The Truth About Diet Coke

diet cokeAs if this news wasn’t bad enough (because I truly thought that “hard work and sensible meals” would work for me!), my day has just gotten worse.

Not sort of bad like, when you dry your undies on high heat and your life turns into a constant wedgie. Bad in a Diet-Coke-is-Bad-For-You way.

I understand that this news may be shocking to no one else but me, but I am just devastated. Sure, I knew all along that the artificial sweeteners that make up my favorite bev-y were bad for me.

Something about causing cancer or something, right? Well, excuse me for ignoring the warning signs and resigning to the fact that everything I do (like standing in front of my micro and watching my 94% fat-free popcorn pop) causes cancer. At least I wasn’t drinking regular Coke!

That stuff rots your teeth. And makes you fat. Duh. Read More »

Star Jones Admits to Weight Loss Surgery

star jonesIn an interview with Glamour Magazine (snippets here), Ms. Star Jones (formerly of The View) finally admits to getting Gastric Bypass Surgery to aid in her 160 pound weight loss back in 2003.

And in other blatantly obvious news, Lindsay Lohan has a drug problem and I have to beat men off with a stick.

Since when do we care about Star Jones?

She hasn’t been on The View in years, and even when she was she was most definitely hated. Okay, maybe not hated…but surely the butt of many a joke. And it was well-deserved!

The woman sold out her own wedding for goodness sakes! Tacky, Star…just tacky.

When is she going to admit her career is over? Or that she looks better with a few extra pounds? Or that she’s a selfish money-hungry pseudo-celebrity?

Or…and this will be a shocker…her husband is gay?

Just sayin’.

Summer Shape Up: New and Improved “Diet” Food

summer dietLong gone are the days of gross, cardboard-like tasting “diet food.” I can remember when the only supposedly healthy alternatives to regular food were things like Slim Fast shakes or meal bars. Ugh.

Beyond the fact that they are loaded with sugars and gross chemicals, most of them taste like absolute crap.

Well, fortunately, many food companies are catching onto the fact that America wants low calorie, natural foods that are actually good for you and make dieting easier.

Allure magazine recently published an article titled “Diet Saviors” and gave the low down on the new crop of low calorie foods, and I read it start to finish. Now, remember to avoid silly fad diets altogether, but substituting some of these wonderful foods into your diet may not be such a bad or painful task. Who knows, you might actually like them…

1. Tofu Shirataki Noodles- Okay, the name sounds weird and gross, but give them a chance. The noodles come with only 20 calories per serving! What other pasta dish will you find that enables you to eat with absolutely no guilt. Just think, if you gorged yourself and ate a whole three servings, you would have only taken in 60 calories. Avoid Bullsh#t Diets in Summer Shape-up Quest

Jessica Biel

What is your progress on getting that Jessica Biel body over summer vacation? Gotten a little sidetracked by the margaritas and half price happy hours? No worries, you still have over a month to get your ass in gear.

One thing that can sidetrack you from obtaining that great body for good is a fad diet or one that makes ridiculous claims and leaves you eating more than you could have ever imagined. Most college gals are guilty of buying into a quick solution to weight loss at some point in time, at least I know that I am. I actually considered the Master Cleanse Diet a few months ago. Honestly, what was I thinking?

Anyways, in hopes of saving you time and energy, I present Diet-blog.com‘s 7 signs of a Dubious Diet:

1. Promises quick weight loss

“Almost all of them do – this is unrealistic at best and dangerous at worse.”

2. Advocates centering the diet on one particular food

“Eg. grapefruit, peanut butter, coconut diets. Whether or not you eat these foods has no bearing on your weight and health.”

Weight Rooms: breaking through the testosterone

girl workoutFor the longest time, I stayed away from the weight room at my gym.

Not because I’m a weakling who can hardly lift 50 pounds (I mean…I really don’t have any muscles…but that’s not the reason), but because the weight room is traditionally a breeding ground for testosterone. A box full of dudes grunting and veins popping and machines clanking. A place where a tiny redhead listening to Kelly Clarkson on her iPod kinda sticks out.

Even though I wanted to do more than cardio, I was resigned to the fact that I would never visit such a room. That was until a friend of mine changed me forever.

Sara is a lesbian. Therefore she’s not really intimidated by dudes. Thus, the weight room isn’t a scary place for her. Consequently, she told me we were going to start going there. Read More »

Get a Jessica Biel Body over Summer Vacation

jbiel.jpgOkay, you have three whole months before returning back to campus in the fall. That is a solid amount of time to get your ass in shape. During my freshman year of college, I definitely took advantage of all the wonderful food that my dining hall had to offer and partook in late night pizza binges.

And it showed…I put on at least ten pounds. But, have no fear if you are in a similar situation, that extra weight is easy to peel off and there’s no better time to do it than summer.

The satisfaction you will feel upon returning to campus and leaving that guy, who you hooked up with regularly but haven’t seen since May, totally speechless and begging to get you back because of your bangin’ body will be amazing. Trust me, it’s worth the pain and effort.

So, what better hot broad to emulate than Jessica Biel? I mean, she was named Esquire’s “Sexiest Woman Alive.” Lucky for us, personal trainers of fit celebrities such as Biel revealed their best diet and fitness advice to US magazine for getting in shape. And I must say that the list, surprisingly enough, is some of the best and sane advice I’ve read in awhile.

1. Change is good!

Jessica Biel’s trainer, Jason Walsh, likes to keep his client mentally stimulated. “I’m a big advocate of recreational sports and stuff. If someone can get out there, even if it’s a hike or something like that, just to break up the monotony of going to the gym…I really like that.” Read More »

Cleanse Yourself

cleanse-yourself.jpgAfter a month of good-bye dinners with friends, hungover brunches at the local diners following those last precious nights of college craziness, and constant drinking leading up to graduation, my body hated me to say the least. I was determined that the month spent at home would be for detox and include strict dieting and exercise to get my health somewhat back on track before venturing out into the real world.

I’m proud to say that I have kept my diet and exercise up for the past week and a half and am already feeling ten times better. While looking into all sorts of diets, I came across one that was particularly interesting, the Master Cleanse Diet.

Remember when Beyonce looked bangin’ for Dreamgirls? Well she lost twenty pounds in a matter of weeks doing this “cleanse,” so it garnered a lot of media attention and was even written about in The New York Times. To be honest, for 2 seconds I considered trying it for fabulous results, then realized what actually went into it. Read More »

Courtney Loves to Starve Herself

c1.jpg

Eeesh.

What has happened to you, Courtney?

We all know she isn’t the brightest crayon in the box, or the most put-together chick who ever married a famous grunge musician, but….gee wiz! Something is very, very wrong with this lady.

According to my personal internet gossip diva, Perezhilton.com, Courtney Love has fired back against all those reports that she did something ‘medical’ to transform her body in only 4 months into it’s newly emaciated form. If you go to her fansite, you can read a wonderful incoherent rant where almost nothing is spelled right or even has the correct number of vowels. Apparently, Ms. Love is so pissed at people saying her weight loss isn’t ‘natural’ that she forgot to put on her first grade English hat. Read More »

Saggy Boobs? Check out Lagerfeld’s Diet Book!

saggy-boobs.jpgI have noticed a recent trend with celebrities, or anyone in the public eye for that matter, feeling any type of dramatic weight loss entitles them to write a book and coin their own “diet.” Now, don’t get me wrong, losing weight is a great accomplishment, especially if it’s a dramatic amount. Congrats to you, celebs.

But, that does not mean you have the knowledge and credentials to influence other minds. The most recent offender is fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld. His book, The Karl Lagerfield Diet, was created after his 92 pound weight loss. He lost the weight not because he felt he was obese or suffered from health problems, but simply because he wanted to fit into clothes made for younger, slimmer men. That’s a hell of a lot of weight simply for vanity reasons, but hey, whatever works for you. I’m not sure I would take weight loss advice from someone who was quoted in the New Yorker as saying, “I eat next to nothing.”

That’s just the first thing wrong with this book overall. Maybe Lagerfeld is capable of helping out other men with weight issues in his book, but his advice for women and how to improve the look of your breasts is creepy and downright weird.

One Big Fat Reason Not to Diet

yo-yo-diet.jpgI’ll admit it, I’m a compulsive yo-yo dieter. With the ups and downs of college, I don’t think I know a single girl who has remained the same weight all through college. Whether it means gaining the freshman 15 or crash dieting to drop ten pounds for a formal a month away, if you’re anything like me, your weight has been on a roller coaster ride over the past four years.

Although I always knew I was this kind of dieter, my fears were confirmed in a nutrition class last semester when we had to take a test called “what kind of dieter” are you. The title of yo-yo dieter basically means that I try out different diets from time to time, losing weight and then gaining some back. I am sort of a health nut as well and compulsively keep up with new diet, nutrition, and fitness trends.

But, recent research has shown that dieting actually makes you FATTER in the long run.
