I wasn’t picked. You weren’t picked (unless you happen to be Barack Obama, in which case, congratulations! And welcome to the site!). But that’s OK, because we weren’t even close. Sure, we may have been in the running for Most Awesome Person of the Year, or Funniest Person of the year, but Time was never on our radars.

But it was for these 4 people who were thisclose to getting the infamous Time cover. And then they didnt. What happened? Why weren’t they chosen?

We have a pretty good idea:

Henry Paulson: As Secretary of the Treasury, this guy has a lot on his plate. Mostly the collapse of the entire economy, the bailout that hasn’t done much, and other major American industries going down the tubes. It may not be his fault, but he is the face people see when they watch their investments dwindle to nothing.

Nicolas Sarkozy: We heard about the President of France a lot over the summer, beginning with the Georgia conflict. People seem to love him and his abilities as a leader, and see him doing some really great things in the future. That all seems pretty cover-of-Time-worthy, but could he really rival the first Black president? I don’t think so.

Sarah Palin: Surprise of the year? Yes. Winker of the year? Totally. Beehive of the year? You betcha! But person of the year? Puhlease. The fascination surrounding this woman is in how she made it so far, not in anything she has done or can do. She didn’t deserve to be VP of this country and she definitely does not deserve Person of the Year.

Zhang Yimou: He put together a pretty spectacular show for the Opening Ceremonies of this year’s Beijing Olympics. He also has a pretty spectacular life story. If we didn’t love and respect Barack Obama so much, we’d say Yimou had been robbed of the title.

I love Meet the Press. I know it’s nerdy, but I don’t care. Sunday mornings were all about pancakes and Meet The Press.

Sadly, this probably won’t be the case anymore. It’s being reported on the New York Post online that Tim Russert died this afternoon from an apparent heart attack. The 58-year-old anchor of Meet the Press was badass — if not always seemingly a little bugged out — and is responsible for making a lot of political pundits squirm in their seats and stutter like little girls.

According to The Post:

“Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of “Meet the Press,” has died after collapsing at NBC’s Washington news bureau, a source said…

Russert joined NBC News in 1984. In April 1985, he supervised the live broadcasts of the Today program from Rome, negotiating and arranging an appearance by Pope John Paul II – a first for American television. In 1986 and 1987 Russert led NBC News weeklong broadcasts from South America, Australia and China.

In 2008, Time Magazine named him one of the world’s 100 most influential people.”

Dude, you and your challenging political questions will be missed. Especially in my apartment. On Sundays.

What is it about politics that makes men think they can get away with being total scumbags?

I’m so incredibly sick of these scandals that make the gossip-ridden mags like US Weekly and OK! seem blasé.

The New York Times broke the original story yesterday. A wiretapping investigation identified New York Governor Eliot Spitzer as “Client 9” of the Emperor’s Club, a New Jersey prostitution ring. It seems he met with a variety of call girls at 7 or 8 times over the past few months.

According to the ABC news blog, Temeka Rachelle Lewis, remarked to the call girl involved with Spitzer (code name “Client-9”) the night before VALENTINE’S DAY (cough…scumbag…cough) that she had heard that,

“[Client-9] would ask you to do things that, like, you might not think were safe – you know – I mean that . . . very basic things.”

I’m not sure what “very basic things” she refers to but it sounds fairly kinky…Nice one, Gov.

The Republican Party says it will impeach him if he fails to resign as Governor . According to Reuters, James Tedisco, leader of the Republicans in the state Assembly stated, “If he does not resign within the next 24 to 48 hours, we will prepare articles of impeachment to remove him.”

During his hastily held press conference on Monday March 10th, Spitzer made no mention of resigning and seemed to make an attempt to separate his political stance with his personal life. As the New York Post reports, he stated,

“I don’t believe politics in the long run is about individuals. It is about ideas and the public good and doing what is best for the state of New York.”

Well, at this point, his resignation would definitely be the best thing for New York. The state has more important things to work on than the impeachment trial of a lecherous governor.

There really is no way this situation could look worse for the Governor.

Political Failure: As the Washington Post’s blog, The Trail notes, he’s a Clinton Superdelegate meaning that his indiscretions may very well impact the course of the 2008 Democratic National Convention. (imagine trying to live THAT down) Moreover, this has caused the country to flashback on Hilary’s position as the humiliated wife of a pervert husband—something I would imagine her campaign is not too thrilled about.

Hypocrite: He was elected on a “Law and Order” platform and since yesterday was best known for his anti-corruption and anti-crime stances. In 2002, he was named Time Magazine’s “Crusader of the Year”. Adding insult to injury—his triumphs included the breakup of several high-end prostitution rings! As the New York Post reports, following one of these busts, Spitzer jubilantly stated;

“This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multi-tiered management structure […] it was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring, and now its owners and operators will be held accountable.”

Hmmmm… How does it feel, Gov, to be involved in “nothing more than a prostitution ring”…?

In 2005, Sptizer, then NY Attorney General, lambasted radio station WQHT, fining them over their on-air Smackfest contest in which women slapped each other to win prizes. At the time, the BBC quoted Spitzer saying,

“This agreement should be a wake-up call to all those in the entertainment industry who think outrageousness is a clever marketing strategy […] the law establishes set boundaries that cannot be crossed to protect our community’s health and safety.”

Perhaps Time Magazine should consider giving Spitzer a “Hypocrite of the Year” award for 2008. (Let’s hope to god there’s no one to contest him)

[Editor's Note: at the time of this posting, Spitzer has not yet resigned...but don't worry. He will]

“My diet starts tomorrow…right after I devour this pizza, plate of chicken tenders, and a six pack of beer today“

How many times have you been in this situation in college or heard one of your friends say they are going to start eating healthy at a certain time in the future? Everyone always assumes that one more greasy, fatty meal won’t make a difference. But now, researchers are proving that you are only as healthy as your last meal.

One cheeseburger can do damage to your health, reports Time. “Just one high-fat, high-sugar meal can trigger a biochemical cascade, causing inflammation of blood vessels and immediate, detrimental changes to the nervous system,” explains a study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

But, wait, don’t worry, there’s also some good news published in this study!

Just one healthy meal will help return your body to its optimal state.

For an in-depth explanation of why this happens and the processes going on internally, check out the Time article.

In short, the lead author of the study, James O’Keefe, worded it best, “Your health and vigor, at a very basic level, are as good as your last meal“.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that anyone is perfect and always able to resist a meal filled with fat, grease, or sugar. But, the excuse of “it’s just one meal, it won’t matter…” is just not true.

Everything you put into your body will make a difference, even if only on a short term immediate level. The uplifting news is that you can turn it around right away when you start eating healthy!

So grab that healthy snack and start feeling awesome.

Did The Matrix spur the Columbine shooters? Was the Paducah, Kentucky high school shooter inspired by The Basketball Diaries? Did Virginia Tech’s shooter Cho Seung-Hui kill because of what he saw in OldBoy (a violent Korean film made in 2003)?

In a recent Time.com article, author Richard Corliss wonders if it’s more than a strange coincidence that one of the pictures Cho took of himself where he “looks fierce and holds a raised hammer” is very similar to a shot in Korean director Park Chan-Wook’s film.

Just because he raises the question doesn’t mean Corliss actually believes there is any connection. In fact, he challenges anyone who thinks these movies are somehow responsible for the aforementioned shooting sprees to “explain why [everyone else] who saw Oldboy, and The Matrix, and Saw, didn’t do the same.”

A similar article in the New York Times muses that a fellow writer who tried to connect Cho to the Korean action flick as well as John Woo films “was simply trying to make a guess as to the features of the killer’s mental world.”

As someone who is trying to make her living in the entertainment field, my opinions run strong on this issue. I agree with both reporters that blaming movies for acts carried out by disturbed individuals is ludicrous. I know plenty of people I would trust with my life who pay money to see horror films like Saw and Hostel and enjoy every bloody second. My brother and his friends played violent video games all through their childhood, and so far, not a single one has checked in their sanity card. I saw The Basketball Diaries when I was young, and all it did was make me decide I was never, ever, going to do drugs.

A movie can’t turn a sane person crazy. John Woo didn’t put the gun in Cho’s hands. The entertainment industry is a lot of things, but one thing it’s not is babysitter for the world’s youth. Every time a young person commits a horrible crime, we want answers. We want reasons. It’s too complicated to trace a person’s mental history or attempt to research his childhood. It’s too accusatory to blame the parents. But it’s real easy to find someone’s video rental log and draw a direct connection from screen violence to real violence.

Violent movies don’t instill a need for sadistic behavior in adept people. More likely, they are the preferred entertainment of a mind already warped by serious psychological and external forces.

Perhaps the Columbine shooters or the Kentucky teenager or Cho replicated images they saw in films during their killings, but it’s not the imitation we should be worried about—it’s the acts themselves, and the reasons behind them, that should be analyzed.
