem like it will counter a resolution to save money, but it doesn’t have to. An easy way to add a little punch to your wardrobe is with accessories! With a pair of patterned tights you can easily change the appearance of your go-to black dress. With a sparkly headband you can add some interest to your in-dire-need-of-a-cut hairstyle. Though Blair Waldorf-esque bow headbands may seem so Constance Billards, adding one with a lot of bling is a way to stray from that UES image.
By adding accessories from head to toe, you can add a lot of pizzaz to an otherwise basic outfit. And I’ve got 15 items to scoop up just in time for the New Year. Read More »

I don’t think much about Ashley Olsen these days (with the exception of when I catch Full House reruns and roll my eyes at how obnoxious Michelle Tanner is). She is the CEO of two fashion lines (one that I am way too old to wear, and one that I am way too broke to wear), while Mary-Kate is the one who still occasionally graces us with her acting presence, and I hold her entirely responsible for the dirty hipster hobo-chic trend that has been around for far too long.
But when Ashley Olsen appeared at the Google Boutique launch party (because it’s not like Google has infiltrated enough of our everyday lives…) in an outfit that was not only fitted but actually adorable, I was shocked. Like, I had no words. Well, except for gimme, gimme, gimme. Read More »

Jessica Alba has been taking a break from the big screen lately, choosing to focus on raising her daughter and tweet about feeling fly like a G6. Yet, she is still a solid fixture in all the tabloids, because for some reason, everyone is still obsessed with the fact that celebrities procreate (and look fabulous while doing so).
Jessica is definitely one of the most stylish mommies running around Hollywood. She has a fresh, hip, not excessively trendy style and she loves to include unexpected accessories or pieces with eye-catching detailing. Weird, because I also like to be fresh, hip and not excessively trendy with a touch of the unexpected. Thankfully, I don’t have to have Jessica’s movie star salary to achieve my style dreams. [When moving into either a dorm or an off-campus apartment, your wardrobe will face two major challenges: 1. A major lack of funding (to add more to it), and 2. A major lack of storage space (for all the crap you've got). For these two reasons, maximizing what you already own becomes essential. That's why you need to learn to Shop Your Closet. Each week, I’ll show you how to wear 1 item 3 ways – with the stuff you most likely already own! – to get the most out of your purchases.]
I’m a huge fan of dresses. They’re feminine, comfortable and instantly make you dressed up, even if you just rolled out of bed. But despite my dress devotion, the colder it gets outside, the less inclined I am to actually wear one. Or at least, that’s how it used to be. Since I learned the art of layering, suddenly almost everything (chunky sweaters are the exception – there’s no way those can be worn in the middle of summer) in my wardrobe can be worn through all four seasons.
Especially the strapless dress.
It’s one of the easiest, most versatile dress styles to layer. Because you don’t have to worry about the awkward layering of different necklines, it’s easy to toss a shirt underneath. And like every other dress in your closet, throwing a cardigan or blazer over top is quick and chic. The other thing I like is that a lot of strapless dresses have more structure to them (in order to hold them up!) which means you can still show off your figure despite being completely covered up and cozy. One thing I’m sure you everyone owns is a black cardigan. It’s definitely an essential item for the college girl – it goes with anything, is easy to wear, is perfect for layering when going from a cold classroom to a steamy library, and doesn’t show the dirt that’s accumulated since your last laundry day….3 weeks ago.
As it gets closer to Thanksgiving you might be putting off laundry, in hopes that your parents will help you with the garbage bag full of dirty clothes you bring home. The longer you put off that trip to the laundry room, though, the harder it is to get dressed. Luckily, your black cardigan will help fill in the gaps between now and hooray-mom’s-doing-my-laundry day (or even now and next spring!), and I’ve got three outfits to help you get up, get dressed and get out of your room in style.
Thank you, god of black cardigans! Read More »
