Happy Hannukah to those who observe the holiday! Does it look like winter where you are? Because it sure does NOT in New York City. I never thought I’d be wishing for colder weather, but it’s totally happening. It’s December. There is supposed to be snow on the ground! Where is my winter wonderland?! Anyway, here are the week’s top stories.

At Home

In a horrible and terrifying tragedy, a man was pushed onto the subway tracks in Midtown Manhattan and killed when the train came into the station. The driver saw the man on the tracks, but it was too late to stop the train in time. A freelance photographer who was in the station took a picture of the incident and the New York Post put the image of the man about to be crushed on its front cover. There’s a huge debate going on about whether or not the Post should have published the picture.

The Supreme Court decided to take on two cases involving same sex marriage – one a challenge to California’s Proposition 8 and the other a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act. Activists are optimistic, but some are worried about the consequences of an unfavorable ruling.

Trans teen Sage Smith, 19, has been missing from her home in Virginia for nearly 20 days. The case has gotten almost no media attention, and Smith’s family says the local police haven’t done all they should to find her.

The World

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has granted soldiers the right to arrest civilians in an order that will take effect on Monday. Morsi himself spent time in jail after a similar order was made by Egypt’s former leader Hosni Mubarak.

Ghana’s President John Mahama has won re-election, a result the opposing party says was manipulated.

U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan are said to have killed two Al-Qaeda commanders.


Manny Pacquiao, widely considered to be one of the best boxers in the sport, was defeated by Juan Manuel Marquez. It was the fourth time the two men have fought, and Pacquiao won the last two meetings. The internet abounds with gifs of Pacquiao getting knocked out. Here you go.

In this year’s Army-Navy football showdown, Navy came out on top in the classic game.

John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John recently reunited to make a holiday song together. If you think this sounds like a return the magic of their Grease days, you would be wrong.
