So…Uhhh…Is There White Smoke?

Many people across the world are anxiously awaiting the announcement of the new Pope. Most people are just waiting to just hear it announced on the news, but if you really want to get the full experience, you can visit the website called “Is There White Smoke?” It’s a website that has a picture of a smokestack continuously spewing smoke, but don’t be fooled by the description. Watching it will mesmerize you and it may become addictive…be careful.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Pope electing process, 115 Cardinals get together in secret meetings and vote to choose the next Pope (oh and there’s an age limit- you have to be less than 80 to participate!). In order to be elected the next Pope, a man needs 77 votes. During this whole process, a smoke stack is continuously burning. If the Cardinals haven’t reached a decision, the smoke is colored black. When they have elected a new Pope, the smoke is white. The smoke is the only way the Church/Cardinals can communicate with the outside world during this very secretive process. It kind of reminds me of juries…

So, there you have it folks. The 411 of choosing the new Pope! Since the smoke just turned white, go check out the Pope candidates so you can familiarize yourself with the new religious leader!
