We Love Bands With Accents!

There’s something about those dreamy musicians with those cute little accents. Ever since the Beatles invaded the American scene, we’ve been craving the latest foreign musical phenomenon. Do you ever wonder why Justin Bieber’s so popular? ‘Cause he’s small and cuddly? No! It’s because he’s Canadian! Somehow, those foreigners know exactly what we want to hear and they always deliver. Could it be that their music is just better? Or is it those tantalizing accents?! I’ll take accents for $500, Alex! So ladies, we’ve collected our Top 10 favorite foreign accents — I mean bands,  and we’re serving up their accents up hot with their greatest and latest hits.

Strange Talk: This up-and-coming Australian band is just making its way to America now and we couldn’t be more excited. Not only is their music insanely catchy, but they also have an amazing contest going on right now. Seriously. Check it out now.

5 Questions We Ask Everyone: Glen Power of The Script

Have you ever heard a song on the radio that you were so obsessed with but didn’t know who sang it so you went home, hopped onto Google and tried to remember the lyrics so you could put them in? And then when that didn’t work you loaded your iTunes and played through the top songs of the week to see if one of them could possibly be it? And then when that didn’t work either you just kept the radio on all the time until you finally heard it again and got the band name?

Me too. And that song was Break Even by The Script. Which I downloaded. And replayed 22 times in the first two days.

I was obsessed with this new band discovery and told everyone I knew about them. At which point I discovered that they are not new at all. In fact, The Script has been wildly successful in Ireland and the U.K. for years; the U.S. was just a little slow on the uptake. But better late than never, right? Especially with a band as talented, adorable and humble as this one. I got the chance to talk to (well, email with – these guys are busy traveling the world right now!) Glen Power, the man behind the drums, about The Script’s rise to stardom. Then, obviously, I listened to Break Even a few more times as I wrote this up.

I just can’t get enough. Read More »

Down With Adam Lambert!

Adam-Lambert-1The biggest criticism people have about our generation is that we don’t fight for anything. Unlike those who stood firmly against Vietnam, racial inequality, or the lack of women’s rights, we sorta sit back and let other people fight the battles today. We are lazy. We are greedy. Yada, yada, yada.

But I disagree.

I am not lazy and I will fight battles I am passionate about. Namely: America’s love for Adam Lambert.

When Mr. Lambert first tried out for American Idol I thought he was good…. in an over-the-top “I was in every high school musical” sort of way. He had a good voice, but he was loud and obnoxious and would really only shine as the lead in some sort of off-Broadway musical dedicated to the songs of Queen. He also had a horrible haircut and a serious addiction to guy-liner.

I wasn’t surprised when they let him through, but I never thought the day would come when Simon Cowell joined the millions of screaming teenage girls falling head-over-heels in love with Adam Lambert.

And watching Cowell plead with America to vote Lambert into the final two has made me angry. So angry, in fact, that I threw a perfectly good homemade chocolate chip cookie at the TV last night. Which my roommate promptly picked up and ate. I will not sit back and watch that karaoke freak take the coveted title away from two far superior singers. I refuse to let that man ruin a perfectly classic U2 song and then be crowned America’s idol. I will not let millions of impressionable young boys get a reverse mullet and start slathering on the man makeup.

Someone has to stop this insanity and if it has to be me, then so be it. I’m officially starting an Anti Adam Lambert revolution. I may not be able to take to the streets (mostly because I’m afraid of the wrath of the tweens), but I will use the power of my iPhone (and my votes)  to end this Lambert madness. Who’s with me!?

It is never easy to go against the world and stand up for what you believe in, but this is an issue that just cannot be ignored. Down with Adam Lambert!

Throw a (Sham)Rockin’ St Patty’s Day Party

st-pattys-day.jpgNew Year’s is long gone.  The singles just finished drowning their emotions in V-day bar specials.  What do we celebrate next? Ahh… St. Patrick’s Day.  The most nationalistic holiday that still manages to include people of every gender, race, culture, and alcohol tolerance.

St. Pat’s is the holiday that has never been sugar-coated with false meaning or wholly commercialized by Hallmark (sure greeting cards exist, but who really gives them?).  So make sure you embrace your inner Irish and do it up right on March 17.

1.  The Booze.

To throw a full-on Irish bash, you have to have an appropriate alcohol selection.  Well, what do you know? GoIreland.com happens to have a handy list of the most popular libations of the Emerald Isle, in case you’ve never heard of Jameson or Guinness.

Make sure you bar is stocked with whiskey, irish cream, and the beer they call “a meal in a can,” but don’t neglect some other favorites.  Other popular beers include Murphy’s Stout, Kilkenny, and Smithwick’s.  Cider is also a favorite.  If you’re a perfectionist, you might try to get your hands on some Meade or Poitín.

But perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself.  We are college students after all – mix up some Green Appletinis and make a few trays of lime Jell-O shots, and you won’t hear any complaints.  Really want some green magic to happen? Try to get your hands on the ultimate green liquor, absinthe, and let the green fairy fly. Read More »

Let it Rock: U2 is Back! But Wait, There’s More!

listen.jpg

If you pay attention to music news at all, then I’m pretty sure you’ve got one thing on your mind: U2. Of course, U2’s new album is what everyone and their brother is talking about this week and for good reason.

But don’t let the boys from back in the day completely overshadow the rest of the fabulous music being released this week. If you miss out on Neko Case’s new album, you’re likely going to regret it. And give newcomer Molly Jenson a listen to as well. While new releases from the classic groups are always super exciting, there’s a lot of fabulous new music out there. Read More »

Super Bowl 101: Tidbits You’ll Need to Know for the Big Game

super-bowl-logo.jpgThe Super Bowl is only a week away. Yes, one week.

One week until buffalo wing/pizza/guacamole heaven. One week until the biggest sporting event of the year. One week until the big halftime show. Are you ready for some football?

If you’re like many of the ladies out there, you don’t know many of the facts about the upcoming “big game” and you may not even care, but what better way to impress those sports lovin’ hotties at the Super Bowl party? And isn’t everything more fun when you know what’s going on and have someone to root for?

So without further ado, here is a basic Super Bowl XLIII 101.

The Teams

The game pits the top team in the NFC (National Football Conference), the Arizona Cardinals, against the top team in the AFC (American Football Conference), the Pittsburgh Steelers

The Arizona Cardinals:

-This is the first time in team history that the Cardinals are going to the Super Bowl. With 61 years under their belt, they have held the second longest championship drought in American sports.

-The Cardinals made it into the wild card round of the playoffs with a 9-7 record and shocked footballs fans everywhere when they won all 3 of their playoff games, despite being underdogs in each game. They are only the second 9-7 team in history to make it to the Super Bowl. Read More »

The End of an Error and Making MLK proud

GW kids on election nightDespite my pounding headache right now, I just had a moment of clarity that I want to share with you all.

The Inauguration of our 44th president is on tomorrow, and frankly I can’t remember anyone ever really caring about this ceremonial aspect of an election. Until this year.

And, wow, do they care.

D.C is “poppin’ off,” as the kids say. People have been partying all week, and will continue all week. What seems like the entire world is flocking to DC and my campus is on security lock-down, since GW is only 4 blocks from the White House. A huge, free concert with everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Beyonce to Bono was held on the National Mall on yesterday to celebrate. There are legit balls, as in Cinderella balls, to honor this man. Even the Metro tickets have Obama on them. Signs, posters, and more port-o-potties than you can fathom are popping up all over the city. This is big.

It is all strangely reminiscent of the scene in the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy accidentally crushes the Wicked Witch with her house, and all the little munchkins are crazy happy. Ding, Dong, the witch is dead Bush is gone! Read More »

I’m Headed to the Inauguration!

Knowing just what to expect out of possibly the most important weekend of my life thus far (at least politically speaking), is like knowing what you’re getting for Christmas as a kid, how many times lightning will strike over Nebraska next year, or how much money you’ll lose or gain by January 2010 because of the deepening recession or reversal thereof.

It’s totally unpredictable.

Here’s what I do know:

For the first time in my life, my generation is thoroughly excited by not just a presidential candidate, but the president elect. We could all be dead wrong, but from the way things are looking, Barack Obama’s election into office will turn over new leaves for our country that haven’t been turned over in…at least eight years.

I grew up hearing stories about political union in a generation and, sure, we aren’t all in agreement about the change that Obama may or may not make. But so many of us are excited that, for once, I feel like a part of something that I am proud to be a part of.

So I’m on a bus heading to Washington DC from New York. Already, the 60-some people on board are buzzing – all revved up and ready to explode for their weekend in DC. While the inauguration itself is the event we’re all going down to experience and witness, the weekend of celebration before should be one for the books. Even the bars are allowed to stay open until 4am this weekend. (I know that means nothing to you, New Yorkers, so I say to you: imagine an event so big that New York bars were allowed to stay open until 6am.) Read More »

V-Day MixTape: Side B “Yay! Love!”

23114555.jpgIt’s almost Valentine’s Day and you’re in love. Or maybe you’re just in “lurve” (love without the O…a precursor to the big 4 letter proclamation. I fall in lurve like twice a day).

Maybe, you’ve just got a giant heart and enjoy Valentine’s Day even though you’re single.

Maybe you’re one of those permanent happy people who confuse me.

In any case, this holiday does not fill you with dread. It does not fill you with sadness or the constant need to subdue your emotions with sugar.

It’s a nice day. A pretty day. A teddy bear holding a chocolate heart kind of day (…too much?).

It’s the day for this type of mix. Read More »
