We at CollegeCandy have really enjoyed watching the Winter Olympics (read: ogling the hot athletes). But as much fun as it was rooting on our people for the past two weeks, I’m a little more than psyched that some of my favorite shows are coming back!

On Monday, March 8th, our favorite socialites will return (FINALLY) with more drama than the UES can handle (and more opportunities for me to drool over Chase Crawford/ogle Serena’s designer duds)! We’ve got Jenny’s drug dealing ways to deal with, the Dan and Vanessa dramz and, of course, Chuck’s big secret!

With the Winter Olympics in full swing, all of the world’s attention is focused on Canada. And in addition to figure skating and snowboarding and skeleton (?!) a new Olympic sport has arisen—one that we plebeians can play from our couches!

I like to call it “Canadian CelebSpotting.”

As the winter months keep on keepin’ on, there is a little event that turns snow, ice, and cold into something beneficial: The Winter Olympics.

OK, I know what you’re thinking: the Winter Olympics could never hold a candle to the excitement of Beijing in 2008, or any summer games for that matter. Even if figure skating is pretty fun to watch, we also have to sit through Curling, Bobsledding and the Biathlon. Snore.

But what choice do we have? We’re already down Gossip Girl and Glee, and with the Olympics running for 2 weeks on NBC, there won’t be anything else to watch except guys in spandex speeding down a frozen water slide.

It’s February, and while the jubilation of the holidays is now a distant memory, another season of hope and happiness is just around the corner: the Winter Olympics! For two and a half weeks, all eyes will be on Vancouver as athletes from around the world hope to make their families and nations proud.

5. Tara Lipinski Steals Figure Skating Gold, Nagano 1998

In 1998, America was in love with Michelle Kwan. The graceful seventeen-year-old was already a two-time US Figure Skating Champion and winner of the 1996 World Championships when she took the stage in Nagano. While Tara Lipinski, then just fifteen, had a National and World title of her own, it was Kwan whose experience and artistry made her the favorite for the Olympic title. However, after a solid performance by Kwan, Lipinski emerged with this exhuberant, youthful, and technically more difficult program to clinch the gold medal, becoming the youngest Winter Olympic champion ever. J.R. speed-skated his way to my heart. OMG, did I just write that?

Let’s talk J.R. Celski.

He’s single, he’s 19-years old, and he’s an amazing short track speed skating sensation competing for Team USA in the Vancouver Olympics. And he’s officially your reason to tune in!

J.R. has been skating since he was a mere three years old when his parents gave him Playschool roller skates for his birthday (I can’t even remember what I got for my third birthday – cake, maybe?). Since then, he’s been dedicating his life to skating, but it wasn’t until he found out about speed skating on ice in 2002 that he realized this was a passion not to be joked around with. So he swapped his wheeled skates for some 17 ½ inch blades, moved from the roller rink to the ice rink, and thus began his journey to the Olympics. And boy, has it been quite an adventure.

J.R.’s hard work and focus has allowed him to win several medals, including a recent silver at the World Championships. Then, in September 2009, he finally got the opportunity he had been waiting for his whole life: a chance to compete in the Olympic trials. He was doing a phenomenal job and then, just like that, he slipped and slammed into the unforgiving wall surrounding the rink.
