Confession time.

A big part of the reason I’m such a TV addict is I because I love the romcom romances that these TV shows feed their viewers. I love the will they won’t they of it. The build up. The cute scenes. The perfect moments. And yes the perfect kisses, which prove that if you try hard enough good chemistry can in fact, be faked. But anyway, like I was saying. I love the romances of the these TV shows and all cute and sexy scenes that come along with those romances. Like the makeout moments, which, there are quite a few of.

So this week, with TV lacking this summer season, I’d though I’d reflect on some of my favorite tv romances and the memorable makeout moments that accompanied them…and give you, and me, a chance to oh, ah, and aw over them by linking you to the scenes on YouTube.

10. Alex and Izzie in the bar. This one made the list more for the speech Alex makes that proceeds the kiss than the kiss itself, but also a little bit for the kiss. In Izzie’s words “Seriously.”

9. Cappie and Casey on the stairs. A loyal fan of Greek I waited patiently for these two crazy kids to finally get together. And their get back together scene, and kiss, really did live up to the hype. Mostly though, I love this scene because of their awkward pre-kiss ramblings and insecurities. Adorable.

8. Matt and Julie on the football field. Matt and Julie of Friday Night Lights (a recently canceled, completely underrated show I highly recommend to all of you) are the epitome of sweet and innocent first love. And so is this kiss.

7. Nathan and Haley in the rain. One Tree Hill took a turn off the deep end back around the second scary stalker story line, but when the show first started out even I was a Nathan and Haley fan. I mean they had the steamiest makeout sessions. Especially in the rain.

6. Seth and Summer upside down. I know they stole it from Spiderman but they gave Peter Parker and M.J. their due credit, which really only made the moment cuter. I’m a sucker for Seth, okay? So sue me.

5. Veronica and Logan on the balcony. Maybe this one wouldn’t make it into everyone’s top five but it makes it into mine. Mostly because of the way Veronica kisses Logan first, then shakes her head and walks away as if to say “what the hell was I thinking?” before Logan reels her back in. Totally classic.

4. Meredith and Derek in the elevator.  Mer and Der may have had their ups and downs throughout the seasons, but back in the day no one did steamy elevator scenes quite like these two. And for that we owe them their due respect.

3. Chuck and Blair in the limo. Yes Gossip Girl has gone down hill lately but who could forget that first kiss that started it all between Chuck and Blair? I mean in the back of a limo, with those vintage effects Gossip Girl used to do back when it was still cool, and Sum 41′s “With Me”  playing in the background, it was kind of perfect.

2. Pacey and Joey on the side of the road. Dawson’s Creek is a WB teen drama classic so obviously it was making the list. But there were a lot of steamy makeout sessions to choose from. I went with Pacey and Joey’s first kiss. Because they’re way better suited for one another than Dawson and Joey. And because I’m a sucker for the shut up kiss. Don’t ya ever get tired of talking? 

1. Ross and Rachel in the cafe. A tough choice  but who could really compete with the two season in the making, anger induced, passion filled kiss that officially started the will-they-won’t-they Ross and Rachel saga? No one. That’s why they’re number one, ladies. That’s why they’re number one.

I think it’s pretty clear by now that here at CollegeCandy we take our tv watching pretty seriously. We either love it, or hate it. (Or love to hate it.) We know what we like and what we don’t and we’re not afraid to say it. And when we’re invested in a show, we’re invested in a show. Like “oh-m-gee can you believe they finally kissed!?” invested.  So that’s probably why when our favorite tv shows take a turn for the worst it hits us so hard.

You know what I mean, right? When a show that you love to watch, wait for every week, suddenly somehow takes a turn towards crazy town with boring scenes, bad plot lines and characters with personality disorders? Sigh. It’s a sad fate, but it’s happened to the best of them.

10. The Jersey Shore. It’s only number ten because this show is far more entertaining than it has any right to be. It’s a train wreck, but it’s one that you just can’t look away from. But the things that make this show so enticing- namely the nights out at the clubs and the drunken brawls- have apparently been banned from season four to ensure that Italy appear in a positive light. So yeah, something tells me this show is on its way out.

9. American Idol. Season 10 was better than season 9. I’ll give them that. But really this show should have closed its doors the day Taylor Hicks was voted this country’s American Idol. Plus, Steven Tyler is fun and all, but without Simon there’s not a single judge that gives anything even close to an honest critique.

8. Gilmore Girls. I loved this show more than I’ve ever loved any other television show, but even I have to admit that its later seasons just didn’t measure up. Rory was transformed from a sweet but lovable bookworm to a college dropout and Lorelei married Christoper instead of Luke. We were supposed to buy that?

This week, as I caught up on my favorite fall shows (and watched some Sex and the City reruns) I couldn’t help but notice a running trend: female friendships. Sure some shows were about shopping (or singing while shopping) and some were about saving lives, but at the heart of it all, were some pretty cool chicks.

The kind of best friends every girl wishes she had.
The kind of best friends that will risk their lives to help you, the kind that will stand by you through anything, the kind of best friends that will…let you raid their closet. (Hey! It’s the little things that matter.)

Warner Brothers announced this week that they’re launching theWB.com. The website will be the premiere destination for free, streaming, WB content. This includes everything from old favorites like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls, and Smallville to shows Warner Brother’s had their hand in like Friends and The OC. The website will also feature older programs (The Jetsons, Gilligan’s Island) and brand new WB content created especially for the online venture.

Why is this such big news? It gives some of these shows a brand new forum and a chance to garner new fans. I am a TV fanatic but I never caught wind of Veronica Mars or Everwood. Now, I, and millions of others will have the opportunity to do just that, and for free.

Initiatives like iTunes, Hulu (a website featuring free Universal and Fox television shows and films), and TheWb.com, not only gives these programs a second chance, but they’re changing the way we conceptualize and watch television.

TV is not something you ogle after dinner time anymore. You can watch it on your phone while you ride the bus to work, you can watch it on your laptop when you get to work or you can record your favorite shows and watch them whenever and however you want. It’s a fascinating shift to watch and websites like this are at the vanguard of this movement.

So be on the lookout for theWB.com, not only to catch up on those old episodes of One Tree Hill, but to catch technological history in the making. And if nothing else, these old promos should get you excited.

Here’s hoping they bring back Jack and Jill.

Strong women are hard to find – at least, they are in movies and TV. The roles offered to women in mainstream entertainment tend to fall into an alarmingly narrow range: victim, wet dream, and killer bitch, with a long-suffering wife or girlfriend thrown occasionally into the mix. These parts are not only far from aspirational, they have little or nothing to do with the realities of the women who watch them.

Now, here’s the good news. Though they’re not easy to come by, great female characters do exist: tough, smart, funny, complicated women, who give normal girls something to shoot for, or at least allow us to indulge in some quality couch time without sacrificing our souls to the dark altar of the Chick Flick.

4. Veronica Mars, Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars – the sharp, sarcastic teen detective at the center of the WB’s much-beloved (and cancelled) series by the same name – triumphed over her show’s painfully cute premise to become one of the best female characters in recent years, due in large part to a fantastic performance by Kristin Bell. The writing didn’t hurt, either; Veronica worked several startlingly dark cases, including her own date rape, but she was never portrayed as a victim, and the show’s witty, self-aware dialogue kept it from dissolving into melodrama. I was just rewatching an episode of Veronica Mars (which, if you don’t know, is my favorite show) that featured the fine acting stylings of one Jonathan Taylor Thomas, or JTT to those in the know. Needless to say, he hasn’t aged well. He’s not quite a Fred Savage but he is by no means a Jerry O’ Connell.In his episode of VM, he is sporting this strange post-apocalyptic lost in the cement jungle half-mullet that really sort of traumatized me.

This sad encounter made me want to remember a happier time in the mid-nineties when JTT was all dimples and dreams and, of course, my heart’s most fervent desire. Read More »

5. Monica Bellucci

If you have seen this woman, then I really don’t need to explain myself. In her mid-forties, she could kick almost any ingenue’s boney little ass with the sheer force of her heavy-lidded sexuality. She could probably snap Keira Knightley in half with a glance.

I’m slowly coming to terms with the fact that my liking a show is essentially its kiss of death (so I hope no one is getting too deeply in to Gossip Girl, ‘cause I love those rich bitches). As soon as I really get into a show, it either gets canceled or goes the way of the Hindenburg, quality wise.

In middle school (okay, high school) I started watching Dawson’s Creek around the beginning of the fourth season when Pacey and Joey got together. They had such chemistry and Joshua Jackson was such a sexy little cupcake of a man.

Then, as if the WB knew that I was enjoying the storyline, Pacey and Joey broke up and Joey went off to boring college, got a boring roommate and dated a boring, creepy professor. And, worst of all, Pacey got a goatee.

Anyway, don’t get me started on Carnivale, My So-Called Life, Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks, Buffy and Daria. All amazing shows that caught wind that I was ardently watching and loving and got almost immediately canceled or started sucking (the sucking part is, of course, highly subjective, but did anyone really enjoy whiny little sister Dawn? or Tom, the ruiner of one of the best friendships in TV history?)

The one that hurts the most, however, is Veronica Mars. I watched the first two, transcendently awesome seasons on DVD right before the third season premiered on the new CW network. I had never seen a female character quite like Veronica: so smart, so witty, so kick-ass, sassy, no nonsense, flawed, complex–she was pretty much my hero on celluloid.
