Students Taught How To Enslave/Sell Africans [The Apocalypse]

Everyday until December 21, 2012 we will count down to the end with a sign of the apocalypse. It’s like that movie The Number 23 (except actually good), once you see the signs – they’re everywhere! [These are just jokes, folks!]

I am going to preface this news post with this:

You know what I love? Whenever anyone points out that a group of people are being culturally insensitive a bunch of other people start saying, “You’re being too politically correct. You’re being too sensitive!” Welp, some things are sensitive subjects because you know . . . rape, genocide, slavery, gay bashing, racism, oppression . . . So, you have to be sensitive because they are sensitive subjects. Think of it this way, with the exception of Europe the entire rest of the world is of color, 1 in 4 women are raped, 1 in 5 people identify as queer, segregation was made illegal in only 1968, genocide still occurs today, so it’s not really being sensitive to small “whiny” groups of people so much as being considerate to the other 90% of the  people you share the world with.

It’s not OK to dress up like other races because it dehumanizes them. A person is not a costume when that’s how they look. Your face or someone else’s should not be equated to a monster mask. Just because you don’t mean to be cruel, racist or insensitive doesn’t mean you are not – most people don’t mean to be disrespectful. I used to say, “That’s gay,” whenever something was mad whack because I thought I was so inclusive that I could get away with it. Well, I can’t, it’s hurtful to equate queerness with something bad. We have to stop pretending like intolerance is something of the past so that we can justify being intolerant in the present. Not everything can be that ~M~e-T@~. This ain’t an episode of Supernatural, girl.

With that said, this post is a clear sign of the apocalypse because there is no way anyone can be this insensitive. An all-girl’s school in London, England had students come up with a business plan on how to buy, sell and enslave African people. Here’s the lesson:

“Students aged 13 and 14 were given imaginary tools including manacles, whips, thumb screws, iron brands, muskets and barracoons, and asked to devise a Dragon’s Den-style (a reality TV show known as Shark Tank in the US) business proposal for the capture and enslavement of African people. Lesson materials included direction on how to carry out a “slave raid” and manipulate “African Chiefs” through bribes and lacing them with alcohol. Perhaps the most debased suggestions were that the “best” aspect of being a slave trader was having “an affair with a beautiful African girl,” and that the adult male “mixed race” offspring could be sent to Africa to “run the slave business” while his white father sailed to America.”

While these maybe the tactics used by slave traders at the time, how is this really educating 13-year-old girls on the real causes, consequences and systematic/government-sanctioned rape, murder and enslavement of African people? Teaching slavery as a business plan completely undermines all of the complexities and the utter atrociousness of slavery. Imagine teaching a class where you pretend you are Hilter and have to devise a plan to exterminate the Jews and brainwash the rest?

It must be the end of the world because between all these fashion designers appropriating sacred Native American garments and blackface and all these college students dressing up as Mexicans, African Americans, and Natives – I just don’t understand how it became cool to pretend history never happened.
