I Bet You Only Drew Circles On Your Etch-A-Sketch

starry night etch a sketch

• Oh Mary Kate Olsen, if there’s one thing I didn’t want today, it was a visual in my head of you running around naked wearing only jewelry. Real visual? Maybe. (People Magazine)

• Am I crazy or have I been seeing satin shorts in Forever 21 for at least a year? Take that Vera Wang. (FashionchickNYC)

• So now all the smug vegans can drive around in their hybrids feeling smug for yet another reason! Good for them! (Yahoo News)

• “People would walk past the serious work I was doing as a painter and want to see the Etch-A-Sketches.” Ummm…Etch-A-Sketch is serious work. (UK DailyMail)

• If you’re unhappy you get more ice cream! But then what if you’re happy and don’t get as much…doesn’t this make you unhappy? Yes it does. Genius! (wemakemoneynotart.com)

Teen Vogue Schools Fashionistas

I fully agree with some of the gripes that Leah has with Teen Vogue (seriously, the duration of their internships is growing painful). However, while browsing the site recently, I came upon a program Teen Vogue sponsers that seems like it may be worthwhile.

Teen Vogue Fashion University takes place throughout the weekend of October 26-28 in a variety of venues in NYC. The event is designed for girls ages 18-22 who are looking to become involved in some aspect of the fashion industry.

The list of guest speakers is impressive, ranging from designers Vera Wang and Phillip Lim to Tim Gunn (from Project Runway) to fashion and beauty photographer Kevin O’Brien. For $150, “students” will get to choose which seminars they would like to attend, recieve a tour of the Teen Vogue offices, attend a concert by up-and-coming band Locksley and network with some major names in the fashion world. Fall Fashion: Babushkas

I have been to Russia and can affirmatively say that it isn’t just a stereotype—the ladies really do wear headscarves. In Russia, “babushka” is the term for grandmother. And in Russia, babushkas are generally seen with scarves tied around their heads.

In Paris and Milan, however, designers took the term further; literally interpreting babushka as the term for headscarf. And wrap scarves they did as babushkas (the head scarves) were walking rampant down the European runways during the fall 2007 shows.

The trend was first spotted at Vera Wang where the designer appropriately sent Russian model Vlada Roslyakova down the catwalk donning a black head scarf. Although Vera was the first, many designers chose babushkas as their head covering of choice for the fall season. From fur babushkas at Dolce & Gabbana to a more minimalist approach by Giles Deacon for Daks, the babushka had it covered. Read More »

Kohls + Vera Wang = Love

veraline.gifVera Wang is joining the ranks of celeb designers who create clothing for the common folk. Somehow, I am a bit surprised by this announcement. Sure, we are all used to Isaac for Target or SJP for Steve and Barry’s, but Vera Wang for Kohls? That’s like Prada creating a ready wear line for WalMart.

The New York Times reports Wang’s line will be available in September for cut-rate prices. This will serve as a rebirth of sorts for Kohls.

“Kohl’s intends to make Ms. Wang the public face of its reinvention. For her part, Ms. Wang says that her relationship with Kohl’s is more than a marriage of convenience. Like many successful entrepreneurs before her, she has reached a crossroads: her business has grown so rapidly and in so many directions that she lacks the resources — especially cash — to keep expanding it on her own.”

So, basically, nowadays, you almost have to create an inexpensive line that sells to the masses in order to survive as a designer. I guess that works to our benefit in the long run.

Will it be a success or not? Only two months till we find out.
