Can We Talk About The Bachelor!?

I planned my entire Monday around the season finale of The Bachelor. I checked and re-checked my DVR three times before leaving the house for my 6pm hair appointment. I picked up dinner, cupcakes and a bottle of wine on my way home. Knowing that I would be starting the show late (I had to wait for my friend to finish class), I kept my computer and cellphone off out of fear that someone might spoil the ending for me before I got to watch it for myself.

And then, after all the waiting, my friend and I busted open that bottle of wine and settled in to watch the final episode of The Bachelor (on the wings of loooooove).

There were a lot of tears (from them and from us), a lot of screams (“ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!?), a lot of questions (“Why are Vienna’s teeth so big?”), a lot of wine, and a lot of lessons learned. Below, the 11 things I learned from last night’s big finale:

1. Turning the show into a drinking game where we took a sip every time someone cried was a terrible idea. Especially when that was the first time I’ve drank in a month.

2. My DVR isn’t smart enough after recording 24 full hours to this show over the course of the season to know that I might also want to record “After The Final Rose.” Read More »

Sunday Classics: Before Sunset

beforesunsetI can sit down and watch just about any movie and as such, I’ve seen a great many films in my life. More than I could even begin to count. I’ve seen masterpieces and pieces of sh*t, and out of every single movie I’ve ever seen in my life, Before Sunset is my absolute favorite.

It’s not a perfect film; indeed, many people would be bored by what is essentially an hour-and-a-half long conversation. Some would even say that basing a film on just two people talking is pretentious and anti-climactic. I believe, however, that Before Sunset is a deeply moving, real, and thought-provoking film about relationships and connections and even just being human.

It’s the sequel to 1995’s Before Sunrise in which the two main characters, Jesse and Celine, meet on a train and then spend one night together in Vienna. Talking. All night. Before Sunrise is a masterpiece in its own right, and, in that both films are directed by indie auteur Richard Linklater, they are both firmly films of and by their generation. Read More »

The Vegetable Orchestra: Amazing Music and Free Food!

Mix carrots, kale, celery, pumpkins, cucumbers and leeks and you get one fantastic soup. You also get a world renowned orchestra from Vienna who have made it their creative mission to use vegetables –and only vegetables– to create music.

The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra is made up of 11 musicians, a sound engineer and video artist, who together create a creative experience that most of us have never even conceived.

What’s exciting about this orchestra is that no genre is left untouched. They have been known to cut tracks ranging from experimental electronic to free jazz and anything in between. Along with their live performances a video portion is exhibited at the end for the audience…just another medium for these artists to get their message to you.

And what do they do with all of those vegetables after the show? They offer each member of the crowd some soup.

Of course!
