Exciting news, CC’ers: I’m almost a real person as I now have a home! It’s small and cozy, and there’s no furniture yet, but it’s home. And it is the cutest, happiest apartment ever. AND I have an announcement for you as well. Guess who my roommate is? You won’t! I share this lovely place with the one and only, Alex Gehringer! Let me share with you the romantic story of how Alex and I met.
Last summer I was in New York for my cousin’s wedding, which happened to fall around the same time as the first CollegeCandy summer party extravaganza. I was so happy to go and meet the other writers and editors and of course, readers. When Alex and I met we were instant friends because we’re both totally awesome, and she told me “You’re my favorite!” so it was basically love at first sight. Since then, CollegeCandy has obviously gone through a lot of changes, and I’ve been more involved so Alex and I GChat all the time.
Well when I found out I was potentially moving to New York she told me she was looking for a roommate, and we decided we would be a good match. So we started looking around for places, made Google Docs of what we liked and didn’t like, and then I was here and we really started hunting. We saw lots of places, some with crooked floors, some with no living rooms. We were kind of down on our luck, but then one of my friends found a place for us. We loved it, and it unfortunately ended up being applied for by the time we had all of our stuff together. Our broker though, being the cool guy that he is, was friends with the leasing agent for the building and told him there was another unit coming up that wasn’t listed yet so he sent us some pictures and we were in love.
I didn’t even see this place though until I moved in because I work late so it was difficult to go look during the work week. But Alex is an angel and went to see it and our broker sent me a video. As Alex says, it makes our hearts sparkle. So after three weeks of figuring out a mess of paperwork, we were ready to move in. Except that I was going out of town for a wedding, so Alex moved in and my mom shipped a bunch of stuff for me to have when I got there. I got in at midnight last Sunday and could actually say I was going home.
We’re convinced that we’re not quite real people yet. We’re slowly but surely getting things together. We made a couch out of cardboard boxes until our real one comes in. I have four boxes of clothes, but no hangers. But we have keys and a roof and beds. We’re the real 2 Broke Girls, and we’re loving every minute of it.
