Whether you picked yours up for $5 on the streets of Manhattan or at a fancy boutique, I’d be willing to bet that you have a pashmina somewhere in your closet. These large, fringed pieces of cloth are silky soft and surprisingly warm, making them clear winter staples, but how to style them isn’t so obvious.

With only a few weeks of winter left, we’ve all come down with a bit of spring fever! Infuse some color into your cold-weather wardrobe by taking this week’s challenge: work a pashmina into an outfit.

Tips and Tricks for Rocking a Pashmina

Wear it as a scarf. This is probably pretty obvious, but it bears repeating. Pashminas make ideal scarves – they’re full, not the slightest bit itchy, and long enough to wrap around your neck a few times.

Bring it with you while you travel. Pashminas are lightweight and fold easily, so they’re great to bring along with you on long road trips on on flights.

Wear it as a headscarf. Pashminas can easily be knotted, pinned, or draped, making them perfect for going incognito – just add a pair of sunglasses for a very Jackie O. look.

Try it as a shawl. A wide, lightweight scarf like a pashmina looks great draped across one’s shoulders on a chilly night. Knot it in the front or pin it with a brooch to hold it in place.

Wear it around your hips. Depending on its weight and length, a pashmina can work as a colorful belt or just for a little extra warmth on your backside if it’s super cold out.

Make it into a funky top. Pashminas have enough fabric to offer you coverage – so why not take yours and get creative? Try to pin, tie, or wrap it to make a unique top. This IS a fashion challenge after all!

If you live anywhere north of Florida, chances are you’ve had to deal with snow this year. I wouldn’t even bat an eyelash if tomorrow the weather folks announced that even our Florida friends were going to get hit with a version of SnOMG . And total side note, apparently we are all VERY excited about the Blizzards of 2011. People on Facebook are eager to come up with their very clever play on words – Snowtorious BIG, Snobama, The Snowtuation?!. It’s like we’ve never even seen this white powdery stuff we call snow before.

But I get it. The weather has been bat sh*t crazy. And totally unpredictable. Sort of like your emotions right around your period. And even though Thundersnow is a fun word to say (especially when said like this: THUNDERSNOOOOOW!!!!) the very cold truth is that actually walking around in Thundersnow is the opposite of fun.

So I figured, what better way to help you prepare to brave the elements than with a way to stay warm yet look cool. Now you can throw a snowball, sip a hot cocoa or trudge through 12 feet of snow and look fabu all at the same time!

The Black Blizzard.

Love this look. Warm, cute and totally functional! The jacket can either have a totally awesome collar OR turn into a hood for double protection. The hat is adorbs but oh so warm. Paired with these legwarmers over some leggings (and a pair of tights if you you need added warmth) and gloves that keep your hands warm but still fully text-able! You = Blizzard Babe.

The key to looking cute in the winter is finding a coat that cuts in at the waist. Winter is in full swing. Whether you’re dealing with icy wind, slushy streets, or ceaseless snowfall, every college girl knows that winter weather means adjusting our wardrobes.

Bundling up in style, however, can present a variety of challenges – from finding cute and cozy layers, to worst of all, looking lumpy and frumpy. If you’re in need of some guidance on how to layer without looking lumpy or just some extra winter inspiration, consider this your handbook!

1. Wear your socks!
I’ll be the first to admit that I hate wearing socks. Hate it! Icy feet, unfortunately, instantly make the rest of you colder, making socks an absolute winter necessity.

Outside of warm boots, warm, insulating socks are the easiest way to lock in extra heat. For extra cold weather, look for tall socks – the more leg coverage, the better. Thigh-high styles were popular this fall and look adorable scrunched under boots, as do knee-high pairs. Finally, if you’re using your socks as an accessory, look for fun details or patterns for warmth AND style.

2. Pile on thin fabrics!
Cold-weather girls have long been known to layer tights and leggings under the skinniest of pants. (This can be an amazing strategy for surviving below-freezing wind chills!) Opt for dark footless tights or get even warmer with workout tights. Leggings or footless tights are the college girl version of long underwear!

Even though this extra layer is thin, it provides some extra cozy insulation. The same goes for your top: go for spandex tanks to wear under the rest of your wardrobe, the tighter the better. In order to create a streamlined, chic look, these base layers should fit like a second skin.

As plaid shirts have been super popular the last few years, pretty much every college girl has one in her wardrobe. (This college girl has 5. NBD.) If not, it’s easy to find someone to beg, borrow or steal (and return washed) one from. If you have a plaid shirt that is flannel, it’s a great way to add pattern to your daily wardrobe, while still having a cozy piece of clothing to face the cold in.

Since this item has been around for several seasons, it can be hard to find new, exciting ways to bring life to this wardrobe staple. That’s why I’m here. I’ve got three outfits to get you started.

Outfit 1:

Who says plaid shirts can’t be sexy? Want to wear yours out for a night on the town? Put it with a sequin (or other statement) skirt, for an unexpected look. A boyfriend blazer anchors the outfit, while keeping to warm. A pair of great heels, and a bracelet finish off this look. If you want warmth on your legs, a pair of tights – either nude or black – will work with this look. For a long leg line you can also wear boots with your black tights.

Outfit 2:

Have a simple tank dress you’ve been dying to wear despite the cold weather? Well, by putting an open flannel shirt over it and the putting a cardigan over that, you’re adding two layers on your arms for extra warmth. Belt it to accentuate your waistline, taking away some of the bulk from the outfit. Then finish off the look with tights and your boots. Adorably toasty.

Outfit 3:

Having a lazy day, but still need to leave the house at some point? Try putting your plaid shirt underneath a slouchy sweater (this will also work with one of your longer cardigans or any item borrowed from a boy). You’ll have the soft feeling on flannel next to your skin, paired with the warmth of a cozy sweater. This look can be worn with leggings, assuming your sweater covers your butt, or skinny jeans. Your favorite boots and a thick pair of socks will have you cute enough to trek out for brunch and comfy enough for even your laziest, most hungover mornings.

On any given day here at OU, I’d bet at least 60% of students are rocking The North Face, Columbia or Patagonia (“Fratagonia”, as some might say) outerwear. Perhaps it’s a southern or midwestern cliche, but literally EVERYONE I know owns a zippered or pull-over fleece jacket. And I’m betting many of you probably own one, too. (Admit it!)

As popular as they are, jackets like these are often negatively associated with “the uniform”, as I like to call it. You know, the Uggs/leggings/oversized V-neck/fleece jacket combo that is popular at countless colleges across the nation. While I’m not saying it’s “wrong” to dress this way, why not challenge yourself to think outside the box and rock a more unique outfit?

There’s a way to rock these babies and still stand out in a crowd. Just because you’re in a situation that requires a warm, tough, and no-frills jacket, it doesn’t mean that you have to give up looking stylish. I hope you find this styling challenge as practical and fun as I did.

Tips and Trick for Making a Fleece Jacket More Stylish

Add a funky scarf. This is the easiest way to dress up a fleece coat. A colorful scarf will catch the eye of people around you. Others will pay attention to the texture, or the unique way it’s tied around your neck.

Wear one with a hat. A slouchy beanie adds a laid-back vibe to any outfit, including one with a plain fleece jacket. Plus, you’ll stay super warm!

If you have to buy a fleece, look for unique styles. I love the plush and fur-lined versions I’ve seen.

Pair one with chic shoes. Fleece jackets go great with riding or motorcycle boots, or those cute lace up ankle boot wedges that are getting popular. They also look fine with oxfords, ballet flats, loafers, and anything casual.

Layer, layer, layer. Wear a striped, floral, or graphic shirt underneath your fleece for interest, or wear your jacket under an ever heavier coat if you’re outside in the bitter cold. Play with vests, zip it up, or leave it unzipped.

Show of your style with pants! To balance out the drab top, pair a fleece jacket with flared or wide leg jeans, a great pair of trousers, or your trusty skinny cargos.

Wear it with moxie. Here at CF, we love the idea of wearing unique, creative outfits every day. But everyone needs a break! A fleece jacket, jeans, and a pair of sneakers can still make a statement if you wear the look with a bit of confidence.

With the popularity of nautical inspired pieces the last few seasons, there’s a good chance you already own something in this dark shade of blue. Navy can substitute for black as a neutral in many cases, making it a good addition if you’re trying to banish some of the black from your wardrobe. For example, if you’re tired of your usual little black dress routine, why not switch it up with a little navy dress?

If you made a New Year’s Resolution to wear sweatpants less, it’s time to start finding alternatives that are just as easy to wear and comfortable. Not possible, you say? Well listen up, woman! That cozy, warm, comfy feeling you get with sweats can be mimicked with a warm sweater, such as a shawl-collared pullover. It’s versatile, soft, warm, but still looks cute. And if you know how to make it work in advance, putting together a cute look with a sweater and various other wardrobe staples can be even easier than throwing on a pair of oversized sweats. Yes, it’s true.

Outfit 1:

Deets: Sweater, Jeans, Boots, Hat, Jacket.

A simple alternative to wearing sloppy sweats is skinny jeans and a shawl-collar sweater. Adding your go-to boots (I’m talking leather boots, NOT sloppy winter boots) keeps the look warm and toasty for winter, while still looking sleek. (And if it’s extra cold you can always add super-thick socks underneath!) If you’re trekking in the snow, a jacket and a hat are the finishing touches to brave the cold in a “I can keep this stuff on and still look cute” sorta way… and maybe live up to New Year’s Resolution 2: Go to class.

Outfit 2:

Deets: Sweater, Skirt, Tights, Boots, Ring.

True story: putting on sweats is just. so. easy. Truer story: so is slipping on a casual skirt with some tights. And we all know that looks wayyyy cuter. A shawl-collared sweater (or any pullover sweater, for that matter) goes nicely with this cord mini-skirt – though if you only own a denim skirt or pencil skirt, those will work as well. Depending on how much room remains in your skirt after your holiday overindulgence, you might be able to tuck your sweater in. Add tights and boots (keeping them in the same family makes your legs look ultra long, as opposed to the unflattering shape of a sweatpant) and a simple ring to accessorize this outfit, then out you go lookin’ all warm and fabulous.

Outfit 3:

Deets: Sweater, Skirt, Tights, Scarf, Booties.

If you are looking for a way to extend the wear of a summer floral skirt – or if you’ve already started scoping out next spring’s items – you can winterize the skirt with tights and a sweater. A pair of boots ground the look, while a colourful scarf adds another burst of colour to the look. If your toes get cold easily, you can also add a thick pair of socks into this style of boot – it looks cute even if they poke out the top just enough.

Layering is a fine art. It needs to do two things – keep you warm and make you look good. Around August I start flicking through magazines, excited and inspired by the layered looks on the fashion pages. Although in reality, size 2 models look great with some extra bulk. I do not.

The best way to layer- both for warmth and for style – is by using thin layers. I’ve chosen to use the same thin jersey dress for each of these outfits, which can be layered both over and under for extra warmth. Even colder where you are? Add thick socks, boots and a warm winter coat.

Outfit One.

Winter doesn’t have to mean dull, grey colors. I chose to layer a thick, yellow cardigan over this navy blue dress. Belting a cardigan over the top is a great way to highlight your shape while keeping warm and stylish- it’s a style blogger favorite. I chose oxfords and knee socks, but this would look just as good with tights or leggings. And before you get all hot and bothered…YES! You can wear black and navy together.

Outfit Two.

Shopping Deets: Dress – Forever 21, $17.80; Blazer – Target, $24.99; White Tee – Debenham’s, $9; Booties - Forever 21, $24.80; Tights – Metropark, $13.30; Scarf - Bows and Bandits, $14.

Thin, soft blazers are a great way to layer up and keep stylish. Choose a light one that you can easy fit under a winter coat. I’ve also added a long sleeved top here than can be layered underneath the dress and a cute little scarf for extra warmth. This is a bit more of a classy look – it would be great for work but is also a really fun, trendy way to dress up for class.

Outfit Three.

Shopping Deets: Dress – Forever 21, $17.80; Skirt - Miss Selfridge, $22; Sweater – Urban Outfitters, $19.99; Flats – Charlotte Russe, $19.50.

A dress doesn’t always have to be just a dress. Get more mileage out of your wardrobe by wearing your dresses as either tops or skirts. Add a sweater over the top, or like here, wear a high-waisted skirt for a completely different look. This striped cardigan brightens up a simple outfit and you can opt for flats and tights or a hot pair of riding boots to round this look out.

It’s almost the end of the year. As you’re making your New Year’s resolution list, here’s something to think about: punching up your style for 2011.

If you have “budget better” on your list, this might seem like it will counter a resolution to save money, but it doesn’t have to. An easy way to add a little punch to your wardrobe is with accessories! With a pair of patterned tights you can easily change the appearance of your go-to black dress. With a sparkly headband you can add some interest to your in-dire-need-of-a-cut hairstyle. Though Blair Waldorf-esque bow headbands may seem so Constance Billards, adding one with a lot of bling is a way to stray from that UES image.

By adding accessories from head to toe, you can add a lot of pizzaz to an otherwise basic outfit. And I’ve got 15 items to scoop up just in time for the New Year.
