Sometimes, the best things in life come unexpectedly. Like that time you ran into a store “just to browse” and you found a rockin pair of jeans for super cheap. Or when you got randomly paired up with your roommate and now you can’t imagine how you lived the last 20 years without her- you swear you must have been separated at birth.
This got us thinking – that perhaps, the best MEN in life also come unexpectedly… not only is timing everything, but apparently so is location. So we’ve put together the 5 most unlikely places to meet a man. Try them out or try out an unlikely place of you very own…

Let’s face it, when you’re a college chic on a budget it’s hard enough to afford the actual fashion and celeb magazines (what are they these days $4.95?), let alone the glorious, “I will be poor for the rest of my life if I actually buy that” fashions that are inside.
It’s like that boy you love that you know has a girlfriend and yet you flirt with him anyways…a major tease that you knowingly setting yourself up for disappointment only to be left without the boy (or in this case, Jimmy Choo’s).
So what’s a girl on a major budget to do (aside from salivating all over this month’s Vogue)?
Consider me your new best friend (or personal shopper). Your own Rachel Zoe, if you will. Each week, I’ll take a new celeb or couture look and do all the leg work for you. I’ll find a similar style on a real girl’s budget. Now all you have to do is order it, throw it on and go.
This Week: Jessica Simpson’s Red Wrap Dress
Red Wrap Dress from Victoria’s Secret. A wrap dress is such a great wardrobe staple. This one is a little bit of a longer sleeve than the one Jessica is wearing, which is a great piece to take you from summer to fall. Wear it now with a wedge and in October with tights and a great boot… and if red isn’t your color, it comes in Black and Blue too! Read More »

I. Love. Plaid.
I don’t know what it is about that winsome pattern, but I can’t get enough.
I suspect it has something to do with the years I spent looking at fashion magazines with my mother. Every September, from the time I was 11 until I was 17, my mom would come home with a copy of the Seventeen: Back To School issue. And we devoured that sh*t.
And for some reason, every September without fail, that magazine would be busting at the seams with plaid. Plaid dresses, plaid shirts, plaid fricking socks–is plaid in every fall? The answer, my friends, is yes.
I don’t read Seventeen’s Back to School issue anymore (although my mother still does), but plaid don’t fade and neither do my love.
So here, for your viewing pleasure, is the creme of the crop of this season’s fall plaids. Pair with otherwise simple pieces, a smile, and a nostalgia that time will never defeat. Ahhhh. Plaid. Read More »

I read an article in The New York Times the other day about New York shoppers spending three or four hundred bucks on a pair of sunglasses at stores like Ilori in SoHo. According to the article, market research firm The NPD Group has tracked purchases of luxury goods and, even in this constantly drooping economy, the amount spent on designer sunglasses has gone up while the amount spent on designer purses has gone down.
I’m not at all surprised.
Even more so than a purse or shoes, sunglasses are the first thing people notice about your outfit. You wear them all day and some people, like myself, wear them everyday. So why not drop as much on a pair of Gucci shades as you do on a pair of Manolo’s if you’ve got the spare change?
In recent years sunglasses have become the new It accessory. Pictures of Nicole Richie in oversize glasses that engulfed her tiny head became as ubiquitous in tabloids as pictures of Britney Spear’s cellulite, and the Olsen twins are now more famous for their Ray-Ban Wayfarers than their Balenciaga Motorcycle bags. Even wearing sunglasses at night has become popular with hundreds of pictures of drunk hipsters wearing the Kanye West designed shutter shades in dark clubs on websites like lastnightsparty.com. I consider myself to be relatively fashion forward. Not to the degree where I mimic everything I wear from the latest episode of Project Runway, but I would like to think I have a nice healthy happy-medium of trendy and classic.
I am not however, a very adventurous dresser. But today as I am getting ready for a little BBQ with some friends, I am in an appearance crisis—my hair looks heinous.
It’s the weather, and the fact that I am in dire need of a trim, and that I am out of my obsession/necessity to live, Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. But no matter the excuses, my hair looks horrid, and I am just not willing to show up with my hair in a messy bun again, nor do I own a baseball hat.
I cannot justify pulling a Britney Spears solution to this hot-mess of hair and shaving it off, (mostly because tomorrow I swear I’ll buy more Super Skinny Serum and the world will be right again) but I also cannot leave the house looking like this.
As I searched my apartment for anything to be used to hiding my hair, I looked fondly over to my really cute Lilly Pulitzer bandanas, which I bought because they were so damn cute, yet a year later still have yet to find a use for them. Read More »
Remember the old days when boys and a select group of ladies would buy over-sized jeans and then belt them up far below their waists? There was nothing like watching a boy waddle down the hall, trying with all his might to hold those damn pants up. Or the shot of his unattractive boxer shorts as he bent down to tie his loosely laced sneaker.
Ah. The good old days.
Just like the days of the Mix Tape and the VCR, baggy jeans and the sagging that came with them are over. Maybe people realized that sagging/exposing your undergarments was about as flattering as those girls with their thongs hanging out, or maybe people decided to reduce their Carbon Footprints by minimizing the amount of denim they wasted, but sometime in the last few years baggy jeans left the scene and super tight jeans made their debut.
Thank you, Pete Wentz.
Now everyone – from the super trendy to the super skater-y – is sporting the skinny jean. And I don’t need to explain to you that sagging skinny jeans is pretty much impossible. Not that I ever understood the purpose of sagging, anyway. But some people did…and thought it was necessary to bring it back, despite the obvious logistical complications. Read More »

I love me some Forever 21.
When I have a bad day, I’ll stop by their two-story store in Union Square and buy myself an adorable will-rip-in-three-weeks-but-who-cares- because-it’s-so-adorable shirt. When I have a good day, I’ll push through the crowds on Broadway and purchase a bright sweater that 17 other girls probably have, but because it’s so bright and cute, I don’t care. Yes, Forever 21 is my fountain of cheap and trendy.
But it may also be my Bible Study Group in disguise.
What am I talking about, you ask? Well, the other day, after throwing one of their trademarked yellow shopping bags onto my bed, I happened to catch a glimpse of the underside of said bag. What I saw there stopped my spiritual- yet-vehemently-non- organized-religious heart dead.
John 3:16.
There it was, in tiny, black letters. A Bible verse. A freaking Bible verse! Read More »

Someone has heard my prayers.
Maybe it was God, Maybe it was Marc Jacobs, I don’t really know and to be honest, I don’t really care but someone, somewhere has heard my begging and pleading and has done something about it.
A change that makes me so happy, I am twirling around like a 5 year old in my maternity style dress.
Magazines, newspapers, and TV shows alike have been abuzz with “What’s In and Whats Out” for your 2008 wardrobe. And thankfully (or perhaps FINALLY is a better word) I can throw my “Someone’s having a baby dress!” in the trash (and yes someone DID say that to me, to which I proceeded to jump off the nearest bridge)
While I have heard the phrase “return of femininity” the past three years (Fashionistas claimed the baby-doll dress was in fact feminine. I claim that it is a way to make me look like a fat-ass who is ready to pop one out). But this time, the trends for spring/summer are in fact, showing off that we are women.
Belted waists, bodice hugging dresses, flattering pants and a whole lot of bold colors and prints are what you will be seeing this year. Gone are the trapeze dresses. Leggings? So two years ago. Menswear for women, drab colors, skinny jeans tucked into booties, boxy pieces with no shape and oversized cardigans, that we all HAD to have, will be sent away like Lilo being sent to rehab. When it comes to being trendy, anything computer-controlled seems to get overlooked. Usually seen as too geeky to be truly chic, when it comes to fashion, science need not apply.Until I came across Skintiles.
To be quite honest, it took me a few times reading through the write-up on these things to really get what the hell they are, so let me give you a simplified run-down:
It’s like a mood ring that you can stick on your body, much like jewelry, except instead of whatever mystery substance is in those rings, Skintiles are completely electronic!

Gwen Stefani has always had a kick-ass sense of style. I think we can all agree on that.
But lately, ever since No Doubt as all-but-confirmed a full-blown reunion, Gwen has committed a mighty fashion crime that I hope does not catch on (which is exactly how I feel about the Cloggens).
The Boyfriend Jeans.
First defined by the girls at Go Fug Yourself, Boyfriend Jeans are five sizes larger than they should be, ratty, torn-up and unflattering. Maybe they’re supposed to be all “weathered” and trendy, but the difference between Distressed Jeans and Boyfriend Jeans is that these babies look like your man should be wearing them instead of you.
It seems that Gwen has not one, but two pairs of Boyfriend Jeans, or, in her case, Husband Jeans. And what goes better with your husband’s pants, then a shirt with his face on it? NOTHING! Read More »
