Spring 2011 Fashion Week All-Stars

One of the hardest parts of going back to school is how quickly my work is interrupted by New York Fashion Week.  I know I should crack a textbook, get started on an assignment or two, but it’s nearly impossible to focus with pictures from an endless number of talented designer collections.  Add in Style.com’s iPhone app and I’m even having trouble staying focused in class.

Thanks a lot, Fashion Week.

And now that the week is done and I’ve spent every last second of it drooling over flowy dresses and a whole lot of bare bellies, it’s time to narrow down the best of the best from this year’s Spring Fashion Week. It was exceptionally difficult to choose favorites (it seemed like every single designer pulled out all the stops and created nearly perfect collections this year!), but using a very scientific formula (a scale ranging from “I’d totes wear that” to “I’d cut out my own kidneys and sell them on the Black Market to buy that”) I’ve determined this year’s Fashion Week Designer All-Stars.

Sorry, Marc Jacobs and Tory Burch – I really did love your collections – but as Iman (of Canada’s Next Top Model) would say: you just didn’t make the cut.

The Top Five Trends Coming in Spring 2011

Just as we’re sadly parting with our flip flops and trading them in for knee-high boots (theoretically…not me, though.  I keep wearing mine till Thanksgiving!) we get a sunny reminder of what we’ll have to look forward to this Spring: crunches until we die and gorgeous drapey dresses.

Yes, Fashion Week is officially over and it’s time to dive into that much needed brownie, models! to take a look at what we’ll all be wearing once the snow melts this June spring.  What do the designers have in store  for us? (In store? Get it? Store?! Ha!) We’ve watched every last show and seen every last look (thanks, Stylelist!) and here’s what’s coming for Spring 2011.

Oh, and don’t worry – it will not be this. Read More »

Rock the Look: Spring Florals

picture-10.png

With spring fast approaching (it’s mid-March already?), the floral trend is once again in full swing. Although most people are fairly familiar with this repetitive trend, there are a few things to keep in mind when you’re rocking petals on your outfit.

Here are the 3 biggest tips for keeping florals feminine and sophisticated:

1. Watch the colors you choose for florals. When you pick out a floral-printed piece, make sure you have an item that will go with it and match at least one of the colors.

2. Choose floral patterns that are proportionate to your size and shape. If you are small or big, wearing a huge flower pattern will make you look more so. Also, rock florals on a part of your body you want to bring attention to, not the ones you want people to ignore!

3. To avoid looking like you just escaped from the nursing home, pick floral items in soft, flowing materials such as silk. And make sure they skim your curves but don’t look too tight. Read More »

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: They Call Me (Not So) Mellow Yellow

leighton_meester.jpg[Every week our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you don’t have to.

All you have to do is click on the goods and - boom - you can buy the entire ensemble. Yes, we know; there is a spot for her in heaven.]

Yellow, if you remember correctly, I said was THE color to have this season (along with purples, grey, prints, bright colors and leather jackets). But in any case, these yellow dresses are a great piece to take you to class (with flat boots, a leather jacket and a large tote) or to the bar (pumps, clutch, great black belt).

Not to mention, it stands out a lot more than the black tops and dresses that every other girl on campus is wearing. And besides – there is just something so happy about yellow that you almost forget that it’s 30 degrees, you are walking in snow and you can’t feel your fingers. Just look down at your yellow dress and remember: the fabulous color of your dress is also the color of beer and that, my friends, will keep you warmer and happier than anything else.
