Your “There’s Nothing On TV” Survival Guide

It’s finals time, meaning us college girls are holed up in libraries across the country, listening to Christmas music on our iPod’s as we daydream of shopping and sharing gossip over coffee instead of cramming our head full of crap we were done caring about at Thanksgiving.

But let’s be honest, there’s only so much studying you can do until you can’t possibly memorize any more formulas or essay questions. That’s when you throw in the towel, pop some popcorn and let yourself relax with one of your favorite TV shows.

Except, wait. NONE. OF. THEM. ARE. ON.

Why the television world decided it would be a good idea to put all shows on hiatus during the one week that we all desperately need our favorite shows is beyond me.

Glee. Gray’s Anatomy. The Hills. Gossip Girl. The Office. 30 Rock.

All of them. Gone. When we need them most. (Thank God we’ve got Jersey Shore!) Obviously we are going to need some things to get us through this week of hell. So here are some suggestions of ways to fill the time slots that your primetime obsessions have vacated.

Play catch up
During the semester there are so many great shows, so little time. I always feel left out of some conversation about the latest episode of something. So use this week to hop on over to Hulu and catch up on some series that you’ve fell out of touch with. Catching up on Modern Family (the best show on TV, for sure) and watching some of the past seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be sure to keep your spirits up as exams and essays bog you down.

Prepare for Free Shipping Day(!!)
Did you guys know that Thursday, December 17th is Free Shipping Day? Well now you do. So get your butt online and start shopping! All of the websites participating (so far there are 601 and counting) guarantee free shipping by Christmas, meaning you can stop stressing about not having enough time to get all your gifts and have them delivered just in time. For. Free.

Chocolate Covered Anything Day
Wednesday, December 16 might be the best day of the year, and I’m not just saying that because I am extremely premenstrual (okay, maybe I am, but we all will be at some point in the near future). And what is better than having an excuse to indulge the study munchies with some chocolaty covered goodness? Chocolate covered almonds are ahhhmazing… and healthy! Or try some choco-espresso beans for a little boost to keep you energized for those study sessions.  Take a study break and get some girls from the dorm together to make your own chocolate covered popcorn or share a little chocolate fondue. All you have to do is melt some chocolate in your mini microwave and dip away (strawberries, bananas, angel food cake, pretzels, apples…you name it, we’ll dip it!)

The Sing Off
While nothing can fill the giant void left by Gossip Girl and Glee, there is one glimmer of hope in the TV lineup this week and that is NBC’s new show: The Sing Off. It’s like American Idol meets America’s Best Dance Crew meets Glee. Only without Ryan Seacrest, Mario Lopez and Finn. Sigh, Finn. But it does randomly have Nicole of the Pussycat Dolls… Anyways, it starts tonight and if there’s one thing that will get you out of that study funk, it’s a bunch of show choirs competing. I mean, honestly, how could this not make you happy!?

Study
Okay, fine. I guess having those 2-3 extra hours each night might be good for our GPA. So, maybe we’ll spend a little extra time at the library. And maybe we’ll hit up that evening review session. But we’re going to complain about it the entire time. And we’re not doing it without a little N’Sync Christmas music and a whole lot of greasy Chinese food.
