Attempting to lose weight can be seriously stressful when you feel like you have to follow a laundry list of rules—don’t eat after 7 pm, banish white flour, etc., etc.—in addition to hitting the dreaded treadmill and the stinky weight-room. According to Women’s Health magazine, however, it’s possible to shed pounds successfully without listening to every piece of diet advice that gets thrown around (or, you know, printed in Women’s Health).
What are the diet rules you can break?
Eat many small meals a day instead of three big meals:
Many people insist that eating small portions throughout the day instead of stuffing your face with three big meals will lead to weight-loss by revving your metabolism and keeping it going from morning until night. But Women’s Health points out that if you’re eating multiple times a day, you’re running the risk of consuming more calories than you might if you stuck to breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack. Instead, make sure that mealtimes are defined by fiber-rich foods and lean proteins (those will fill you up without packing in the calorie), and leave the daylong grazing to the farm animals.
Brown rice and whole wheat breads and pastas are better than their evil white flour twins:
At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if your pasta is white as long as you’re consuming the recommended six ounces of carbohydrates each day. Women’s Health says that a study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association reports that people on high-carb diets were slimmer than their carb-banning counterparts even when they consumed “bad carbs.” While you should make sure that half of your daily carbohydrate intake comes from whole grains, white bread isn’t going to lead to weight gain any more than whole-wheat bread if you keep your portion sizes small.
Don’t eat after dark:
Women’s Health quotes doctor Ann G. Kulze, who explains that the body handles calories in the same exact way no matter what time they’re consumed. Figure out how many calories you should be consuming each day – this number depends on your age, height and activity level – and stick to it. To make sure that you have enough energy to fuel your daily activities, you should spread out caloric intake throughout the day. But if you eat two cookies at 9 p.m., you’re not going to gain any more weight than you would if you ate them at 6.
Ban desserts:
Putting foods on the do-not-touch list only makes you want them more and can lead to binges. Eating dessert is okay as long as you tweak your diet accordingly, which means eating less for dinner and picking desserts like chocolate-dipped fruit and sorbets instead of ice-cream sundaes. Women’s Health points out that restaurant dessert portions are often ridiculously large and high in calories—an Applebee’s chocolate chip cookie sundae, for example, contains 1,620 calories, more than many people should be consuming all day long! The magazine also suggests re-thinking the traditional idea of dessert when you want to indulge. Your after dinner treat doesn’t need to be chocolate; a craving for something sweet can be met in the form of a yogurt and cereal parfait.

My roommate recently told me a story. It was a bit graphic in nature, so I won’t share the dirty details here, but it involved her, her boyfriend, and an orgasm so intense she actually experienced female ejaculation. Yeah, maybe we share a little too much information.
I was intrigued. (And slightly interested in borrowing that BF for myself…)
Female ejaculation is an elusive experience held by many men to be the epitome of female orgasm. Why? Because it’s viewed as proof of an orgasm, a job well done. Women don’t have to worry about whether our partner enjoyed himself or not – there’s something sticky to prove it. But men aren’t as lucky; most of us can convincingly fake an orgasm if need be, and men realize this.
Squirting, or female ejaculation, however, can’t be faked. It is also something new and exciting and who doesn’t want to experience a new level of physical pleasure? Read More »

Staying on any kind of workout schedule (or just schedule, for that matter) is close to impossible in college. With each day comes different classes, meetings, part time jobs, social engagements and perhaps most importantly, happy hours. Trying to adhere to the same gym or running time is an unlikely feat for most of us, not to mention the fact that when I’m presented with the choice between a sweat session or a sipping session, more often than not, the cocktails win. Wah wah.
But, a great way to stay motivated and keep your activity levels up is to train for a race! I know this sounds a bit intimidating at first, but let me tell you from personal experience (I ran my first half-marathon last year), it’s totally doable and well-worth it. Knowing that I was going to be sweating out 13.1 miles at a specific date gave me the extra boost to get out of bed in the morning or squeeze in a run whenever I could. I was able to drop a few lbs, improve my overall fitness, raise money for a charity and still go out with my friends at night all at the same time!

Talking sex with your doctor isn’t always easy. Whether you are afraid she or he will judge you, you just don’t feel comfortable sharing the intimate details of your life between the sheets, or you can’t think straight with a speculum between your legs, many people get tight lipped in the doctor’s office. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have questions.
After so many of you wrote in to ask Dr. Lissa Rankin questions during CollegeCandy’s STD Awareness Day, we thought we’d bring her back more regularly. So, every Thursday she will be answering your questions. The ones you couldn’t ask your doctor in person and didn’t really trust the Yahoo community to answer for you. Just leave your questions in the comments, or send em over to us. (We’ll keep it all anonymous for you.) Dr. Lissa will answer anything – really, anything – about sex and other lady things. Don’t be shy; she’s waiting for ya!
Q: I feel very uncomfortable with all things sex. I am not very experienced and get really nervous when the opportunity arises. How can I fix that?
A: To answer your question completely, I would want to know more about you. Why are you uncomfortable with all things sex? Is it because you’re young and inexperienced, or have you had past experiences, such as rape or sexual molestation, that rock your foundations and understandably lead to uncomfortable feelings regarding sex? And how is your relationship with your sexual partner? Many people are uncomfortable with sexual activity when they don’t know or trust their partner well. Are you uncomfortable because you don’t really understand your body? Or are you having pain? There are many reasons why someone might feel uncomfortable with sex. Sometimes, those feelings arise to protect you and are worth honoring. But sometimes, they get in the way of sexual bliss and can cause problems. Read More »

This morning I ripped my tights, missed my train, got sneezed on, and forgot my wallet, which inevitably forced me to put my bagel back and face the day hungry, grumpy and in constant fear of the next gift from this bad day.
Oh and did I mention that this was all before 9 am?
Great start the the weekend right? I guess this technically makes me a pessimistic, glass half empty, gray lining kind of gal. Unfortunately, I just learned this also means I will not live as long as my happy, shiny counterpart – the optimist.
Figures.
Don’t believe me? Check out the report in Time where 100,000 women over the age of 50 were asked to respond to a questionnaire that measured optimism. Participants were asked if they agreed with statements like, “In uncertain times, I expect the worst” (put a check next to the “agreed” column please). Eight years later, researchers studied the women’s death rates and found that those who were found to be optimistic were 14 times more likely to be alive than pessimists.
Ok, so maybe my outlook on life is killing me, but it’s hard not to expect the worst in these troubled economic times. Who knows where we’ll be or what we can expect tomorrow? And don’t even get me started on the world ending in 2012. Read More »

Dear Ladies,
Men here, as a collective. We thought we’d get together and write you guys some letters about a few things that we’ve been thinking about. Today’s letter is about us men being confused! Yes, smirk, and press your tongue against your canine (its hot).
We’re confused about what you lovely ladies are wearing in the gym. More specifically, why you’re looking so damn hot in up in that! To us, the gym is about a few things. It’s about working out, making loud grunting noises (FYI, makes you stronger), and sleeveless narcissism.
Or at least, that’s what we go there for. We aren’t specifically there to look at, or pick up, women. There’s an assumption that most of us aren’t going to look our best in there anyways, so we aren’t super concerned with finding ladies to woo. But hey, thats us, we’re dudes and we think a certain way. Beyond ‘the gym isn’t for dating’ we also have a few collective rules that we feel like you may or may not have given us.
- Gawking is creepy
- Sweaty dudes are creepy
- Gawking, sweaty dudes are super-duper creepy.
So you could see our confusion when you ladies show up to do some leg lifts or swiss ball crunches in what basically adds up to a bikini with more support. We want to be clear, we like you in bikinis. Hell, we love you in those things. But when you wear those in the gym, and you’re being all active, you’re really creating a dangerous situation for us. Again, we’ve got focused, mostly one-track minds. Here’s a short list of things we cannot do at the same time. Read More »

We all know that drinking too much alcohol is bad for you, blah blah blah. It can kill your liver and cause you to do stupid things like drive drunk.
But, there are some little known facts about the positive aspects of booze on your body. Hallelujah!
Women’s Health magazine explains how the beverage of choice for many college students interacts with your body and in some ways, can actually be good for your heart, brain, and even your weight!
Now, before you continue reading, remember that I am not saying that only positive things will happen if you pound 10 beers over the course of power hour or drink vodka tonics like they are water. In fact, very bad things will probably happen…I’m sure we’ve all had one of those nights. Moderation is key.
Nevertheless, it’s still nice to know that good old booze has some redeeming factors for your health. The article takes you on a chronological journey starting with that yummy cocktail hitting your lips. Mix up a great drink, sit back, and enjoy the ride… Read More »
