Paint it Black

chanel black satin nail polish 2When you live in New York City black is everywhere.

People sport in on a daily basis, you’ll see 10 raven-haired beauties before you see a blonde…and I’m pretty sure the city air leaves my lungs a healthy shade of ebony.

So, perhaps this is why it comes as no surprise that companies are picking up on a new trend where “black is the new black”.

Irony at it’s finest? No way! I say it’s revolutionary!

The Japanese (ever the trendsetters) have begun to release black products like there’s no tomorrow. Summer may be the time for white, but black is finally getting its due. For instance? Japanese airliner StarFlyer is outfitting its aircrafts with black leather seats. Some may call it morbid…I call it classy.

Want to talk revolution? How about black toilet paper? It’s a big hit in Europe (what isn’t?) but damn if it isn’t, at the very least, a lovely novelty. Even if you aren’t feeling the dark hue…try out a different color. Okay, so maybe you’re concerned about the TP. I understand. How do you feel about black cotton swabs? Black Nail Polish? Black toothbrushes? Black toothpaste? It never ends! Read More »

Cocktails For Your Fingers

girls drinking cocktailsCocktail rings: equal parts ridiculous, amazing, and WASP. I remember my Great Aunt Mimi’s honking rings nearly gouging my eyes out when she tried to pinch my cheeks at the Thanksgiving dinners of my youth.

I should have been more receptive to her affection — I could have inherited a few of her ruby stunners. I want them now because cocktail rings are decidedly back in style.

While these rings aren’t necessarily the most sensible of accoutrement, nothing says party like a huge, obtrusive rock on your finger.

Because of their glittery largesse, cocktail rings aren’t too hard to find — but New York Magazine already did some work for you here, and if you’re looking to spend a little less, head to that reliable old favorite Claire’s. Read More »

Trend Alert: Watch Necklaces

I’ve never been a big fan of the watch. For one, I really don’t like wearing anything on my wrist and two, Cher in Clueless had it right when she said “a watch really doesn’t go with this outfit, daddy…” because, let’s be honest, it really doesn’t go with anything.

Well, until now. Here are a few new watch options for summer that don’t require any wrist-action. I guess they’re good for spicing up a cute dress or something. Not for telling time.

Trend Alert: Animal Jewelry

I’m a total animal lover. Dogs, cats, monkeys, bunnies — they’re just so damn cute, I could squeeze ‘em.

Anyway, I recently noticed that jewlery designers are really embracing the animale love — seriously, it’s the call of the wild.

Monkeys, horses, birds, snakes, owls and cats are now wraping aroung wrists, hanging from necks and dominating finger-wear. Not gonna lie, I’m a fan and I’ve found some hot (not to mention adorable) pieces at decent prices.

Hollywood Fashion Epidemic: Transparent Clothing

seethrough.gifI don’t normally look to Hollywood when I’m trying to decide what to wear. My style is more of a hippie-chick-meets-New-York, while the fashion sense in Tinseltown is mostly…expensive and ugly.

Don’t get me wrong, every once in a while I’d love to wear a dress like this, but most of the time, I can’t understand why anyone would want to set eyes on half the stuff celebrities cover themselves with, let alone pay hundreds of dollars for it. And yet, ugly as some of the fads are, they become popular at lightening speed, everyone clamoring for Kirsten Dunst’s ugly stretch pants or Avril Lavigne’s tired (oh so very tired) faux-punk look.

Which is why it should come as no surprise that a new clothing trend is simultaneously taking control of Hollywood while pissing me off immensely.

The Sheet Top Epidemic has always been around, but what was once a small miscalculation between bra color and outside light is now turning into an obvious ploy for attention. Everyone from Christina Aguilera to cute Kate Hudson has been photographed making a calculated sheer mistake. (Oh, Britney Spears has also been photographed doing it, but I mean…it hardly seems strange on her.)

Transparent clothing is tacky and cheap. There’s no arguing about it. Wearing a translucent shirt is just asking people to stare, begging for onlookers to ogle your boobs. What’s so stylish about a white bra under a black shirt anyway? To me, that combination signifies a mistake—something I’d be horrified to discover on my body.

What do you think of this see-through style?

Trend Alert: Blue Is the New Black

So one of my favorite bloggers, the Imaginary Socialite, snapped a pic of a girl wearing the latest nail craze – blue nailpolish. Blue is totally the new black for nails and the best shades are dark and navy-ish for summer.

As the Imaginary Socialite says, “Her nails are navy blue and they seem like a good compromise between the goth moment of fall and the other colors – metallic, light orange, hot pink – that seem just a little bit wrong.”

Start painting those digits blue.

Eyelet is always a staple for spring; cute, feminine eyelet dresses filled the runways in New York, Milan and Paris.According to Style.com, “From Carolina Herrera’s more formal take to BCBG’s more casual look, this is one trend anyone you can take from runway to reality.”

I’ve found a few affordable options that will give you the trend with out the high price tag. Read More »
