Baggin' Out: Wayuu Taya Bags

Every girl needs a good purse (or 12). Whether you’re going for groceries or running from class to class, they are simply essential for holding all your, uh, essentials. Each week, I’m going to show you a fashionable, yet functional purse for the college crowd and let you know why you absolutely need it! I apologize ahead of time to your bank account.
Northern Ontario has been experiencing delightfully hot weather this past week. I was finally able to sit outside, enjoy a book and bask in the sunshine. It resulted in a big sunburn on my chest (not so hot), but other than that, it was great! And the best part? Because the weather has been consistently hot, I’ve packed away my winter clothing and purses and busted out my summer gear. That means I’ll be sporting a wardrobe of neon, breezy chiffon, and most importantly, fun summery purses!
I just received my first summer paycheck and have been browsing the web, looking for the perfect summer addition to my handbag collection. I have plenty of neutral, fringed and leather bags and wanted something punchy, yet low maintenance. Cue the Wayuu Taya collection of bags!
It should be noted: there is a charitable twist to this week’s purse. These purses are sold by the Wayuu Taya Foundation, who describes their objectives best: “Wayúu’s, commonly referred to as Guajiros, are an Amerindian ethic group that have been able to avoid European acculturation over the centuries. The Guajira region is characterized by being very dry and arid, as well as extremely poor in most rural areas. The bags are hand-made by Wayuú indigenous women at Shukumajaya, the foundation’s women center that helps educate women on parenting and nutrition, family planning and hygiene. And all bag are one-of-kind.”
Cool, huh? So you get a unique, one-of-a-kind bag that is right on trend with the ethnic craze and bold colors this season, and the Wayuu people benefit too! Besides serving the common good, these bucket bags will serve your everyday needs throughout the summer.
Each bag takes a woman 21 days to complete, working 8 hours each day, so you know they are top-notch quality. Your bag is HAND-freakin-MADE! The top closes with a drawstring and even though that’s not the most secure method, this one is fairly pick-pocket proof. It measures 10 L x 13 H x 9 D, making it larger than average for a crossbody bucket bag and perfect for a day at the fair or a music festival! They come in an array of bright, fun colors and are sure to help you stand out in a crowd.
And like I said, it’s right on trend. Check out music icon and fashion risk-taker, Katy Perry, sporting her Wayuu Taya bag.

If you’re interested in supporting the Wayuu Taya Foundation and looking like a supastar at the same time, pick up one of their woven bags! Available direct from Wayuu Taya or through Revolve and other funky retailers for about $130-$160.
